Veteran point guard Mike Bibby is looking for work again and may get a job with the team that gave him his first opportunity to play in the NBA almost 15 years ago. The free agent is working out with the Memphis Grizzlies, the team that drafted him second overall in the 1998 NBA Draft when the franchise was in Vancouver, according to a report today from Sam Amick of USA Today Sports.

Bibby, who last appeared in 39 games last season for the New York Knicks, is working out with four or five teams, according to Amick. The Los Angeles Lakers continue to look for even more depth at the point guard position because of injuries to Steve Nash and Steve Blake, but the team is reportedly not one of those four or five interested in Bibby.

The Grizzlies could use some depth at point guard because the roster is pretty thin after Mike Conley Jr.; Memphis doesn’t have much in terms of veteran leadership from the backcourt. The move to possibly sign Bibby, 34, could spell even less minutes for the young Jerryd Bayless, who continues to struggle in his first season with the Grizzlies.

Bibby, who currently lives in the Phoenix area, has career averages of 14.4 points and 5.5 assists. Last season with the Knicks he averaged 2.6 points and 2.1 assists in 14 minutes per game. At 14-4, the Grizzlies are currently second only to the San Antonio Spurs in the Southwest Division, so Bibby could be looking at a legitimate chance to get that elusive NBA ring.

  • Report: Knicks May Start Mike Bibby Over Baron Davis In Playoffs

The New York Knicks’ starting point guard situation has been a mess this season, as the job’s been held by everyone from Toney Douglas to Iman Shumpert to — of course — Jeremy Lin. Now with Lin injured, Baron Davis has taken over. Now there’s a fifth name in the mix — Knicks reporter Marc Berman says that Mike Bibby may become the Knicks’ starter in the postseason.

“In games like this, you need a stable guy out there that can direct traffic,” interim coach Mike Woodson told Berman. “He played a lot of minutes. I thought he was solid all the way through in terms of running our offense.”

Bibby had eight assists and only one turnover in 36 minutes of work as the Knicks stomped the New Jersey Nets last night. With the nagging injuries to Davis, Woodson may bestow Bibby with more minutes going forward.

Bibby, who turns 34 next month, is averaging 2.5 points, 1.7 assists and 1.5 rebounds per game for the Knicks this season. At 33-29, New York looks likely to earn the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs and face the No. 2 Miami Heat in the first round.

Mike Bibby will make his regular season debut tonight with the New York Knicks, according to the team’s official Twitter account.

The Knicks added Mike Bibby shortly after the NBA lockout ended. The veteran point guard was signed to help add depth to the Knicks backcourt after they waived Chauncey Billups in order to make room under the salary cap for big man Tyson Chandler.

Last season Bibby averaged 8.6 points, 3.3 assists, and 2.4 rebounds per game both as a starter and a reserve for the Atlanta Hawks, Washington Wizards, and Miami Heat.

Despite nine-career NBA playoff appearances, Bibby will be searching for his first NBA title this season with the Knicks.
