Outfielder Hideki Matsui plans to announce his retirement from baseball on Thursday night, reports the YES Network’s Jack Curry. An official press conference will be held in New York. As a free agent, Matsui drew some interest from big league teams this winter but decided not to return.

Matsui, 38, was born in Ishikawa, Japan and spent 10 years in the Major Leagues. He played for the Yankees for the majority of his career (2003-2009) and also had one-year stints with the Angels, A’s and Devil Rays. Matsui was a career .282/.360/.462 hitter and was named the World Series MVP in 2009.

Hideki Matsui may have played his last Major League Baseball game as the the Tampa Rays have designated the designated hitter for assignment in order to create a spot for the recently acquired Ryan Roberts, according to a report Wednesday afternoon from C. Trent Rosecrans of CBSSports.com:

His last at-bat as a Ray, and likely as a Major League player, came Sunday when he popped up with two on and two out to end a 2-1 loss to the Mariners.

It would be a rather anticlimactic end to an otherwise illustrious career highlighted by his 2009 World Series MVP as a member of the New York Yankees. Over the course of his 10-year career, in which he also played for the Los Angeles Angels and Oakland A’s, Matsui hit .282/.360/.462 and recorded 175 home runs.

Matsui, 38, signed a minor league deal with the Rays in April and was called up a month later. His 103 plate appearances over 34 games with the Rays resulted in only two home runs and seven RBIs. He has especially struggled as of late, failing to connect for a hit in his past nine games.

The New York Yankees are considering adding a left-handed bat before the start of spring training, and they’re eying three of the most prominent remaining free agents on the open market, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney. That would be Raul Ibanez, Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui.

Damon, 38, played for the Yankees previously between 2006 and ’09. He hit .282 with 24 homers for the 2009 team that won the World Series. Damon is a career .286 hitter in 17 seasons with Kansas City, Oakland, Boston, New York, Detroit and Tampa Bay.

Matsui, 37, spent his first nine major league seasons with the Yankees. He left before the 2010 season, spending one year with the Angels and one with the Athletics. He’s a career .285 hitter with 173 home runs.

Ibanez is the oldest of the three — he turns 40 in June. He was an All-Star for the 2009 Phillies. He’s a .280 hitter with 252 homers in 16 seasons with Seattle, Kansas City and Philadelphia.

A source tells Olney that one of the three sluggers could be on the team within a week.
