ORIGINAL: Wisconsin’s star running back Montee Ball has been released from the hospital after five men attacked him early Wednesday morning in Madison, according to a release from the school.

The police are treating the incident as an “unprovoked assault,” according to the incident report. Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema said the Heisman Trophy finalist has been released from the hospital.

“My concern right now is for Montee’s health and well-being,” Bielema said in a statement. “Montee has been released from the hospital and is under the care and supervision of our sports medicine staff. We will continue to evaluate him as we approach the start of fall camp this weekend. I do expect Montee to make a full recovery.”

Ball ran for 1,923 yards and scored a total of 39 touchdowns last season as the Badgers won the Big Ten title.

247 Sports is reporting that Wisconsin running back Montee Ball has decided to return for this senior season with the Badgers. Ball’s decision has not been made public by the running back himself.

Yesterday it was reported that Ball, 21, had made a decision on his NFL future but that he would discuss it with his teammates and family before making an announcement publically.

“Basically, I looked myself in the mirror and told myself what I needed to do for me, what I needed to do for my family and for my teammates,” Ball told USA Today Tuesday. “And that’s what it came down to.”

Ball ran for 164 yards and scored two touchdowns in the Badgers’ Rose Bowl loss to the Oregon Ducks Monday evening. The 21-year-old back led the nation in rushing with 1,923 yards on the ground while also tallying 39 total touchdowns this season.

Wisconsin Badgers running back Montee Ball set the all time record for most rushing touchdowns in a season, after scoring his 27th Saturday against Minnesota.

Ball broke the record with a 3-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter of Wisconsin’s 42-13 win. He finished the game with 23 carries for 166 yards and three touchdowns.

Wisconsin still has two games remaining against Illinois before they finish the season against No. 12 Penn State.
