The Cincinnati Bengals  have officially tagged Michael Johnson, one of the top defensive ends slated to hit the free market. Unless Johnson gets a new contract that supersedes the tag, Johnson will make $11.2 million in 2013. The sides have until mid-July to work out a long-term deal.

With the tag on Johnson, the Bengals will have time to work out a multi-year deal with right tackle  Andre Smith. Even with Johnson tagged, the Bengals have more than $40 million in cap space to work with.

A third-round pick in 2009 from Georgia Tech, Johnson proved his worth in 2012, notching 11.5 sacks in the final year of his rookie contract.

Andre Smith has been detained by authorities in Atlanta after attempting to board a plane while in possession of a handgun, according to WCPO Cincinatti.

Smith, an offensive lineman for the Cincinnati Bengals, was reportedly in possession of a .380 caliber handgun while at Hartsfield Jackson International Airport in Atlanta on Thursday. Smith, 25, was arrested and appeared in court on Friday morning. He posted $3,000 bond.

According to a recent New York Times article on this very sort of incident, Smith will likely not be charged with a federal crime, as more often than not local gun laws apply when handguns are discovered on travelers at an airport. Georgia law says all people in posession of a concealed handgun in the state must have a Georgia gun license.

Smith just finished his fourth season with the Bengals, in which he started all 16 games.
