New York Jets awarded wide receiver Braylon Edwards off waivers

After reports on Monday suggested that the Jets could bring back wide receiver Braylon Edwards, the team made it official on Tuesday.

The Jets announced that they were awarded Edwards on waivers just one week after he called the people “calling the shots” in the organization “idiots.”

At 6-7, the team sits one game back of the final playoff spot in the AFC and is desperate for receiver help after Stephen Hill on Sunday became the third Jet receiver to go down with an injury.

This season, Edwards has caught 18 passes for 74 yards and one touchdown while playing for the Seahawks, who waived him the day of his controversial tweets. He posted 904 yards and seven touchdowns for the Jets two seasons ago while playing with Mark Sanchez, the struggling quarterback who Edwards called “a beast” last week.

Edwards expressed his excitement for the move on Twitter.

Not even a week has passed since Braylon Edwards called the Jets’ higher-ups “idiots,” but the organization is reportedly considering bringing back the embattled wide receiver to boost a depleted receiving corps.

ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter reported that the Jets will contemplate the move after the Seattle Seahawks waived him from injured reserve on Monday. The Jets would either claim him off waivers or sign him if he passes through, Schefter reported.

Rookie wide receiver Stephen Hill was the latest Jet receiver to be stricken with the injury bug on Sunday, when he had to leave the team’s win over the Jacksonville Jaguars with a knee injury. The Jets also lost star wideout Santonio Holmes and Clyde Gates.

Meanwhile, the Jets suddenly find themselves in the midst of an unexpected shot at a playoff berth. At 6-7, they sit only one game back of both the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals for the sixth and final AFC playoff spot.

This makes the addition of another wideout to complement Chaz Schilens and Jeremy Kerley even more imperative. But the pursuit of Edwards comes less than a week after he defended Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez on Twitter:

Edwards subsequently apologized less than 12 hours later:

Edwards has caught only eight passes for 74 yards and a touchdown with Seattle this season.

Quarterback Mark Sanchez has come under fire in New York for failing to live up to expectations with the 5-7 Jets, most  recently during a 97-yard, three-interception performance against the Cardinals. Sanchez was replaced by Greg McElroy in Sunday’s third quarter, and McElroy, a seventh-round pick in 2011, led the team to a 7-6 victory.

But former Jets receiver Braylon Edwards tweeted on Tuesday that Sanchez should not be blamed for the team’s struggles. Instead, Edwards, currently with the Seahawks, took an apparent shot at the Jets’ front office:

The tweet could be a reference to head coach Rex Ryan, general manager Mike Tannenbaum or owner Woody Johnson, as ProFootballTalk noted.

Hours later, Edwards, who played with Sanchez in 2009-10 and 2010-11, issued the following apology for the comments:

He was waived soon after, the Chicago Tribune‘s Brad Briggs reported.

The Jets are reportedly conflicted on which quarterback to start this week. Sources told The Star-Ledger‘s Conor Orr that a decision would be made no later than early Wednesday.

Wide receiver Braylon Edwards will sign with the Seattle Seahawks, reports Dave Mahler of KJR Sports Radio in Seattle (via ProFootballTalk’s Evan Silva).

Edwards had reportedly worked out for the Miami Dolphins last week.

The 29-year-old receiver has had a mostly solid career, but he hasn’t been the superstar the Cleveland Browns hoped for when they took him with the No. 3 pick in the 2005 NFL Draft.

Edwards has had one standout season: In 2007, he made the Pro Bowl after catching 80 passes for 1,269 yards and 16 touchdowns.

He hasn’t reached 1,000 yards receiving in any other year. In 2010, with the Jets, he caught seven touchdowns, and it looked like he may have a chance to again establish himself as a solid contributor.

But last season, Edwards battled injuries in his first season with the 49ers and was released in December. He had undergone knee surgery and struggled to get in rhythm with the team’s offense. He caught 15 passes for 181 yards in nine games with the team.

According to Evan Silva of ProFootballTalk, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on “NFL Live” tonight that the Cincinnati Bengals have expressed interest in free-agent wide receiver Braylon Edwards.

Edwards, 29, has been on the open market since the San Francisco 49ers released him on Dec. 27. He had a miserable first season in San Fran, recording just 15 receptions in nine games.

Edwards was rehabbing knee and shoulder injuries toward the end of last season and continuing into the offseason; his health concerns have considerably limited his value on the open market.

It was reported weeks ago that the New York Jets also had interest in Edwards, who played for the Jets previously between 2008 and ’10.

The New York Jets are interested in bringing back free agent wide receiver Braylon Edwards, according to the New York Daily News.

“He had two outstanding seasons for us,” Jets coach Rex Ryan said last month. “He was an outstanding blocker.”

Edwards, 29, signed a one-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers before the 2011 season.  With the 49ers, Edwards’ playing time was limited due to multiple injuries.  He was then waived before Week 17.  With soon-to-be free agent wide receiver Plaxico Burress and the Jets likely to part ways, the club has expressed their interest in replacing him with Edwards.

Despite his off-the-field issues, Edwards was a productive player for the Jets in his two seasons.  In 2010, Edwards led the Jets with 904 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.

Wide receiver Braylon Edwards announced today via Twitter that he had been released by the San Francisco 49ers.

He also released a longer statement on his official website:

“I wish the 49ers organization the best of luck during the Playoffs. I will be working hard this off season to strengthen my knee and prepare for the 2012 season. Thanks for your continued support and for being such loyal fans.”

Edwards had managed to record just 15 receptions in nine games with the 49ers this year. Last season he tallied 53 receptions and seven touchdowns for the New York Jets.

Earlier this winter, Edwards made headlines when he gave out 79 $10,000 college scholarships to Cleveland area students who fulfilled a promise to graduate high school. Edwards had made the pledge to students that he would help pay for their education when he was a rookie with the Cleveland Browns.
