Report: Rolando McClain close to deal with Ravens

Decrease fontDecrease font
Enlarge fontEnlarge font

Former Oakland Raiders linebacker Rolando McClain is close to a deal with the Baltimore Ravens, reports ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Twitter.

McClain would give Baltimore flexibility at linebacker, where the team has lost depth this offseason. Ray Lewis retired after Baltimore won the Super Bowl, and Paul Kruger signed with the Cleveland Browns. Baltimore already added Elvis Dumervil at outside linebacker. McClain would help fill the opening inside.

While no one expects McClain to suddenly match Lewis’ production and leadership, he could be a temporary solution. Plus, at only 23 years old, the former first-round pick may still have upside. McClain started 38 games in his three seasons with Oakland. In 2011, he had 79 tackles.

But last season, he lost his starting job and was suspended two games for conduct detrimental to the team. Oakland released him earlier this offseason.

(BANKS: NFL Mock Draft 4.0)

The Ravens may still address linebacker early in the NFL Draft. But if they can sign McClain, Baltimore would avoid having to reach for a player out of need.

  • Ex-Bronco Elvis Dumervil reportedly agrees to deal with Baltimore Ravens

After a lengthy contract controversy, defensive end/linebacker Elvis Dumervil has agreed to a multi-year contract with the Baltimore Ravens, according to The Denver Post‘s Mike Klis.

The deal is for five years and up to $35 million, including $8.5 million next season, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Dumervil became a free agent when the restructured contract he was discussing with the Denver Broncos, with whom he has spent his first six seasons, was not filed in time for the March 16 deadline, when his $12 million salary would have become guaranteed for 2013-14.

The three-time Pro Bowler has since fired his agent and received offers from the Broncos and Ravens, according to Klis.

Dumervil signed a six-year, $61.5-million contract with Denver in 2010 after posting a career-high 17 sacks, but missed the entire 2010 season due to injury. He has 20.5 sacks over the last two seasons, yet the Broncos were hesitant to pay a premium price for him.

The team’s offer was worth $18 million over three years, Klis is reporting.

Though Denver converted him back into a defensive end, the position he played at Louisville, Dumervil will play outside linebacker across from Terrell Suggs in the Ravens’ 3-4 defense.

This is the Super Bowl champions’ first major addition of the offseason, after Baltimore lost key players in Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Bernard Pollard, Paul Kruger and Anquan Boldin.

The Broncos will now set their sights on defensive end John Abraham, who was cut by the Falcons, and longtime Colts star Dwight Freeney, according to Klis.

Free agent Elvis Dumervil has received formal contract offers from the Denver Broncos and Baltimore Ravens, The Denver Post’s Mike Klis reported on Thursday.

The Broncos have offered Dumervil a more front-loaded contract, according to the report. The team is attempting to re-sign Dumervil after a much-publicized contract snafu last week that led the team to cut him. But the organization is handicapped somewhat by the $4.89 million salary-cap hit it took when releasing Dumervil last week and may have to release a player or two in order to sign Dumervil.

Dumervil is not happy with the front-loaded contract from the Broncos, according to the report.

The Miami Dolphins and Tennessee Titans are also in discussions with Dumervil’s agent, Tom Condon, but they have yet to present any formal offers.

The Broncos cut Dumervil on Friday because of a late paperwork filing the team blamed on Dumervil’s camp. Denver executive vice president John Elway said the team did not receive a fax in time after Dumervil had agreed to take a pay cut next season. Dumervil has since fired his agent.

The 29-year-old Dumervil had 54 tackles, 11 sacks and six forced fumbles while playing in all 16 games with the Broncos last season.

The Broncos have backup plans in defensive ends Dwight Freeney and John Abraham in case they fail to re-sign Dumervil. But each left Denver without a deal on Thursday.

It’s been a whirlwind of a free agency so far for Elvis Dumervil, his former agent and the Denver Broncos — a whirlwind that may end back where it began. The three-time Pro Bowl defensive end has received an offer to return to the team that cut him less than a week ago after his agent failed to meet a deadline for his renegotiated contract.

The agent, Marty Magid, has since parted ways with Dumervil and has hired an attorney in case he faces litigation or discipline from the NFL Players Association.

Broncos executive vice president of football operations John Elway confirmed that the team wants Dumervil to return and has offered him a contract, though he wouldn’t go into specifics about the terms of the proposed deal, according to a report late Tuesday night from Mike Kils of the Denver Post:

“We’ve offered Elvis a contract. We’d like to have Elvis back.”

According to the report, it is “expected” that the contract will be for three years and “considerably less” than the $30 million of his initial deal. As Kils points out, the situation is slightly complicated by the fact that Dumervil’s new agent, Tom Condon, also represents pass-rushing defensive end Dwight Freeney who is among those players considered as a “back up plan” for the Broncos.

Earlier, Jeff Legwold of the Denver Post reported that Broncos head coach John Fox said Dumervil was “in the mix” to return, but now it appears that he will in fact head back to Denver, unless the Baltimore Ravens, the only other team known at this time to be in play for him, can secure a deal, according to CBS Sports NFL Inside Jason La Canfora.

While free-agent Elvis Dumervil is being courted by the several teams, the agent he fired after failing to submit contract paperwork to the league regarding an execution has hired an attorney, reports ESPN.com.

Marty Magid hired David Cornwell, who has represented players and agents in the past.  The report says Magid hired Cornwell just in case he should face any future litigation or be subject to discipline by the NFL Players Association.

The Denver Broncos released Dumervil shortly before the 4 p.m. ET deadline last Friday when his contract reducing his salary to $8 million from $12 million arrived via fax seven minutes late. Magid was fired the next day.

Cornwell confirmed Tuesday at the NFL owners meetings that he is now representing the agent, Marty Magid, most likely as a preemptive move in the event Magid should face any future litigation or be subject to discipline by the NFL Players Association.

Dumervil hired Tom Condon as his new agent and Broncos team president John Elway said the team had extended a new contract offer to Dumervil.

Elvis has left the building. But he might return.

Denver Broncos head coach John Fox said Tuesday that Elvis Dumervil is “definitely in the mix” for a possible return to the team. The news comes less than a week after the defensive end and his agent failed to submit a signed, renegotiated contract by a 2 p.m. deadline.

Since then, the Pro Bowler  has parted ways with his agent and has drawn interest from a number of teams including the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers.

But according to a report Tuesday from Jeff Legwold of the Denver Post, Fox is talking to the three-time Pro Bowler about bringing him back to the team:

“He’s definitely in the mix. He’s a player I know I’ve enjoyed coaching, he’s done good things for our staff, defensively, our football team. He’s definitely a guy who is in the mix for us, will be in the mix, should be in the mix. And we’ll see where that takes us.”

Dumervil, 29, finished third in voting last season for Defensive Player of the Year. Last season for the Broncos, he recorded 11 sacks, 54 total tackles, a safety and six forced fumbles.

The latest chapter of the longstanding rivalry between the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers could be an offseason battle for free-agent pass rusher Elvis Dumervil.

Because of a contract snafu, the Denver Broncos cut Dumervil on Friday. The Baltimore Sun’s Aaron Wilson reported on Sunday that the Ravens and Steelers — along with the New England Patriots and Tennessee Titans — could be two of the teams looking to scoop up Dumervil.

Both the Steelers and Ravens are looking for pass-rushing help after losing two of the AFC North’s marquee names this offseason. The Steelers were forced to cut James Harrison because of salary-cap issues, and the Ravens lost linebacker Paul Kruger to the Cleveland Browns.

The Broncos cut Dumervil on Friday because of a late paperwork filing the team blamed on Dumervil’s camp. Denver executive vice president John Elway said the team did not receive a fax in time after Dumervil had agreed to take a pay cut next season. Dumervil has since fired his agent.

The National Football League Players Association will look into what happened when contract documents were not received causing the release of Denver Broncos defensive end Elvis Dumervil, The Denver Post reports.

The Broncos released Dumervil on Friday because paperwork of his restructured deal that included a 2013 salary cut from $12 million to $8 million did not reach the league office by the 4 p.m. ET deadline.

The Broncos were on the hook for Dumervil’s $12 million guaranteed salary if he was not released by that deadline.

DeMaurice Smith, executive director of the NFL Players Association, has asked for an inquiry into the tardy exchange of contract documents that led the Broncos to release defensive end Elvis Dumervil.

“Due to the procedural elements that were involved in executing the new proposal, we imposed a 1 p.m. MDT deadline for a decision, one hour before the NFL’s waiver wire at 2 p.m. MDT. Our deadline was clearly communicated to Elvis’ representative,” Broncos president John Elway said in the statement. “At 1 p.m. MDT, we were informed by Elvis’ representative that he declined our offer. We then prepared Elvis’ termination notice to officially file his release with the NFL office.”

  • Report: Elvis Dumervil parts ways with agent Marty Magid after contract snafu

    Decrease fontDecrease font
    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

The day after a contract snafu that forced him into free agency, defensive end/linebacker Elvis Dumervil has parted ways with agent Marty Magid, according to The Baltimore Sun‘s Aaron Wilson.

Dumervil and Magid agreed to a restructured deal that would have involved the player accepting a $4 million pay cut, according to the Associated Press, but the team received the signed contract seven minutes after the deadline.

Magid blamed the Broncos for the error, telling USA Today that the team made late changes to the financial details. There is no animosity between Dumervil and the agent, according to Wilson.

Magid works for MRM Sports & Entertainment, which also represents mostly low-profile players, such as Ravens running back Bernard Pierce. He will waive the five-day waiting period the NFLPA requires for players wanting to change agents, Wilson is reporting.

Tom Condon of Creative Artists Agency, who represents both of the Manning brothers, is the leading candidate to become Dumervil’s new agent, according to FoxSports.com’s Alex Marvez.

Dumervil, who posted 63.5 sacks and made three Pro Bowls in his six years with the Broncos, has reportedly drawn interest from several teams, including the Ravens.

Broncos DE Elvis Dumervil had agreed to take a pay cut to remain with the Denver Broncos. However, Mike Klis has more recently reported that Dumervil’s contract was not filed with the NFL in time. Dumervil has officially been released.

Denver Broncos president John Elway said earlier this week that defensive end Elvis Dumervil‘s contract is “out of whack” and wanted him to take a pay cut.

That “out of whack” contract was supposedly taken care of. Dumervil agreed on Friday to take a pay cut to stay with the team next season, according to NFL.com.

Dumervil was scheduled to make $12 million and now will take in $8 million next season. The deal also includes a $3.5 million guarantee on the second day of league year in 2014.

“He’s a Bronco, bro. We gotta file the paperwork,” Dumeril’s agent Marty Magid told the Denver Post.

“It’s not all about dollars. But when it’s way out of whack? Then it’s so out of whack that you’ve got to say: That [salary] can’t be it,” Elway said Thursday, according to the Denver Post. “Especially when you look at the market and what’s out there now. It’s so far out of whack. Hopefully, he realizes that.”

But because Denver didn’t file Dumervil’s contract in time, the defensive end has been released.

The agent for Denver Broncos linebacker/defensive end Elvis Dumervil responded to the team’s desire for Dumervil to take a pay cut, telling the Denver Post‘s Mike Klis that he and his client are open to negotiation.

The Broncos made their stance clear on Wednesday, when reports said that the team would consider trading or cutting the 29-year-old if his salary could not be slashed.

Dumervil’s agent, Marty Magid, said the sides have mutual interest in what he termed a “restructure” rather than a pay cut.

“They informed us they want to do a restructure,” Magid said during a phone interview. “I’m not classifying this as a pay cut. I’m going ahead with this being a restructure. If we can meet on some common ground, there’s a potential we can get it done. If we can’t, they’ll have to make a decision. But we’re definitely in good faith going to try to negotiate this out.

“Elvis wants to return as a Bronco if it all possible, and that’s what we’re trying to do — make the client happy and try to appease the team.”

Dumervil, a three-time Pro Bowler with 63.5 career sacks in six seasons, signed a six-year, $61.5-million contract extension in July 2010 after posting a career-high 17 sacks in 2009. He subsequently tore a pectoral muscle and missed the entire 2010 season.

Based on the offseason timeline, the situation will likely be resolved within the next 10 days.

Magid said no deadline has been given to him, but two are out there — Tuesday, when NFL free agency opens, and March 16, when Dumervil’s $12 million salary would become guaranteed.

If a deal isn’t worked out, Dumervil probably would go to the top of the free-agent, pass-rushing defensive ends or outside linebackers available, along with Paul Kruger, Cliff Avril, Dwight Freeney and John Abraham.

Elvis Dumervil will not face charges of aggravated assault, according to a report from the Denver Post.

The Denver Broncos’ Pro Bowl defensive end was arrested in Miami on July 15 after being implicated in a road rage incident involving firearms. According to the Post, Dumervil and a friend had reportedly approached the occupants of a white Chevy Impala and raised their shirts to display guns tucked into their waistbands, as part of an ongoing road feud.

However, Dumervil maintained his innocence, and it appears from the lack of charges that not enough evidence of wrongdoing exists.

Denver Broncos defensive end Elvis Dumervil was arrested in Miami on Saturday night for aggravated assault with a firearm, according to CBS Denver.

His bond was set at $7,500. The Broncos issued a statement following his arrest, saying they are aware of the incident and are treating it very seriously:

“Our organization is aware of the matter and is continuing to gather the facts. This is a very serious allegation, and we will thoroughly review the details while the legal process runs its course.”

He led the National Football League in sacks in 2009 but shortly after signing a six-year, $61.5 million contract extension with the Bronocs, Dmervil suffered a torn pectoral muscle and missed the entire 2010 season.

According to the report from CBS Denver, Miami police have remained mum on the details of his arrest.
