Chicago Cubs third baseman Ian Stewart was scratched from Wednesday’s game against the Detroit Tigers, and afterward manager Dale Sveum said that Stewart would be placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sore left wrist, according to Jordan Bernfield of WGN Radio.
Stewart had been playing with a balky wrist for a couple of weeks. He was batting .201 with five homers and 17 RBIs in 55 games in his first year with Chicago after being acquired from the Colorado Rockies. Joe Mather started at third on Wednesday, but Jeff Baker has also seen time there this season.
Infielder Luis Valbuena, who was claimed off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays just before the season, appears the likely candidate to take Stewart’s roster spot.
