Eagles deny report they will release Nnamdi Asomugha today [UPDATED]

[Update: 11:07 a.m. EST] FOX 29′s Howard Eskin, who originally reported the story, has now retracted his report in a tweet.

[Update: 10:54 a.m. EST]: The Eagles are denying the report that they will release cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha today, reports The Philadelphia Inquirer‘s Jeff McLane.

Multiple other local and national reporters have also tweeted that Asomugha will not be released today.

Earlier:

The Philadelphia Eagles will release cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha today, reports Howard Eskin of Philadelphia’s FOX 29.

There had been reports in recent weeks that Asomugha would be released unless he restructured his contract.

Asomugha was the top free agent on the market when Philadelphia signed him to a five-year, $60 million contract in 2011. He was coming off three straight Pro Bowls with the Raiders and was considered one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL.

But he never lived up to his contract with Philadelphia. The team also struggled — going 8-8 and 4-12 the past two seasons — and coach Andy Reid was fired.

In late February, a report leaked that Asomugha ate lunch in his car rather than with his teammates last season. New Philadelphia coach Chip Kelly called Asomugha an “outstanding” person last week, but the cornerback is still apparently on his way out.

The San Francisco 49ers will trade Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs, reports Jay Glazer on Twitter.

The San Jose Mercury News‘ Tim Kawakami reports San Francisco will receive Kansas City’s second-round pick this year (34th overall) and “a similar pick” in 2014. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the 2014 pick will be a “conditional mid-round” selection.

Smith was having the best season of his career before an injury knocked him out of the lineup in November. Colin Kaepernick took over and led San Francisco to the Super Bowl. With a weak draft class and few other potential starters available, Smith was one of the top targets for teams looking to upgrade at quarterback.

CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora reported Sunday that the 49ers had a deal for Smith “effectively completed.” But the other team was not known at the time.

Most of the speculation pointed to the Chiefs, who struggled at quarterback last season. Matt Cassel and Brady Quinn split the job and combined to throw 20 interceptions and only eight touchdowns. The Chiefs hired former Eagles coach Andy Reid in the offseason, and improving at quarterback was expected to be among his top priorities.

Kansas City owns the top pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, normally a spot where teams find a quarterback. But this year’s class — headlined by prospects like West Virginia’s Geno Smith and USC’s Matt Barkley — lacks a clear answer at the position so early in the first round.

Smith provides a solid, experienced solution for the Chiefs. He has started 75 games in his career and led San Francisco to the NFC Championship in 2012. In nine starts last season, Smith completed 70.2 percent of his passes and threw 13 touchdowns. The game before his injury, on Monday Night Football against Arizona, he completed 18 of 19 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns.

The Kansas City Chiefs have “made it clear” that they want to keep wide receiver Dwayne Bowe, and the two sides are in discussions about a new contract, NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reported on Thursday.

Bowe will be a free agent this offseason. The Chiefs used their franchise tag on him last offseason, under which he received $9.5 million in the one-year contract. Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio reported that if the Chiefs used the franchise tag for a second straight season — something they haven’t yet indicated they would be willing to do — Bowe would get a one-year, $11.4 million guaranteed contract.

The Chiefs’ apparent urgency in contract talks signals a shift in the new leadership of head coach Andy Reid and general manager John Dorsey. Previous general manager Scott Pioli was not sold on giving Bowe, 28, a long-term contract.

Bowe caught 59 passes last season for 801 yards, a 13.6-yard average per catch. He also had three touchdowns. He was lost for the season after breaking his ribs during a 30-7 loss to the Cleveland Browns in December.

USA Today reported on Thursday that the Chiefs are interested in potentially pairing Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles with Bowe.

The re-signing of Michael Vick on Monday and signing of Dennis Dixon on Thursday has made the Eagles’ quarterback situation a bit crowded under new head coach Chip Kelly. According to a USA Today report, the Chiefs would be interested in taking Nick Foles off the Eagles’ hands.

Foles passed for 1,699 yards, six touchdowns and threw five interceptions in seven games during his rookie season for then-Eagles coach Andy Reid, who has since been fired and hired by the Chiefs. He does not possess the running abilities of Vick and Dixon in a new Eagles offense that could mimic Kelly’s dual-threat duties at Oregon.

The Eagles reportedly have not informed the Chiefs that Foles is available after Kelly said he would compete with Vick for the starting quarterback job.

Reid and his new offensive coordinator Doug Pedersen inherit a disheveled Chiefs quarterback corps that includes Matt Cassel, who may be cut after being benched midway through 2012, Brady Quinn, Ricky Stanzi and Alex Tanney.

The Kansas City Chiefs Public Relations released the names of 10 new additions to the coaching staff.

Nine out of the ten new hires have some previous affiliation or employment with the Eagles, most as recently as the 2012 season. Britt Reid (Quality Control) is newly hired head coach Andy Reid’s son. The only non-Eagles affiliated hire is Eric Bieniemy, who most recently spent two years as the offensive coordinator/running backs coach at the University of Colorado.

Head coach Andy Reid naturally had good things to say about the new staff, considering how closely he has worked with most of them.

“I’m pleased we were able to get all of these coaches on board. I have relationships with each of them, and I know their past experiences, work ethics and coaching styles. These are high-character coaches, and each one brings something different to the table for us.”

The Kansas City Chiefs have reached an agreement with Andy Reid to become the team’s next head coach, pending legal review, according to Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen of ESPN.com.

The news follows Friday morning reports of the Chiefs parting ways with general manager Scott Pioli.

The Chiefs moved quickly to be the first team to interview Reid shortly after he was fired by the Philadelphia Eagles on Dec. 30 after 14 years with the team. The Cardinals and Chargers reportedly were also interested in Reid, but did not have the opportunity to interview him.

Reid is expected to have extensive power over the Chiefs’ football operations, and reportedly has already reached out to fired Eagles defensive coordinator Juan Castillo, and has been rumored to have interest in bringing in a general manager or director of personnel. He has previously worked with fired Cleveland Browns general manager Tom Heckert and Green Bay Packers director of operations John Dorsey.

Scott Pioli is out as the Kansas City Chiefs general manager according to ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter.

The move likely precedes the hiring of head coach Andy Reid and the addition of new front-office personnel who have experience working with Reid including recently fired Browns general manager Tom Heckert and/or Packers director of operations John Dorsey.

Reid, who was fired by the Eagles after leading them to the playoffs nine times in 14 seasons, reportedly cancelled interviews with the Cardinals and Chargers.

The Chiefs hired Pioli as general manager in 2009 after eight years as vice-president/player personnel for the Patriots. He was a five-time winner of the NFL Executive of the Year award while helping when the Patriots win three Super Bowls and four AFC championships.

A deal between former Eagles coach Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs is imminent, according to USA Today.

Reid was scheduled to meet with the Chargers and Cardinals after the Chiefs but has reportedly cancelled those talks.

The Chiefs have yet to confirm anything and declined to comment when asked about Reid joining the team.

Reid, 54, coached the Eagles for 14 years (1999-2012) and led the team to an NFC Championship in 2004. The team went 130-93 (.583) under Reid. He was fired on Dec. 31 after the Eagles’ 4-12 finish in 2012, the same day Chiefs head coach Ken Whisenhunt was fired. There have been reports that Reid could bring Tom Heckert, the Eagles’ former general manager, with him.

The Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly close to making Andy Reid their next head coach. The major issues that once existed between the two sides have been discussed and agreed upon, according to a report Thursday morning from Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen of ESPN.

Reid, who had become the longest tenured coach in the NFL during his 14 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, was scheduled to meet the Arizona Cardinals today. Despite reports that the Cardinals were close to a deal, it now appears that the Chiefs are the frontrunners.

Officials from the Chiefs and Reid spent Wednesday at a private airport in the Philadelphia area discussing the terms of Reid’s potential deal. According to the report, the Chiefs are willing to give him more control in shaping the team and its personnel than what the Cardinals are expected to offer him. He was supposed to fly to Arizona after the meeting to meet with Cardinals officials on Thursday, but according to Schefter, Reid did not get on the flight.

Team officials can interview coaches of playoffs teams but offers or even contract negotiations must wait until those playoffs teams have been eliminated.

Former Eagles head coach Andy Reid will meet with officials from the Chiefs on Wednesday in Philadelphia to discuss Kansas City’s recently vacated head coaching position, and then he will fly to Arizona that night to interview with the Cardinals on Thursday, according to a report from ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.

The Chiefs parted ways with head coach Romeo Crennel on Monday. Team officials were in Atlanta on Tuesday to meet with Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter before heading to Philadelphia for a discussion with Reid. Falcons officials later confirmed that Koetter will not seek a head coaching position during this offseason.

Reid was fired on Monday by the Eagles after 14 seasons. He had been the longest tenured coach in the NFL at the time. He is putting together a new coaching staff this week and is hopeful to have reached a decision with a new team by the end of the week.

Arizona fired coach Ken Whisenhunt on Monday and team officials are open to hiring in-house to replace him; team president Michael Bidwill interviewed Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton for the position on Tuesday but will also meet with Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy over the weekend in Denver to discuss the head coaching position.

  • Report: Arizona Cardinals ‘very close’ to hiring Andy Reid as head coach

    Decrease fontDecrease font
    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

The Arizona Cardinals are “very close” to a deal with ex-Eagles coach Andy Reid to make him the team’s next head coach, Tim Ring of KTVK-TV in Arizona is reporting.

Both Reid and Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt were fired on Monday. Reid went 129-88-1 in 14 seasons in Philadelphia, leading the Eagles to five NFC Championship games and one Super Bowl, while Whisenhunt compiled a 45-51 record in six seasons and also led the Cardinals to a Super Bowl loss.

Both teams lost 11 of their last 12 games this season, with the Eagles finishing at 4-12 and the Cardinals at 5-11.

The move would reunite Reid with quarterback Kevin Kolb, who he drafted in the second round in 2007 before trading him in 2011. Kolb has struggled in his two seasons in Arizona, playing just 15 games due to benchings and injuries.

According to Kenny Roda of ESPN 850 in Cleveland, Reid could also reunite with Tom Heckert, who served several roles in the Eagles front office from 2001-09 before becoming the Browns’ general manager in 2010. Heckert was also fired on Monday.

The Cardinals are reportedly interviewing defensive coordinator Ray Horton for the position today, according to ProFootballTalk:

The Cardinals are believed to be interviewing their own defensive coordinator, Ray Horton, today. Horton is a minority, so that interview would satisfy the requirements of the Rooney Rule and leave the Cardinals free to make their hire. If they’re only interviewing Horton for that reason, then the Cardinals are violating the spirit of the Rooney Rule, but they wouldn’t be violating the letter of the rule and would therefore be in the clear with the league office.

A league source told ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter that the Reid-to-the-Cardinals move has a 95 percent chance of happening:

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick had a few choice words for his teammates following the firing of head coach Andy Reid. Vick, who missed a number of games this season because of a concussion and rib injuries, lambasted the players for their lack of effort and said that it’s frustrating to play with a bunch of guys who don’t try to improve themselves week after week.

The comments come at a particularly raw time for the Eagles; Reid was let go on New Years Eve after 14 years with the team, the longest tenured coach in the league at the time, and the Eagles as a team are coming off yet another disappointing season in which a three game losing streak brought an end to their 4-12 season.

More changes could be coming to the team and Vick’s latest comments give more reason to believe that he will be playing elsewhere next season, according to John Gonzalez of CSNPhilly.com:

“It’s all about focus, dedication and commitment. Until you get guys who are willing to better themselves week in and week out and want to win, you’re not going to win. And I haven’t played with guys like that. It’s unfortunate for Coach things turned out the way they are. It could have been a lot better. This locker room could have dictated that.”

When asked by a reporter if the lack of effort “pisses [him] off,” Vick said it does and that he expects the same 110 percent effort from his teammates.

“Yes it does. I give 110 percent effort. My body is scarred up all year. I’m hurt, I’m bruised, get up after every hit and still try and fight and push. I do that for my coaches. I do that for my teammates. And I would expect the same thing in return.”

He didn’t name names and didn’t quite throw everybody under the bus, adding that there are some guys in the locker room who give it their all, but for a team to be successful, he said there needs to be that commitment from everybody and he didn’t get the sense that each and every one of his teammates were dedicated this past season:

“[T]here are guys in here that gave it their all. But you need consistent effort from every guy in this locker room.”

The Eagles announced the end of Andy Reid’s 14-year head coaching tenure on Monday morning.

Reid’s departure was predicted after the high-priced Eagles team many considered to be an NFC title contender stumbled to a 4-12 record.

Reid immediately helped the Eagles turn the franchise around upon his arrival in 1999, coaching the team to the playoffs in 2000, the first of nine postseason berths. He owns the franchise record of 140 victories, which also ranks him 22nd among NFL coach all-time.

“Andy Reid won the most games of any head coach in Eagles history and he is someone I respect greatly and will remain friends with for many years to come,” said owner Jeffrey Lurie. “But, it is time for the Eagles to move in a new direction. Coach Reid leaves us with a winning tradition that we can build upon. And we are very excited about the future.”

“The search for the new coach of the Philadelphia Eagles will begin immediately,” said Lurie.

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid will be fired on Monday morning ending his 14-year tenure with the team, reports the Delaware County Daily Times.

Reid, a three-time NFL Coach of the Year, still has one year left on his contract that pays him more than $6 million a year. The report says it is not known if the team and Reid will reach a financial settlement.

The Eagles were beaten 42-7 by the New York Giants in the team’s season finale on Sunday, finishing 4-12 and missing the playoffs for the second straight season.

Reid, 54, led the Eagles to nine playoff appearances, seven division titles, five NFC title game appearances and a Super Bowl berth.

“Either way, I understand. If I’m here again, I’ll love every minute of it. If I’m not, I’ll understand that too,” Reid said after the game.

Owner Jeff Lurie hinted prior to the start of the season that a repeat of the 8-8 finish Reid’s Eagles had in 2011 wouldn’t be good enough for him to finish out his current contract, speculation that Reid would go has been rampant for months.

Reid had a 130-93-1 regular season record with the team, and is the winningest and losingest coach in the history of the franchise. He was also 10-9 in the postseason.

This time of the year, NFL executives around the league prepare for “Black Monday”, the annual day after the NFL regular season ends when dozens of coaches will receive their walking papers.

Although he has not been fired yet, Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid is reportedly interested in the San Diego Chargers job, according to CBSSports.com.  There is only one problem with that: San Diego hasn’t fired their coach Norv Turner yet either.

Reid made it clear yesterday that if he is fired, he doesn’t want to take time off and wants to coach immediately.

Last month, CBSSports.com’s Jason La Canfora reported on Reid’s interest in the Chargers job.

“The Chargers have been near the top of their division for years and have a former Pro Bowl quarterback in his prime in Philip Rivers,” La Canfora wrote. “Reid is a native of Southern California, has a gorgeous home on the beach in the San Diego area and is known to love the area. Plus, as some close to him note, the media and fan climate in San Diego is vastly different from the cauldron that he has worked in.”

Reid has complied 130-92 in 14 seasons as the Eagles head coach, taking the team to five NFC championship games and one Super Bowl appearance.

If, as expected, the Philadelphia Eagles let go of head coach Andy Reid at the end of the season, they are expected to make a hard push to land Oregon head coach Chip Kelly to replace Reid.

CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora reported Sunday that the Eagles are expected to target Kelly quickly, and that he could soon become the favorite for the position. La Canfora reported that Kelly is “expected to make the jump” from Oregon to the NFL because of possible sanctions that could be coming to the university’s football program.

The NCAA investigated Oregon after questions about a 2010 payment of $25,000 to Willie Lyles and his Houston-based recruiting service. Lyles was involved with a player from Texas who committed to Oregon.

Kelly flirted with the possibility of becoming the Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach after last season, but he ultimately backed out after almost agreeing to a deal, saying he had “unfinished business to complete” at Oregon. The Ducks will finish out their season Jan. 3 in the Fiesta Bowl against Kansas State.

The 49-year-old Kelly is considered one of the brightest offensive minds in college football. In four seasons as Oregon’s head coach, he has a record of 45-7. He has led the Ducks to four consecutive BCS bowl games, including the 2010 BCS National Championship game.

Eagles coach Andy Reid could be a candidate for the Cowboys’ head job after the season, according to a new report. (Jeff Zelevansky/Getty Images)

In a report that coincides with the Philadelphia Eagles’ trip to take on the Dallas Cowboys Sunday night, a source close to head coach Andy Reid told The Trenton Times’ Mark Eckel that Reid could be the Cowboys’ coach next season. Of course, both Reid and current Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett would have to be fired before that could even happen.

    From Eckel’s report:

According to an extremely reliable source, who is close to Reid, the long-time Eagles head coach could be the head coach of the archrival Cowboys next year. [...]

“I know a lot of people think Andy is going to San Diego next year, and I can see that happening,” the source said. “But I keep hearing Dallas. I think he can end up with the Cowboys. As a matter of fact, I think he will end up with the Cowboys, if Jason is fired.”

The embattled Reid has endured the worst season of his coaching career with the Eagles in 2012, and he was asked if he was thinking about resigning after a 31-6 drubbing against Washington on Nov. 18. After a 3-1 start to the season, the Eagles have lost seven straight games

Though Dallas has also limped to a disappointing 5-6 record this season, Garrett’s fate is less certain. Another name that has been thrown around for the Cowboys opening is Sean Payton, who was suspended this season for his role in the Saints’ bounty scandal. He will be a coaching free agent after the season.

The Philadelphia Eagles’ will be without wide receiver DeSean Jackson for the rest of the season. Head coach Andy Reid confirmed in a press conference Tuesday that the wide receiver will need six weeks to recover from fractured ribs, an injury he sustained in a 30-22 loss on Monday night against the Carolina Panthers.

Reid, who is widely believed to be on his way out of Philadelphia since taking over as head coach in 1999, said that despite all of the injuries, there’s no excuse for their forgettable 3-8 record:

“Injuries are not an excuse for our record. The next guy plays. There are no excuses. Hopefully you have the character on the team where guys will fight to the end. You saw that last night. We’re just not getting it done.”

The loss is no doubt a blow to an Eagles team that has seen its share of adversity this season, including Reid’s own son being found dead at training camp in August in what was reported in October as a heroin overdose.

Jackson leads the team with 45 catches on 700 yards. Reid also said that quarterback Michael Vick has not been cleared by doctors to play after suffering a concussion and that left tackle Jason Peters is definitely out for the remainder of the season. Peters’ replacement, King Dunlap, is not expected back at practice any time soon as he continues to rehab an MCL sprain. Reid added that LeSean McCoy is still in the early stages of post-concussion recovery.

Jon Gruden is eager to return to coaching and could be the next head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles if they continue to falter this season, according to a report from the local Fox affiliate in Philadelphia.

Gruden, a one-time Eagles offensive coordinator, could be the team’s main man if the organization decides to fire Andy Reid.

    From Fox29′s Howard Eskin:

“He enjoys working Monday Night Football in the ESPN Monday Night booth, but he is a coach and has the itch. I’m told he wants to go to a team that can win and the key has a quarterback.”

So, Eskin said that puts two teams in the mix, the San Diego Chargers, where Gruden is tight with general manager A.J. Smith, and they have a good quarterback with Phillip Rivers.

“And the Eagles are also a good fit for the Gruden requirements,” Eskin said. “He loves Philadelphia, thinks the Eagles will be a good team next year, and the key here: He likes the backup quarterback, Nick Foles, who he has already worked out while working for ESPN.”

Both Reid and quarterback Michael Vick have come under fire as the Eagles have limped to a 3-5 start to the season. They have lost their last four games, including a 28-13 drubbing against the New Orleans Saints on Monday night.

Gruden hasn’t been on the sidelines since the Tampa Bay Buccaneers fired him in 2008 after seven seasons with the organization. He is currently a Monday Night Football analyst at ESPN, and he has said he is happy in his current job.

Michael Vick acknowledged Sunday that head coach Andy Reid was thinking about making a switch at quarterback. (Joe Sargent/Getty Images)

After a home loss to the Atlanta Falcons dropped the Philadelphia Eagles below .500, quarterback Michael Vick said he realized that head coach Andy Reid was evaluating a potential change in starting quarterbacks.

“Obviously, he’s thinking about making a change at the quarterback position,” Vick said of Reid, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. “The thing I do know, and I’ll go watch the film and I’ll evaluate myself, is that I’m giving us every opportunity to win. I’m trying my hardest. Something don’t go right when I want them to. Some things do. If that’s a decision that coach wants to make, then I support it.”

Vick completed 21 of 35 pass attempts on Sunday for 191 yards and a touchdown, as the Eagles fell 30-17 to the Falcons at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. He was hardly the main problem, as the Falcons piled up nearly 400 yards of offense against the Eagles’ defense.

All the way back to late September, though, Reid was noncommittal on his support of Vick as the team’s starter.

“Right now, we’re with Michael and that’s what we’re doing,” Reid said after the Eagles’ 27-6 loss at Arizona, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. “We’ll evaluate it as we go.”

But as the Eagles have lost three of their last four games, speculation has centered on whether Reid would remove Vick for backup rookie Nick Foles.

“It’s tough when you know everything is in the balance, but that’s the decision that coach is thinking about making, and I’m going to fight until he says, ‘Come on out,’ and he takes me out of the game,” Vick said Sunday.

  • Michael Vick to remain Eagles’ starting quarterback, according to report

Michael Vick will keep his job as the Philadelphia Eagles’ starting quarterback — for now.

The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Jeff McLane reported Thursday night that Vick will remain as the starting quarterback following the team’s bye week. Also, McLane reported that offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg will stay put as the team’s play-caller.

For now, it appears that Eagles head coach Andy Reid will spare his offensive stalwarts the same fate as defensive coordinator Juan Castillo, who was fired this week.

But frustration with Vick among the Eagles fan base has continued to build as he struggles through a season plagued by turnovers and key missteps. Vick sits behind only Dallas Cowboys’ starter Tony Romo in the NFC with eight interceptions already this season. And Vick has also lost three fumbles.

Mornhinweg’s offense, meanwhile, is 31st in the NFL in scoring. The Eagles sit at 3-3 heading into a highly anticipated home matchup with the Atlanta Falcons next Sunday.

The Philadelphia Eagles’ hard-fought win against the New York Giants in Week 4 didn’t come without a few injuries. Michael Vick, LeSean McCoy and Nnamdi Asomugha each suffered an injury but they practiced on Wednesday and are ready to go for Sunday’s game in Pittsburgh against the Steelers, according to NBCSports.

Vick had suffered a late game knee contusion in their win against the Giants and his status prior to Wednesday was uncertain for the Steelers game, as Vick said he simply hoped to be able to play in that game. Head Coach Andy Reid reportedly didn’t seem worried about the injury, as Vick practiced with the team on Wednesday and is expected to play against the Steelers. Following their win against the Giants, Reid confirmed that McCoy had tweaked his knee but it appears that he’s fine now that he’s back at practice. Asomugha was poked in the eye but he is also expected to play against the Steelers.

The Eagles might also see the return of King Dunlap, the teams left tackle who suffered a hamstring injury in a Week 2 win against the Baltimore Ravens. Reid said that although Dunlap is now healthy enough to play, he might still keep Demetress Bell in the starting lineup, according to a report on Wednesday from Jeff McClane of The Philadelphia Inquirer:

“I’ll cross that bridge when we get there,” Reid said before practice. “But I’m  glad to have King back. I just want to see how he’s doing.”

  • Andy Reid: Michael Vick is starter ‘right now,’ but ‘we’ll evaluate it as we go’

Andy Reid offered a non-committal response when asked Monday if he would think about changing starting quarterbacks, giving a half-hearted endorsement of starter Michael Vick.

“Right now, we’re with Michael and that’s what we’re doing,” Reid said Monday after the Eagles’ 27-6 loss at Arizona, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. “We’ll evaluate it as we go.”

Vick has struggled this season despite the Eagles’ 2-1 start, completing 55 percent of his passes while throwing six interceptions (which leads the NFL) to just three touchdowns. He has a quarterback rating of 66.3, well below his career rating. Nick Foles, a rookie out of Arizona, is currently listed as the backup on the Eagles depth chart.

Later on his radio show, Reid later tried to clear up his earlier response, saying that Vick was the team’s starter, “period.”

“Michael’s our quarterback, period. Michael’s our quarterback,” Reid said. “Listen: Does he need to get better, and do we all need to get better? Yes, and we’re going to do that. So that’s what we’re going to work on starting Wednesday.”

  • Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie: “An 8-8 record would not be good enough for Andy Reid to return”

Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffery Lurie spoke on Thursday about the state of his team and what he expected from his talented, though underachieving squad and coach Andy Reid.

“An 8-8 record would not be good enough for Andy Reid to return. This team has all the ingredients to get to the Super Bowl,” Lurie said, according to Philly.com. “But it takes one bad game to end it. I expect a substantially improved team.”

Reid is entering his 14th season as the Eagles coach and has only had a .500 record or below on four times. Lurie said that he expectations where the same as last offseason and feels that his team is better than its record last season.

Lurie, who is divorcing his wife, said there is no change about who is in control of the Eagles and that he has complete control on all final decisions.

The first half of tonight’s Philadelphia Eagles-New England Patriots preseason game included some fireworks on the sideline. Eagles coach Andy Reid was seen arguing with defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins in the second quarter.

    Philly.com’s Jeff McLane reports:

The argument was caught by ESPN cameras. Reid said something to Jenkins and the defensive tackle appeared to say something in return to his head coach. Defensive line coach Jim Washburn then stepped in between the two. Reid then yelled at Washburn.

The Eagles had just allowed the Patriots to score a touchdown after they went 80 yards in 13 plays. A Ryan Mallett 7-yard TD pass to tight end Alex Silvestro ended the drive.

Cameras later caught Reid calling Jenkins over for a seemingly calm conversation.

Newly retired NFL star Brian Dawkins has also been known as a hard hitter on the field. If he keeps up the hard-hitting criticism of the Philadelphia Eagles, he may be in an analyst chair pretty soon too.

Dawkins spoke to NFL Network’s Rich Eisen on his podcast and when asked should his former coach Andy Reid be on the hot seat, Dawkins didn’t pull any punches.

“Yes, here’s the thing,” Dawkins said. “When you go out and you get some of the pieces that they got, that’s telling the fan base something. Even coming into this year … some of the things they’re doing this offseason, that’s telling the fan base something.”

“If there was a chance for this team to go far, it should be this year. You should know your team, you should know who can do what,” Dawkins said.

Dawkins played 13 seasons in Philadelphia, was a nine-time Pro Bowl selection and was named to the NFL 2000′s All-Decade Team before retiring in April.

  • Andy Reid Will Return To Coach The Eagles In 2012

    Decrease fontDecrease font
    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie announced today that longtime head coach Andy Reid will return for the 2012 season, according to ESPN.

“I’m here because it’s been a very, very unusual season … This was without question the most disappointing season in my tenure,” Lurie said, according to ESPN. After all the moves we made in the offseason and with our roster, it’s extremely disappointing and unacceptable to have the season over.”

The Eagles were considered by many to be the favorite in the NFC East this season after making several major acquisitions to build around star quarterback Michael Vick. However, a mix of injuries and poor play left the Eagles on the outside looking in of the playoffs in 2011 with an 8-8 record.

Philadelphia began the season in a 1-4 hole which they would not be able to dig themselves out of. Despite a late season surge, where the club won each of their final four games in convincing fashion, it wasn’t enough to take the squad dubbed “The Dream Team,” to the playoffs.

Reid, 53, has served as the head coach for the Eagles for the past 13 seasons. In total he has posted a 126-81-1 record including a 10-9 postseason record. In 2004 he helped the Eagles reach the Super Bowl, however they ultimately lost to the New England Patriots.
