Former California wide receiver Keenan Allen, projected by many as a first-round pick, will not work out at this week’s NFL Scouting Combine as he recovers from a knee injury, reports CBSSports.com’s Bruce Feldman.

SI.com’s Don Banks had the Dolphins selecting Allen 12th in his Mock Draft 1.0. NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock’s has Allen second among wide receivers in his positional rankings.

But Allen has a Grade 2 PCL strain that his agent told Feldman should not require surgery. Allen – who missed three games with a PCL tear last season – will, as a result, not work out at the Combine and not run the 40-yard dash until the beginning of April. At Cal’s pro day in March, he plans to run routes but not take part in any other drills.

If Allen can turn out a good 40 time in April and show he is healthy, his draft stock shouldn’t be affected. But lingering concerns over the health of his knee could cause his stock to fall.

University of California wide receiver Keenan Allen will forego his senior season with the Cal Bears and declare for the 2013 NFL Draft, according to a statement he made Wednesday on the team’s homepage:

“I am grateful for all of the opportunities the University of California has provided me over the past three seasons. The experience and friendships I have gained at Cal will help me throughout my life both on and off the field. I have always dreamed of having an opportunity to play in the NFL, and my time at Cal has helped me get to the point in my career where I believe I am ready to take that next step. I am thankful for my experience at Cal and am excited about what the future holds.”

Allen finishes his career as Cal’s all-time leader in receptions (205), third in receiving yards (2,570), seventh in touchdown catches (17) and, not to be forgotten, a school record for longest pass play when he and his brother, quarterback Zach Maynard, connected on a 90-yard score in Washington last year. He had been a star on the team since his freshman year when he broke the record for receiving yards by a true freshman with 46 receptions for 490 receiving yards.

Cal’s star wide receiver, Keenan Allen, won’t play in Friday’s game against the Huskies, Dan Greenspan reported on Twitter:

According to head coach Jeff Tedford, Allen has a PCL injury to his left knee. Tedford commented on the severity of the injury but wouldn’t commit to saying how long he’d be out:

Allen, a junior, set Cal’s career receptions record with his 205th catch during the team’s 49-27 loss to Utah last Saturday. He suffered the knee injury in the final minutes of that game. Allen is currently second in the Pac-12 in receptions this season with 61 behind USC’s Marqise Lee (76).
