The Carolina Hurricanes signed forward Alexander Semin Monday to a five-year extension, worth $7 million per season, the team announced.

Semin, 29, ranks second on the team with 30 points (8 goals, 22 assists) this season for the Hurricanes, who are 15-13-2 this season.

Semin spent the first seven seasons of his NHL career with the Washington Capitals and has scored 205 goals and 233 points in his career.

The team signed Semin to a one-year contract worth $7 million last offseason.

We’re very happy to retain Alex,” Carolina president and general manager Jim Rutherford said. “Alex is an elite player and has been a major contributor to the Hurricanes having a very strong top line.”

The Carolina Hurricanes signed left winger Alexander Semin on a one-year contract that will pay him $7 million next season, the team announced.

“We have done a lot of research about Alexander, and discussions about his fit with our team have included people at many different levels of our organization, including players, coaches and staff,” Hurricanes president and General Manager Jim Rutherford said. “What’s been clear throughout this process was his commitment to wanting to play in the NHL, and compete against the world’s best players. Alexander’s elite skill level and ability to score from the wing fill an important need on the ice, and we hope that a fresh start in Carolina will serve both Alexander and our team well.”

Semin, 28, is in his eighth NHL season, and played with the  Washington Capitals last season. He was second on the team in goals (21), assists (33) and points (54), and tied for fourth in plus/minus (+9).

Just two days after the New Jersey Devils lost in the Stanley Cup Finals to the Los Angeles Kings, Devils captain and impending free agent Zach Parise bluntly dismissed any talk of joining the team across the Hudson River, the New York Rangers.

Despite that, the Rangers intend to make a play for the 27-year-old Parise when the free-agent period begins July 1, the New York Post reports. Another potential target: Washington Capitals forward Alexander Semin. From the New York Post report:

Stymied thus far in his attempts to acquire the offensive force the Rangers likely need in order to take the next step following their so-near-and-yet-so-far 2011-12, Sather indicated his team would dive into the free agent pool that isn’t all that deep.

“The closer to the top you are, you have to be a little more aggressive if you want to get better,” the GM said. “If you trade, you have to give away assets, but in free agency you’re just giving away money and [taking] the chance the cap might shrink.

“I think we’re going to try to be as aggressive as possible in the free agent market.”

Parise and Semin are considered the top two sniper targets on the free-agent market. The Rangers are looking to add an elite offensive player after they scored only 2.15 goals per game in the NHL Playoffs. The Rangers bowed out in six games in the Eastern Conference finals against the Devils.

The Post notes that the Pittsburgh Penguins, Detroit Red Wings and Minnesota Wild are also expected to be among the clubs that make a play for Parise.

  • Report: Capitals’ Alexander Semin Plans To Become Unrestricted Free Agent

After a decade in the Washington Capitals’ organization, Alexander Semin has had enough — he wants to be a full-time player, and he’s willing to take his services elsewhere if that’s what it takes. Semin plans to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, reports ESPN’s Craig Custance.

Semin has no intention of signing a contract extension in Washington, according to agent Mark Gandler. He averaged 16:47 on the ice this past season, his lowest clip since his rookie year, and he wants to go somewhere else where he can play a greater role — preferably in the NHL, not the KHL.

“It was good while it lasted,” Gandler said of his client’s time in the nation’s capital. “With the lack of playoff success, with the direction they are going. They decided to change directions. That’s within their rights. Alex doesn’t fit into that system obviously. It just doesn’t make any sense to him. He plays, he did the best he could under the circumstances and he earned his right to be a free agent.”

Semin had 21 goals in 77 games for the Capitals this season, including three during the Caps’ playoff run. He earned earned $6.7 million this season, and it’s unclear what kind of money he’ll command on the open market this summer.

“I don’t know what the market is going to be,” Gandler said. “I know there aren’t many players like Alex around.”
