The Redskins have re-signed backup quarterback Rex Grossman, as first reported by Pro Football Talk.

The Washington Post reports it’s a one-year deal.

Grossman was activated in just two games, but did not play in 2012 while serving as third-string quarterback behind Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins. His role could expand in early 2013 while Griffin recovers from knee surgery.

“I’m very excited to be part of the team moving forward, to contribute is what I wanted,” Grossman confirmed to ESPN 980 radio.

The Redskins reportedly could offer former West Virginia quarterback Pat White a chance to use and market his read-option skills during the off-season and training camp.

Grossman, who was selected by the Bears in the first round of the 2003 NFL Draft, started 13 games for the Redskins in 2011.

Washington Redskins’ quarterback Robert Griffin III followed Wednesday’s practice with another on Thursday, according to several sources.

Griffin’s status for Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings remains uncertain after he was knocked out and suffered a concussion last Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons. Griffin will undergo more medical tests to gauge his ability to return following his second concussion in less than a year.

If Griffin is not cleared to play, Redskins fans are already debating who should play quarterback against the Vikings: rookie Kirk Cousins or veteran Rex Grossman. Cousins completed five of nine passes with a touchdown and two interceptions against the Falcons.

Head coach Mike Shanahan isn’t tipping his hand on the team’s backup plans.

    From NBC Washington:

“You have to look at both ends of it,” Shanahan said regarding preparations at the quarterback situation.

Shanahan didn’t indicate how the remaining reps were split between Cousins and Grossman. And while most of us are familiar with Grossman’s game — rare moments of brilliance sandwiched around long stretches of mediocrity — all we’ve seen from Cousins came in the quarter-and-a-half of work he got in Griffin’s absence last Sunday.

  • Report: Rex Grossman Will Sign One-Year Contract To Stay With Redskins

Rex Grossman will not be the Washington Redskins’ starting quarterback anymore, but he’s sticking around anyway. Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk has learned that Grossman has agreed to a new one-year contract with the Skins.

The Redskins made a blockbuster trade last week to move up in next month’s NFL draft and acquire the No. 2 overall pick, presumably to select Robert Griffin III. That means that Grossman, who started 13 games for Washington last season, will ease into a backup role and perhaps serve as a veteran mentor for the young Griffin.

Grossman began his career with the Chicago Bears, for whom he played six seasons. He led the Bears to a 13-3 campaign and an NFC title in 2006. He arrived in Washington in 2010, first working as Donovan McNabb’s backup before replacing McNabb late in the second.

Grossman turns 32 in August. For his career, he’s completed 863 passes for 10,232 yards, 56 touchdowns and 60 interceptions.

Washington Redskins quarterback Rex Grossman said his team was motivated to beat the Giants after cornerback Antrel Rolle’s disparaging comments about their squad, according to ESPN New York.

Grossman told SiriusXM NFL radio that Rolle made comments prior to the game that the Giants would beat the Redskins “99 out of 100 times.” The Redskins cruised to an easy 23-10 victory over New York on Sunday in Giants Stadium.

“Definitely, how can you take that comment any other way,” Grossman reportedly said when asked if the Redskins felt disrespected. “Ninety-nine out of 100 times they are going to beat us? And we beat them two in a row this year. I am not going to the casino with him anytime soon.”

Grossman threw for 185 yards and one touchdown on the game. Rolle made four tackles in the Giants losing effort.
