San Diego Padres closer Huston Street never made it to first base while trying to record the final out of his team’s 9-8 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates, pulling up lame with a leg injury. First baseman Yonder Alonso made the play unassisted to preserve Street’s 21st save in as many chances.

Street appeared to be in severe pain as he was helped off the field. Craig Elsten of 619 Sports Radio has more details:

The Padres just signed Street to a two-year, $14 million extension two weeks ago. Either righthander Dale Thayer, who was 5-for-5 in save situations when Street missed time earlier this season, or righty Luke Gregerson is expected to assume closer duties if Street has to miss any time.

UPDATE: Street’s injury apparently is not as devastating as feared, according to Leila Rahimi of Fox Sports San Diego:

MLB.com also has quotes from Street and manager Bud Black, with Black predicting that Street will be “out for a while.”

The Colorado Rockies have agreed to send closer Huston Street to the San Diego Padres in return for a minor leaguer, according to a tweet from Thomas Harding of MLB.com.

According to Harding, the Padres are expected to pick up most of the remaining $8 million in guaranteed money on Street’s current deal, which could mean that the Rockies are clearing space to make a free-agent move. Street, 28, will likely serve as a replacement closer for San Diego who lost Heath Bell to the Marlins in free-agency this week.

There had been a great deal of interest in Street from teams this offseason. It had previously been reported that the Toronto Blue Jays, Baltimore Orioles, Miami Marlins, Boston Red Sox, Cincinnati Reds, and the New York Mets were all interested in the right-hander.

Last season in 58.1 innings pitched, Street posted 55 strikeouts and a 29 saves with a 3.68 ERA.

The Baltimore Orioles and the Toronto Blue Jays have both reportedly inquired about the availability of Colorado Rockies closer Huston Street, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

The 28-year-old stopper posted a 3.86 ERA in 62 appearances for Colorado last season, and earned a team-high 29 saves. The former Oakland Athletics closer has averaged a 3.11 ERA and 29 saves over the past seven seasons.

Kevin Gregg served as the Orioles closer in 2011, but recorded just 22 saves and posted a 4.37 ERA on the year. The previous season he had posted a 3.51 ERA and 37 saves for the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Blue Jays are looking to sure up their bullpen which used both Frank Francisco and Jon Rauch as their closers in 2011. Francisco recorded 17 saves with a 3.55 ERA and Rauch collected 11 saves with a 4.85 ERA.
