  • Latest FA charge could lengthen Eden Hazard’s ‘ball boy’ ban

The Football Association has charged Chelsea’s Eden Hazard with violent conduct following his controversial incident with a Swansea City ball boy in the waning minutes of Wednesday’s League Cup semi-final.

Hazard was red carded for attempting to kick the ball free from underneath 17-year-old Swansea ball boy Charlie Morgan.

The Belgium star’s three-match suspension could be extended by the FA’s latest charge. A commission independent of the FA and Chelsea will rule on the length of the ban next week. Hazard has until 6 p.m. Tuesday to respond to the charge.

It is alleged that Hazard’s behaviour in relation to a Swansea City ball boy, for which the player was dismissed in the 78th minute, constituted violent conduct whereby the standard punishment that would otherwise apply was clearly insufficient.

The FA also addressed the ball boy’s actions that many believe were his attempt to stall as Swansea City attempted to hold on to an upset win.

The FA will remind all clubs of their responsibilities in ensuring ball boys and other personnel around the pitch act in an appropriate manner at all times and will liaise with competitions accordingly.

Chelsea attacker Eden Hazard was red carded for attempting to kick the ball free from underneath a Swansea ball boy late in a League Cup semifinal loss Wednesday.

Yahoo Sports! reports when Hazard, a two-time French league player of the year, attempted to retrieve the ball for a goal kick:

. . . the 17-year-old ball boy had other ideas, and tried to deliberately keep Hazard from getting to it by falling on top of the ball. So, after a bit of a struggle, Hazard tried to kick the ball free, prompting the teenager to finally roll off it.

According to BBC Sport, Chelsea boss Rafael Benitez said Hazard and the ball boy apologized to each other after the match.

“The both recognize there was a mistake. The boy was apologizing for time wasting. Hazard was frustrated and tried to get the ball. He was kicking the ball and getting the ball.

“We can analyze if for half an hour but we know that both are wrong.”

Striker Didier Drogba, who scored the winning goal in Saturday’s Champions League final, is leaving Chelsea, the soccer star confirmed Tuesday on the team’s website.

“It has been a very difficult decision for me to make and I am very proud of what we have achieved,” Drogba told the site, “but the time is right for a new challenge for me.”

Reports leaked out Monday that Drogba had already told his teammates he would be leaving the team when his contract ended in June.

Drogba joined Chelsea in 2004. He leaves the club after scoring the winning goal during a penalty shootout against Bayern Munich on Saturday. The 34-year-old scored 157 goals in 341 appearances with the team.
