Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent is set for a Sept. 23 trial date on charges of intoxication manslaughter after the death of teammate Jerry Brown, Bloomberg’s Thomas Korosec and Andrew Harris reported on Monday.

“That’s the date,” Debbie Denmon, a spokeswoman for the Dallas County district attorney’s office, told Bloomberg.

In late December, a Texas grand jury formally indicted Brent on one count of intoxication manslaughter in connection with a Dec. 8 crash that killed his friend Brown. Intoxication manslaughter carries a maximum sentence of 20 years.

Police say Brent was driving at least 110 miles per hour when he crashed in December, which killed Brown. He failed a field sobriety test and had a blood-alcohol level of more than twice the legal limit.

Last week, the Dallas Morning News reported that Brown will not play for Cowboys next season as he awaits trial. The week after the fatal crash, Brown appeared on the Cowboys sideline, to the surprise of many in the organization.

Dallas Cowboys nose tackle Josh Brent was driving at least 110 mph before losing control of his car in an accident that killed his teammate, according to police documents obtained by NBC 5.

Brent, who was moved to the team’s reserve/non-football injury/illness list, has been charged with intoxication manslaughter in the death of Cowboys practice squad member and friend Jerry Brown Jr.

On December 7, traffic surveillance cameras show Brent’s four-door Mercedes S600 driving prior to the accident, reportedly as fast as 134 mph on the way home from a nightclub.

Police reports say the car flipped after Brent lost control and hit a curb. The two players were not wearing seat belts, investigators said.

Brent’s blood-alcohol level was more than twice the state’s legal limit, according to police.

The Cowboys and Brown’s mother have attempted to support Brent in the wake of the tragedy, though the team did ask him to refrain from appearing on the sideline late in the 2012 season.

Nose tackle Josh Brent will not be allowed on the Cowboys’ sideline the remainder of the season, team and league sources said Tuesday, according to an ESPN.com report.

Team and NFL officials were unaware that Brent would be on the sideline Sunday after being charged with intoxication manslaughter two weeks ago in the crash that killed teammate Jerry Brown. Both the team and the league have agreed that his presence was not appropriate, sources said.

Brent’s appearance on the Cowboys’ sideline drew wide criticism in the media. CBS NFL Today analyst Boomer Esiason called the sight of Brent standing alongside teammates “disgraceful” and the “worst” kind of example considering his legal issues

According to sources, Brent originally was reluctant to attend the game, but changed his mind at the urging of several teammates. His status on the non-football injury list allowed him access to the stadium and field.

Coach Jason Garrett, who didn’t know Brent was at the stadium until pregame warmups, said Monday that Cowboys players were following the wishes of Brown’s mother, Stacey Jackson.

“I didn’t know he was going to be there and I saw him prior to the start of the game and really that was a result of the wishes of Stacey Jackson, Jerry Brown’s mom, who stood before us at the memorial on Tuesday and really encouraged everybody and almost made a plea to everybody to keep Josh in our family and to keep him close and support him in every way that we can,” said Garrett.

Garrett said once Brent became aware that his presence was creating controversy, he left Cowboys Stadium in the third quarter.

Owner Jerry Jones didn’t know Brent was on the team’s sideline until he saw him on his stadium suite television.

Dallas Cowboys team personnel were surprised that defensive tackle Josh Brent made an appearance on the sidelines of the team’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, reports ESPN.com.

The report says that Brent was at the game after his teammates and Jerry Brown’s mother urged him to go and that owner Jerry Jones and coach Jason Garrett were made aware that Brent was at the stadium just before the game was to begin. The Cowboys beat the Steelers 27-24 in overtime to keep their playoff hopes alive.

The team put Brent on the non-football injury list last week, so he is allowed to attend any team function. Brent left the game in the second half.  Brent, 25, is out on bail after being charged with intoxication manslaughter after the vehicle he was driving in hit a curb and killed Brown. Brent’s blood alcohol level was reportedly more than twice the legal limit for the state of Texas.

“Our team and our players wanted him today on the sideline,” Jones said. “Jerry’s mother asked us directly as a group. She said, ‘Support him. Help him. He needs your help. Jerry wants that. I want that.’ His teammates asked him to come and be down there with them, and that’s where we are. I do know that certainly that there’s the other side of the coin, but this is a case that the people that arguably he’s the closest to really wanting him around for him.”

Brown’s mother asked the other Cowboy players to help care for Brent and keep him involved with the team at Brown’s memorial service last week.

On the same day the Dallas Cowboys honored the late Jerry Brown, defensive tackle Josh Brent — the driver in the fatal one-car accident that killed Brown — was present on the team’s sidelines.

Brent drove the car in the accident last weekend and is facing intoxication manslaughter charges. He was released from jail after posting $500,000 bond. The Dallas Morning News reported earlier this week that Brown’s blood alcohol level was 0.18 at the time of the crash — more than twice the legal limit of 0.08 in Texas.

Brent attended Brown’s funeral earlier in the week, and Brown’s mother, Stacey Jackson, has forgiven Brent.

“[Brent] just knew that I was going to blame him or go off on him or hit him – but no,” Jackson said at Brown’s wake. “Jerry would frown down on me if I did that, because that’s not the way I raised him.”

The Cowboys honored Brent on Sunday by having a moment of silence before their game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. They also wore decals on their helmets.

But the Cowboys’ decision to allow Brent on their sideline drew some criticism, most notably from CBS analyst Boomer Esiason:

Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent had a blood alcohol level of more than twice the legal limit when he crashed his vehicle early Saturday that killed his teammate Jerry Brown, reports the Dallas Morning News.

Authorities in Irving, Texas have charged Brent with intoxication manslaughter and he is free on $500,000 bond. According to reports, Brent’s blood alcohol level was 0.18 and the legal limit in the state of Texas is .08 percent. Brent reportedly failed field sobriety tests after the crash and refused to take a breathalyzer test.

Brent, 25, is in his third NFL season and the team placed him on the reserve/non-football illness list earlier in the week.

A spokesman for the Irving Police Department said Wednesday that investigators may present the evidence they have in the case to the Dallas County district attorney’s office as soon as Thursday.

The Cowboys have moved Josh Brent to the non-football/injury illness list. Brent is currently facing intoxication manslaughter charges for drunk driving on Saturday morning in an incident that killed Coywboys teammate Jerry Brown. Brent is out on bail and technically able to work.

The team’s decision to move him to the non-football injury/illness list, according to Ed Werder of ESPN, gives Brent access to team facilities and support for the Cowboys.

The decision to move Brent to this list and give him support comes a day after the release of chilling reports that Brent had to be begged to pull teammate Brown from the crash on Saturday morning.

For now, the Cowboys have sidestepped the issue of how to discipline Brent. If Brent pleads guilty to his charges, the NFL will likely step in. The NFL set a precedent for this case when the league suspended Donte’ Stallworth for year, after he plead guilty to DUI manslaughter.

A sheriffs department in Texas in investigating the Dallas-based nightclub that served Dallas Cowboys nose tackle Josh Brent and the late Jerry Brown, who died in a car crash last week while Brent drove the car.

Privae, the nightclub that hosted 12 Cowboys that night and later said it is “saddened” by the news of Brown’s death, is also under investigation by The Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission. According to a report from Brent Schrotenboer of USA Today Sports, TABC is working with Irving police and has the ability to fine, suspend or completely revoke a liquor license:

The state is investigating to see if alcohol was “served to somebody who was intoxicated, which is illegal in Texas,” TABC spokeswoman Carolyn Beck said.

Brent was asked by the Brown family to meet them at the airport and sit by them during the funeral, according to ESPN reporter Ed Werder.

Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent is “devastated” at the death of former teammate Jerry Brown and wants to attend his memorial service, ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter reported on Monday.

Brent is accused of driving drunk and crashing the car that killed Brown over the weekend. Brown was released on $500,000 bond from an Irving, Texas, jail on Sunday.

A Cowboys spokesman told Schefter that the team will hold a private memorial for Brown on Tuesday. Schefter reported that Brent is not sure if he will attend because he “wants to be respectful.” Upon leaving jail Sunday night, Brent answered only one question thrown his way.

“Jerry Brown was my very best friend, and I’m just trying to deal with his death right now,” he told reporters.

“He is torn up,” said George Milner, Brown’s agent. “It’s not a good moment for anyone. I’m going to take him home. He needs family around him.”

Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent is being held and processed in jail on one charge of intoxication manslaughter after a Saturday morning car crash that left a teammate dead,  reports the Dallas Morning News.

Cowboys linebacker Jerry Brown, 25, a practice squad member, was a passenger in the car and was taken to a hospital, where he died.

An Irving, Texas police spokesman said the accident happened about 2:20 a.m. Saturday. Brent was speeding when the vehicle hit a curb and flipped at least once.

NFL.com reports that Irving police has Brent, otherwise known as Joshua Price-Brent, is in police custody, as he was booked at 4:14 a.m. local time. The Cowboys were on a plane to Cincinnati where they are set to play the Bengals on Sunday when media and non-essential personnel were asked to leave the plane. The media was told that Brent was not on the charter.

“Officers at the scene believed alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash; therefore, Price-Brent was asked to perform field sobriety tests,” a statement from the Irving Police Department said. “Based on the results of the tests, along with the officer’s observations and conversations with Price-Brent, he was arrested for driving while intoxicated. He was transported to an area hospital for a mandatory blood draw. Once it was learned that the passenger of his vehicle had died as a result of the crash, Price-Brent was booked into the Irving City Jail on one count of Intoxication Manslaughter.”

Brent is in his third season with the Cowboys and was a supplemental draft selection in 2010 after playing at Illinois in college.
