Huston Street injury: Padres closer pulls up lame covering first on final out

San Diego Padres closer Huston Street never made it to first base while trying to record the final out of his team’s 9-8 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates, pulling up lame with a leg injury. First baseman Yonder Alonso made the play unassisted to preserve Street’s 21st save in as many chances.
Street appeared to be in severe pain as he was helped off the field. Craig Elsten of 619 Sports Radio has more details:
Oh my goodness. On save #21 in 21 tries it looked like Huston Street just popped his Achilles. Came up lame on the cover of 1st. Looked BAD.—

Street was jogging from mound to first on ground ball and pulled up like he had been shot in the leg. Awful looking injury, helped off field—

The Padres just signed Street to a two-year, $14 million extension two weeks ago. Either righthander Dale Thayer, who was 5-for-5 in save situations when Street missed time earlier this season, or righty Luke Gregerson is expected to assume closer duties if Street has to miss any time.
UPDATE: Street’s injury apparently is not as devastating as feared, according to Leila Rahimi of Fox Sports San Diego:
Huston Street has a calf strain. Said he has to reevaluate in the morning.—

MLB.com also has quotes from Street and manager Bud Black, with Black predicting that Street will be “out for a while.”
