Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Darrelle Revis said Monday he plans to be the same player that he was before he was injured.

Revis was a three-time first-team All-Pro with the New York Jets before tearing the ACL in his right knee last season. He was traded to the Bucs in March and then given a $96 million contract with none of it guaranteed.

“The first time I step out there, I’ll be fine,” Revis said, according to NFL.com.

Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano said he agrees with that assessment.

“That’s how we’re planning,” Schiano told Kremer. “I mean, we have faith that he’s gonna recover. And look, if it isn’t exactly that way right away, then we’ll adapt; 85- or 90 percent of Darrelle Revis is still better than most 100 percent other corners, right?”

Revis says he now can cut and change directions in drills as his rehab remains on schedule.

“I call it just getting ready for Week 1,” Revis replied. “It doesn’t matter if it’s the Jets, the Bills, it doesn’t matter who it is. We go to go out there and play as a team and win.”

  • Bucs’ Darrelle Revis will wear #24, safety Mark Barron #23

    Decrease fontDecrease font
    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Darrelle Revis will keep his jersey number and wear 24 for the upcoming season, the team announced on Friday.

Second-year safety Mark Barron wore the jersey number last season after being picked with the seventh overall selection in the 2012 NFL Draft.

The Buccaneers traded for Revis the Monday before this year’s draft after he spent his first six seasons with the New York Jets. “Revis Island” became known league wide as opponents’ wide receivers had little success catching passes against Revis. He was named first-team All-Pro for three straight seasons before an ACL injury cut short his campaign in 2012.

    More from the Captain’s Blog:

Leaving the issue of how the transfer was negotiated between teammates, the Bucs confirmed on Friday that Revis will wear #24 and Barron will move to #23.  That also necessitated the move of CB Myron Lewis from #23 to #31, the number E.J. Biggers previously wore before departing in free agency.

So jersey #24 will still be prominently featured in the Buccaneers’ secondary this year, just one level closer to the line.  Barron, sporting #23, will play beside new safety teammate Dashon Goldson, #38.  Returning CB Eric Wright is still sporting #21 and second-round draft pick CB Johnthan Banks has taken over #27, last worn by RB LeGarrette Blount.  The Bucs even avoided giving #24 temporarily to a player on a tryout contract this weekend at the Bucs’ rookie mini-camp.

  • Nick Saban unhappy with media’s tone on Dee Milliner, Darrelle Revis

    Decrease fontDecrease font
    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

Alabama coach Nick Saban isn’t happy with the media making an immediate comparison of Dee Milliner and Darrelle Revis. Milliner, Saban’s former cornerback, was selected ninth by the Jets in the NFL Draft on Thursday night. Milliner as a replacement to the recently departed Revis is on everyone’s mind, which doesn’t sit well with Saban.

    From ProFootballTalk’s report:

“I can already tell the tone of what you all are doing,” Saban told reporters. “What’s Revis got to do with Dee Milliner coming here? Just let Dee Milliner be Dee Milliner. Let Dee Milliner play like Dee Milliner plays. Whether Revis used to play there or not, what’s that got to do with Dee Milliner? Why do you want to make comparisons and make it like a circumstance for the guy before he ever gets a chance to go on the field? I think Dee has a vision for the kind of player that he wants to be, and I think he’ll be a very, very good player for a long time.”

Saban told the media that comparing Milliner to Revis, who was recently traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, would be counterproductive for Milliner and the team.

“People have a much better chance of helping Dee Milliner be successful by being positive and supportive rather than being difficult on him,” Saban said.

While it’s true that it would be better for New York to see Milliner as a new cornerback — and a top 10 pick — fans will undoubtedly consider Milliner the heir apparent to Revis.

Oregon linebacker Dion Jordan and Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner are expected to open training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, reports ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The two are among the highest rated defensive players of this year’s draft, and both underwent surgeries for torn labrums during the offseason.

For Milliner, it was his fifth surgery, which may affect his draft stock. His other surgeries include a right knee scope, sports hernia, right tibia stress fracture, and shoulder.  The Browns and Jets have both shown interest in the cornerback, and the Jets may look to use Milliner as a replacement for the recently traded Darrelle Revis.

The Tampa Bay Rays wasted no time in trying to fill some seats for the three-game set against their American League East rivals the New York Yankees.

According to the team’s Twitter feed, they invited new Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Darrelle Revis to throw out the ceremonial first pitch for tonight’s game. The Rays have averaged 22,634 for their nine home games so far this season.

Revis agreed to a new six-year deal with the Bucs is worth $96 million, but reportedly none of it is guaranteed. Too bad he doesn’t play baseball where most of the contracts are guaranteed.

Darrelle Revis saluted Jets fans on Twitter Sunday night,  hours after the team finalized a trade to send the star cornerback to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for this year’s 13th overall pick in the NFL Draft and another selection next year.

    The full message is below:

“Ibeen sitting around for the last hour trying to figure out what to say to the Jet Nation & I came up with this. The six years I played for the New York Jets were unbelievable. I put my body on the line everyday & did everything could to help the team win. I experienced a lot & & learned a lot. The memories I had in New York I will keep dearly to my heart. I want to thank all the jets fans for making me feel welcome.”

Not everyone in the Revis camp was as sentimental after his departure. One source close to Revis told the New York Daily News’ Manish Mehta that the “organization is not committed to winning.”

After being traded by the Jets, Darrelle Revis has agreed to terms with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on a six-year deal, the Bucs announced on Sunday.

Tampa Bay sent a 2013 first-round pick and a conditional 2014 3rd- or 4th-rounder to New York in exchange for the star cornerback.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the six-year contract will pay Revis $16 million each season for a total of $96 million, but none of that money is guaranteed even though he is recovering from a torn ACL.

It will make him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.

[Burke: Darrelle Revis trade impacts Buccaneers, Jets, 2013 NFL Draft]

Revis’ agents, Schwartz & Feinsod, first tweeted the news of the deal, before his marketing and business manager, John Geiger, tweeted a photo of Revis signing his contract.

Revis’ former teammate, Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie, already expressed his disapproval of the move.

The Jets drafted Revis with the 14th overall pick in the 2007 draft. He emerged as a Pro Bowler in 2008 and made four straight Pro Bowls — leading New York to the playoffs in 2008 and 2009 — before suffering the knee injury during the second game of the 2012 season.

Darrelle Revis’ former partner in the New York Jets’ secondary summed up his feelings on the team’s pending trade of the All-Pro cornerback in two words: “It sucks,” Antonio Cromartie told the New York Daily News.

After months of speculation, the Jets agreed to trade Revis to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, pending a physical.

Cromartie, who formed one of the NFL’s top cornerback tandems with Revis in 2010 and ’11, lamented the move shortly after it was announced.

From the Daily News‘ Manish Mehta:

“It sucks. That’s my reaction: It sucks,” Cromartie told the News. “Losing a guy like that just sucks. A leader in the locker room, a leader in the classroom, a leader on the field. A great playmaker on the field. It just sucks losing a guy like that.”

“I’m surprised really, to tell you the truth,” Cromartie added. “I’m surprised more so than anything.”

“I know it’s a business… but I don’t even have a reaction now,” Cromartie said. “I don’t even know what to say…. I was thinking last year when I saw him that it was going to be the both of us (on the Jets) for a long time. But I understand the business standpoint of it.”

Cromartie, entering his eighth season, added that he does not believe the deal is an indication that the Jets are rebuilding, explaining that he’s “too old” to talk about rebuilding.

The New York Jets are pausing the Darrelle Revis talks, according to a report from ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio. It seems that the Jets are trying to squeeze more out of the Bucs, the only team pursuing Revis.

Per Peter King, the Bucs are offering first-, third- and fifth-round picks for Revis. Despite a perceived tension between the two teams over whether the first round pick would come in the 2013 or 2014 draft, the Bucs were willing to give up the first-rounder this year, the 13th overall selection.

It’s unlikely that the Jets will be keeping Revis; instead, Jets GM John Idzik is probably pushing the Bucs to see how much he can get for Revis.

The cornerback underwent surgery to repair his torn ACL back in October, and is scheduled to have an MRI some time on Monday. The results of the MRI could affect the way trade talks play out.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are willing to trade the No. 13 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft to the New York Jets in exchange for All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis, but the Jets are looking for a lot more compensation, reports ProFootballtalk.com.

Revis has been the subject of trade talks the entire offseason as he has been looking for a long-term deal. Revis signed a four-year, $46 million contract in 2010, which contained $32.5 million guaranteed.  Starting in 2014, the next three years of his contract are voidable.

The Buccaneers have a loosely, self-imposed deadline of about a week before the draft to complete a trade for Revis, reports the Tampa Bay Times.

    From ProFootballTalk:

Multiple sources with knowledge of the situation tell PFT that the Buccaneers are willing to send the 13th overall pick in the 2013 draft to the Jets for Revis.  The Jets, however, want “a lot more” than this year’s first-round pick, we’re told.

It’s unclear what else the Jets want.  Last month, the Vikings got a first-round pick in 2013, a seventh-round pick in 2013, and a third-round pick in 2014 for receiver Percy Harvin.  It’s possible the Jets want that, or something close to it.

The three-day NFL Draft starts Thursday, April 25.

Trade talks between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Jets for star cornerback Darrelle Revis appear to have hit an impasse, as the Buccaneers are growing frustrated with the pace of negotiations.

Citing three sources, Yahoo Sports’ Jason Cole reported Sunday of the roadblock between the Jets and Buccaneers, who appear to be the only serious trade partner for Revis.

    From Cole’s report:

The Buccaneers are not only willing to trade a combination of a first-, third- and sixth-round picks for Revis, they are also willing to pay the corner in the area of $15-16 million per year on a long-term contract.

Idzik, who did not return a text message sent to him by Yahoo! Sports, has been coy about trading Revis. He has repeatedly said he is not “actively” trying to trade Revis, though multiple teams have said he is willing to listen to offers.

At this point, the Bucs or any other team interested in having Revis long-term may simply wait until he becomes a free agent in the offseason rather than trade for him.

Cole’s report came on the same day ESPN.com’s Rich Cimini reported on another developing rift between Revis and the Jets. The team is insisting that they will enforce language in Revis’ contract that only provides him with bonus money if he participates in the Jets’ offseason conditioning program.

According to Cimini’s report, Revis wants to stay in Arizona, where he has been rehabbing his surgically repaired knee with his personal trainer. He would like to avoid any distractions that come with a trip to the Jets’ training facility. But he is expected to participate in order to collect $3 million in bonus money.

Although Darrelle Revis and the New York Jets are at odds over the star cornerback’s contract, Revis will have plenty of incentive to attend the team’s voluntary workouts.

A clause in Revis’ contract requires him to participate in voluntary workouts in order to receive bonus money, according to ESPN.com’s Rich Cimini.

Revis, who is entering the final year of a four-year, $46-million contract, is expected to report to the team’s offseason conditioning program when it begins on April 15. If he does not report, it would cost him $3 million, according to Cimini.

    From the report:

When Revis renegotiated his contract in 2010, following his second holdout in three years, he agreed to a clause that requires his attendance in all offseason activities — even non-mandatory workouts, sources said.

If Revis doesn’t participate in approximately 80 percent of the workouts, he will forfeit not only a $1 million workout bonus, but two other bonuses — a $1 million roster bonus (triggered March 17, but payable at a later date) and a $1 million reporting bonus at the start of training camp.

They’re tied together, providing significant financial motivation to attend. It was the Jets’ way of making sure Revis stays on his best behavior, an aspect of his four-year, $46 million contract that was kept relatively quiet — until now.

The Jets plan to have Revis, 27, abide by the requirement, even though he is still rehabbing from a torn ACL that he suffered in October. The team has made the four-time Pro Bowler, available in trade talks throughout the offseason.

Rapoport states that Revis wants to stay with the New York Jets but it is unlikely the team will meet Revis’ contract demands.

Revis can opt out of his current deal and become an unrestricted free agent after the 2013 season. The Bucs are reportedly bullish on surrendering their 13th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft in a trade for Revis.

The six-year cornerback has recorded 19 interceptions and 241 tackles over his career with the New York Jets.

Jets coach Rex Ryan told reporters that the team was not actively trying to trade cornerback Darrelle Revis, according to Bart Hubbach of the New York Post. Ryan emphasized that they were open to all possibilities, including an extension for Revis. The Jets have been openly engaged in discussions with other teams to ship Revis elsewhere over the past few weeks.

Revis, 27, was drafted by the Jets in the first round (14th overall) of the 2007 draft. He’s been a starter for all six years, but suffered a season-ending knee injury in a game against the Dolphins last September and underwent reconstructive surgery in October. With a contract of $11.5 million per year, Revis is the NFL’s highest paid defensive back, according to the NFL’s Albert Breer.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have not ruled out trading their first-round pick for New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis, the Tampa Bay Times’ Rick Stroud reported on Monday.

At the NFL owners spring meetings in Arizona on Monday, Tampa Bay general manager Mark Dominik did not hide his potential interest in Revis, who has been the subject of trade rumors throughout the NFL offseason.

“If we think it’s in the best interest of the team, we will do something,’’ Dominik told Stroud. “If that’s a player that everybody is speculating (Revis) or maybe it’s a player at a position that nobody has thought about. But certainly, these meetings are very healthy for those kinds of discussions to see if there is a way to get this team better and does that include players or draft picks or a combination? That’s what we’ll look at.’’

The Buccaneers have the 13th pick in next month’s NFL Draft. But the team views Revis as much more of a sure thing in its attempt to revamp its secondary. Last week, the Bucs agreed to a five-year deal with former 49ers safety Dashon Goldson.

Dominik gushed about the rarity of a shutdown corner like Revis.

“They’re really hard to find,’’ Dominik said. “They really are rare and that makes them an interesting commodity. You go into the draft every year and everybody thinks maybe that’s the guy but there are very few of them. When they come out, it’s pretty noticeable who they are.’’

According to Stroud, however, any deal likely wouldn’t get done for at least the next few weeks.

The Jets reportedly have a “good” trade offer on the table for cornerback Darrelle Revis. (Gregory Shamus/Getty Images)

The New York Jets have received what one NFL source calls a “good” trade proposal for star cornerback Darrelle Revis, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio reported Monday.

    From Florio’s report:

A league source tells PFT that the Jets have an offer on the table for Revis.  Per the source, the offer is a “good” one, both as to the compensation given to the team and the financial package that would be extended to Revis.

Revis could be the next big name to be traded after a flurry of significant moves Monday that sent wide receiver Percy Harvin to the Seattle Seahawks and Anquan Boldin to the San Francisco 49ers.

The 49ers have been one of the teams expressing interest in a trade for Revis, who said last week that it would be “awesome” to play in San Francisco. The Daily News reported last week that the Jets have two or three “legitimate buyers” serious about obtaining Revis, who has one year left on his contract.

Florio reported Monday that the Jets have not shared with Revis what kind of new contract would be offered to him under the “good” trade proposal on the table. Any team trading for Revis while giving up a high draft pick would presumably want the opportunity to sign the star corner to a long-term deal that extends beyond next season.

The New York Jets appear likely to trade star cornerback Darrelle Revis, and the Falcons and 49ers have emerged as two possible trade partners, reports the New York Daily News‘ Manish Mehta.

The Jets have spent the offseason trying to decide what to do with the four-time Pro Bowl cornerback. Revis is among the NFL’s best defensive players, but he is coming off a torn ACL and wants a long-term contract.

A source told Mehta that Revis will be traded.

“He’s gone,” a source familiar with the situation said Tuesday. “This is happening. They’re moving him. They can’t keep him. They’re rebuilding. They’re starting fresh.”

The 49ers have long been rumored as a possible destination for Revis. San Francisco has a need at cornerback and a bevy of draft picks it could trade. The 49ers, the reigning NFC champions, may feel that Revis is a player who can put them over the top.

Mehta also reports the Falcons have interest. Atlanta general manager Thomas Dimitroff has shown a willingness to deal draft picks for a shot at one star player. The Falcons traded up 21 spots in the 2011 draft to grab wide receiver Julio Jones, a move that helped key their run to the NFC title game this year.

Multiple reporters on Twitter have since reported that the Falcons do not have serious interest in trading for the cornerback at this time.

New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis says he was “speechless” when his name came up in trade rumors and that the team needs to provide answers to him as to what his status with the team is.

Revis missed the majority of the 2012 season when he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in September. He says he has spoken with new general manager John Idzik and wants to know how the rumors got out in the first place.

“I was speechless; I tweeted it out I was speechless. I was speechless because I didn’t get a phone call,” Revis said in an interview with NFL network. “I know it’s a business — just call me; don’t have it lingering out there. I need answers and I’m not getting any. Just the fact that that was put out there instead of contacting your best player on the team. If that’s how you want to do business, then that’s fine.”

Revis signed a four-year, $46 million in 2010 that included $32.5 million in guarantees.  His contract stipulates that he cannot be slapped with the franchise tag when his deal voids following the 2013 season.

The New York Jets are ready to make Darrelle Revis the highest paid cornerback in the NFL — but they are unlikely to make him the league’s highest-paid defensive player, ESPN.com’s Rich Cimini reported Sunday.

    From Cimini’s report:

Unless new GM John Idzik has a different philosophy than the previous administration, the Jets won’t be willing to satisfy Revis’ demand to become the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL. Their stance, shared by many teams, is that cornerbacks aren’t worth as much as pass rushers. They’ll make him the highest-paid corner (he’s already close to it at $11.5 million per year), but it’s hard to imagine them going into the $16 million-a-year neighborhood — unless Idzik revamps the organization’s value system.

Revis’ name has popped up in trade rumors since the end of the season because he is expected to want a new, long-term contract that would make him the league’s highest-paid defensive player. Revis is looking for a contract that would outpace the deal the Bills gave defensive end Mario Williams last offseason. Williams signed a six-year deal worth $96 million, and $50 million of that is guaranteed. The Jets are already $19 million over next season’s salary cap.

Revis is only 27 years old. Before a season-ending ACL injury earlier this year, he was thought by many to be the top cornerback in the NFL. Before this season, Revis made four consecutive Pro Bowl appearances.

Cimini also speculated that if the 49ers lose in Sunday’s Super Bowl XLVII because of Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco’s passing proficiency, it could increase calls for the 49ers to make a move for Revis this offseason.

The New York Jets discussed trading cornerback Darrelle Revis even before his season-ending ACL injury this season, the New York Post’s Mark Cannizzaro reported on Sunday.

The idea of trading Revis has been floated recently after CBS’ Jason La Canfora reported that Jets owner Woody Johnson would “explore” a move. Revis is scheduled to make $6 million next season and is expected to want a new, long-term contract. Early estimations put the Jets already $19 million over the salary cap next season, making their long-term options limited with Revis.

But Cannizzaro’s report is a signal that the Jets were thinking all along about the possibility of trading him:

Two NFL sources told The Post yesterday the Jets were floating their interest around the league in trading Revis before he suffered his season-ending injury — a clear indication they have had no plans to sign him to the long-term contract he wants.

One source told The Post that, before the injury, more than one league general manager reached out to Revis’ agents to say the Jets were exploring their options for trading him.

Revis is only 27 years old and, before his injury, was thought by many to be the top cornerback in the NFL. Before this season, Revis made four consecutive Pro Bowl appearances.

The Post reported that Revis could seek a new contract that would make him the top-paid defensive player in the NFL. He is looking for a contract that would go “just north of” the deal the Bills gave defensive end Mario Williams last offseason. Williams signed a six-year deal worth $96 million, and $50 million of that is guaranteed.

New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis tweeted about reports that the Jets will explore trading him this offseason. CBSSports.com’s Jason La Canfora reported about the possibility on Wednesday.

After a press conference Thursday to introduce new general manager John Idzik, Jets owner Woody Johnson failed to deny the report. Head coach Rex Ryan declined to discuss the issue.

“I’m not going to get into any of those specifics right now. Let’s let the process run its course,” Ryan said (via USA TODAY). “I’m confident that any decision made by this organization without question will be in the best interest of the team.”

[BURKE: Darrelle Revis rumor speaks to Jets' dire situation]

Revis is recovering from a torn ACL. He played in only two games this season. He is due to make $6 million next season and is expected to soon start looking for a new long-term contract. The Jets are estimated to already be $19 million over the salary cap for next season, and trading Revis would help relieve some of that burden.

But to trade the star cornerback, New York would need a solid return. Revis is only 27 years old and, before his injury, was considered by many to be one of the best players in the game. He had made four straight Pro Bowls before this season.

The New York Jets will explore trade possibilities for All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis, reports CBSSports.com.

According to the report, Jets owner Woody Johnson has strong reservations about the team’s ability to extend Revis beyond the final year of his contract and wants to “attempt to land value for Revis now, rather than risk losing him” in free agency.

Revis missed most of the 2012 season because of an ACL tear in his left knee. His contract expires after the 2014 season but he is set to make $6 million next season.

Revis signed a seven-year deal then that voids to a four-year pact, thus making him an unrestricted free agent after the 2013 season.

Dealing Revis would incur a $9 million cap hit due to some option-bonus prorations involved in the contract — thus Revis would count an additional $3 million against the cap than he is currently scheduled to — but the Jets could navigate that relatively easily according to sources familiar with their cap situation, via a restructuring or by releasing a veteran.

Revis, a three-time first team All-Pro, said last month that he would like to remain with the team and should be fully healed by the time next season starts.

“I just think he has to just focus on football,” Revis said at the time. “Don’t get into the ‘he-said she-said,’ and listening to outsiders. It’s all about being focused and playing what you love.”

The New York Jets are missing arguably the best defender in the league, but according to Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie, he is the best corner in the NFL now that Darrelle Revis is hurt and might miss the entire season.

Cromartie spoke to the New York Post and gave some interesting answers when it came to his status as an elite defender.

When asked how many cornerbacks other than Revis were better than him?
    Cromartie answered, “None.”

Cromartie was asked if he was the second-best corner in the NFL?

    “Yup.”

    Asked again, he said.

    “Yup.”

When asked he is believed that that?

    “Yup.”

This season, Cromartie has nine tackles and one interception.

“My job is not to be like Revis,” Cromartie said. “My job is to be Antonio Cromartie. I’m supposed to be me. And I’m going to continue to be me. “I have said that I’m the second-best corner in the NFL. I’m not backing off what I said. I don’t care what anyone else believes… It’s my confidence in myself. I know what I’m capable of when I’m at the top of my game.”

New York Jets All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis is out for the season after tearing an ACL, coach Rex Ryan said at his Monday press conference.

CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora reported on Sunday night that the Jets “feared the worst for Revis after he left the game in pain following a non-contact knee injury during the Jets-Dolphins game.

“Obviously that’s a significant injury and it’s something that we’re going to have to overcome as a football team,” Ryan said. “For him I feel bad about it because he’s such a great player and a great teammate.”

  • Report: Darrelle Revis ‘probably’ tore ACL

    Decrease fontDecrease font
    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

UPDATE: Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis “probably” tore his ACL, Yahoo Sports’ Jason Cole reported via Twitter Sunday night. Cole cites a “Jets source” in his tweet.

Previously, CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora reported that the Jets were concerned that their star cornerback Revis tore his ACL on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.

Revis was carted off the field Sunday after suffering a non-contact injury to his left knee. Revis’ left knee looked like it buckled as he was bracing for the impact of a Dolphins’ player’s block.

Losing Revis, the four-time All-Pro and cornerstone of the team’s defense, would be a massive blow for the Jets. He has served as the Jets’ lockdown corner who is always dependable to shut down the opposing team’s best receiver, and the Jets would struggle to replace that with backups Antonio Cromartie and Kyle Wilson.

Revis missed the Jets’ game at Pittsburgh last week after suffering a “minor concussion” in the season-opener against Buffalo.

New York Jets cornerback Darelle Revis was cleared for contact by team doctors on Thursday morning and is expected to play Sunday in Miami against the Dolphins, according to Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com.

Revis reportedly went through a “light” practice on Wednesday before being cleared by the Jets’ medical staff. He had suffered a mild concussion in a Week 1 win against the Buffalo Bills when he attempted to tackle C.J. Spiller but was instead kicked in the head by teammate Bart Scott.

He said he wasn’t 100-percent in the days leading up to the Jets’ Week 2 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, and head coach Rex Ryan decided to sit him out for that game.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News was at the media session with Ryan, who confirmed that Revis will participate in full contact drills at Thursday’s practice.

The New York Jets said they wouldn’t wait until gameday to make a decision on the status of cornerback Darrelle Revis. The team wasn’t lying. Head Coach Rex Ryan announced today that Revis will be held out of this Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Revis was cleared for non-contact drills for the first time on Friday after suffering a concussion in last week’s win over the Buffalo Bills. However, the Jets didn’t feel that Revis could effectively contribute this weekend, and have added him to their injury list alongside tight end Dustin Keller and linebacker Bryan Thomas, who are both out with hamstring-related ailments.

The New York Jets won’t wait for cornerback Darrelle Revis to become a game-day decision.

The Pro Bowler sat out of practice for a second straight day after suffering a concussion during the Jets’ win over Buffalo on Sunday.

Head coach Rex Ryan said the Jets medical staff and an independent neurological consultant must approve Revis for practice or for Sunday’s game before the team takes flight for Pittsburgh on Saturday.

Ryan said he wouldn’t put a player suffering post-concussion symptoms on a plane and he would never put a player on the field before he was cleared.

“Clearly, I think by Saturday, we better know something, if he’s going or not,” Ryan said. “If a guy had a concussion, I don’t think you’d put him on a plane to make the game-time decision. I would think by Saturday that we’ll certainly have an answer.”

The Jets defense could find itself vulnerable to a Steelers’ passing attack — featuring speedy receivers Antonio Brown, Emmanuel Sanders and Mike Wallace — if Revis does not play.

New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis sat out most of the team’s practice Sunday morning with tightness in his right hamstring, The Star-Ledger‘s Jenny Vrentas reported. Revis later told reporters that it was not related to unhappiness with his contract situation, and Vrentas confirmed Revis’ statements with someone in the organization.

“Come on now. No, no it has nothing to do with that,” Revis said when asked if his injury is contract-related. “I’m here. If I wasn’t going to be here, I would have held out, so that’s not the case.”

The 27-year-old Revis reported to Jets training camp last week after saying last month that he wasn’t sure if he would hold out to revise the rework the four-year, $46 million deal he signed in 2010 after holding out. Upon arriving to camp, he told reporters that he was “close” to holding out.

Revis is scheduled to make $13.5 million total over the next two seasons. His 2010 contract was front-loaded and paid him $32.5 million in the first two years. But Revis said that both he and the Jets always viewed that front-loaded contract as a “band-aid” that could be revisited.

“Something’s got to happen sooner or later in terms of my future with the team,” Revis said last Thursday. “I want to be here, and I hope Mike and Mr. Woody (Johnson) want me here, but besides that, I’ve just got to play football and keep on playing the best I can.”

New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis considers himself to be the best cornerback in football.  He just wants to be paid like it and is looking forward to sitting down with members of the Jets organization, reports ESPN.com.

“Sooner or later it has to,” Revis said. “I’ve got two more years left, we’ll go from there.”

Revis signed a deal worth $46 million in 2010 and showed up during the first day of Jets’ three-day minicamp but hasn’t decided if he will hold out of training camp.

“I have grown,” Revis said, who gave no timetable for a sitdown with the Jets’ brass. “This is my sixth year, I’ve grown. (I’ve) been in a lot of situations, you guys got to remember, even when I was a rookie, my rookie contract I came in late. The second one, it was the same type of scenario. We’ll see.”

  • Darrelle Revis on New York Jets: “I want to retire here.”

Darrelle Revis, the New York Jets All-Pro cornerback said he wants to retire with the team and will honor his contract the best he can, though he won’t guarantee that he will be with the team when training camp begins in July, according to an interview he gave Thursday to Jenny Vrentas of the Star-Ledger:

“I want to retire here,” Revis said in an interview Thursday. “I think Mike (Tannenbaum) knows that. I think Rex (Ryan) knows that. (The Jets) drafted me, they gave me a chance, so yeah, I want to be here and never play for another organization again. If they feel that, if Mike feels that I’m that type of person to be here, then they will compensate me. If not, then it’s the business of it.

People think I’m mad or unhappy. I’m not mad or unhappy,” Revis said. “It’s a thing where some things were said, and I think that’s what people are really focusing on. It was a Band-Aid type of contract, and they were going to redo it or renew it, and it hasn’t happened yet.”

According to Vrentas, Revis was never angry over the contract he signed in 2010, which was initially a seven-year-deal but if he does not hold out this summer would become a four-year deal worth $46 million.

Under his current contract, he is paid on average $16.25 million as well as an additional $18 million bonus paid to him in 2011. For 2012 and 2013, his compensation is $13.5 million:

“I could come here every day and make a hassle, ‘I want to get paid,’ but if they don’t want to do that — if Mike doesn’t want to do that — then they don’t want to do that,” he said. “It might be that way. It might be they want to do it, but they’ve got to figure out the best situation to get it done.”

Vrentas also reported that Jets general manager Mike Tanenbaum said that Revis is still under contract and the team looks forward to accomplishing great things with him in 2012.

New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis received death threats when he held out from training camp in 2010, so he is confident he can handle any fallout from fans over another possible holdout this summer, he told the New York Daily News‘ Gary Myers.

“I don’t know if you looked at my Twitter,” he told Myers. “I was getting death threats and everything. I’m getting stuff now on Twitter.”

Pro Football Talk reported that Revis recently responded to one negative tweet from a fan by responding, “shut up”.

Revis ended his holdout in 2010 after getting a frontloaded four-year deal. He made $32.5 million over the first two years but is now scheduled to make only $13.5 million over the final two. He wants the deal renegotiated again and has said he is unsure if he will report to training camp on time.

Myers reports that as part of the contract, if Revis holds out again, the Jets can extend the deal for three more seasons at a reasonable cost. But if Revis finishes the contract, the team cannot use its franchise tag on him. He needs to weigh his options and decide his best plan of action. He does not seem worried about the Jets’ reaction.

“I’m a corporation, too,” he said.

  • Report: New York Jets’ Darrelle Revis may hold out of training camp again

    Decrease fontDecrease font
    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis is not sure whether he will hold out from training camp this summer, according to a tweet from New York Daily News beat writer Manish Mehta.

Revis held out two seasons ago and was rewarded with a frontloaded four-year deal. Pro Football Talk‘s Gregg Rosenthal reported when that holdout ended that Revis could hold out again before the 2012 season because, after earning a combined $32.5 million in 2010 and 2011, he would make $13.5 million combined in 2012 and 2013.

At the time, when asked about the possibility of another holdout, Revis told Sports Illustrated‘s Peter King, “If I continue to play ball like I usually do, we’ll probably be back at that same position we were this year.”

After bringing in Tim Tebow this offseason, Jets’ training camp will get plenty of attention. Revis adds another story to watch.
