Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations for the Green Bay Packers announced Friday afternoon the team has signed a contract extension with starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Rodgers was drafted by the Packers in the first round of the 2005 draft at No. 24. In his first five seasons as a starter (2008-2012), Rodgers posted 21,332 passing yards, the most by a starting quarterback in his first five seasons in NFL history.

Rodgers has collected several NFL records, including No. 1 in NFL history with a career passer rating of 104.9 (min. 1,500 attempts). He has completed 1,752 of 2,665 passes for 21,661 yards, 171 touchdowns with 46 interceptions during his career. He also led the Packers to a Super Bowl XLV victory.

From the Packers site:

“Aaron is a true professional and a special player,” Thompson said. “He works hard, is humble, and is focused on his actions, on and off the field. He is an excellent teammate and pushes himself and others to be the very best. We are happy to reach an agreement to extend his career with the Packers.”

The new contract is reportedly for five years and $110 million.

Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers are closing in on a long-term extension that would make the 2005 first-round pick the highest-paid player in NFL history, ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter reported Thursday. Schefter reported that the deal, which has a good chance of being completed this offseason, could average $25 million per season.

That number would surpass Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, who signed a six-year, $120.6 million contract earlier this offseason that made him the highest-paid NFL player.

Midway through his first season as the Packers’ starting quarterback in 2008, Rodgers signed a contract extension that paid him $65 million over seven seasons. Rodgers has two years and $19.75 million remaining on that deal, including base salaries of $9.25 million in 2013 and $10.5 million in 2014.

Since becoming the Packers’ full-time starter in 2008 after three seasons backing up Brett Favre, the 29-year-old Rodgers has blossomed into one of the NFL’s top quarterbacks. Under Rodgers’ lead, the Packers won Super Bowl XLV in 2011.

Last season, Rodgers placed in the top five of NFL quarterbacks in almost every important statistical category. He completed 67.2 percent of his passes for 4,295 yards while putting up a 108.0 quarterback rating. He threw 39 touchdowns to only eight interceptions.

In an interview with USA Today’s Robert Klemko, free-agent wide receiver Greg Jennings said that the quality of the team’s quarterback will be a major factor in where he decides to play next season.

“Coaching means a lot, the dynamic of the team,” Jennings told Klemko. “To me, the quarterback means a lot, if they have one or not, and I have to make sure my family is comfortable.”

Jennings’ statement seems like the norm for free-agent wide receivers, but Klemko points out that it likely rules out the Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans, Oakland Raiders and Philadelphia Eagles — all of which have shaky situations at quarterback.

SI.com’s Peter King ranks Jennings the No. 9 available free agent on the market, and second among wide receivers to Pittsburgh’s Mike Wallace.

Jennings played in only eight games last season while battling a groin injury. He caught 36 passes for 366 yards and four touchdowns. For Jennings, a return to the play with Packers and superstar quarterback Aaron Rodgers is still possible — general manager Ted Thompson said last month that he would like to keep Jennings in a Packer uniform. But Jennings’ reported contract demands could push him out of the Packers’ range.

All eyes will be on the Super Bowl this weekend, but for the Green Bay Packers and quarterback Aaron Rodgers, they are more likely to be paying attention to the aftermath of the game when Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco is expected to ask for big money in contract negotiations.

On Monday, it was reported that Flacco will likely ask for a contract in the $100 million range that includes $40 million in guaranteed money. New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees received that exact deal last offseason.

Rodgers, whose contract is not up until 2014, gets paid an average of $9.3 million a season and has been the NFL’s top-rated quarterback the past two seasons. Flacco’s passer rating is 87.2 over the past three seasons, which ranks 14th for quarterbacks with at least 30 starts over that time period.

The new franchise-tag rules mean that if a player is tagged in back-to-back years, he in the second season makes 120 percent of the previous year, and if he’s franchised a third straight year, he makes 144 percent. Last year the tag for quarterbacks was relatively cheap at $14.4 million, but it will go up at least a little this year.

Rodgers, 29, threw for 4,295 yards with 39 touchdowns and eight interceptions for the Packers last season.

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers won’t play in the upcoming Pro Bowl, according to Jason Wilde of ESPNWisconsin.

Rodgers cited a collection of ailments including an injured knee and ankle injury. He reported having an injection in his knee on Tuesday.

He is the second quarterback to take his name off the NFC roster. The Redskins’ Robert Griffin III will miss the all-star game while he recovers from last week’s knee surgery to repair his ACL and LCL.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees was selected to take Griffin’s roster spot. A replacement will also been needed for quarterback Matt Ryan if the Falcons win the upcoming NFC Championship Game and qualify for the Super Bowl.

Rodgers, who completed 67.2 percent of his passes for 4,295 yards, 39 touchdowns and eight interceptions, was critical of the effort exerted by some of his NFC teammates, who “embarrassed” him in last year’s Pro Bowl.

Green Bay Packers quarterback and reigning NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers will be the first to admit that his team has struggled this season and is putting the blame of himself.

“I haven’t played as well as the expectations are, obviously,” Rodgers said on 540 AM in Milwaukee. ”The ones I put on myself, I like to think are as high or higher than the ones people outside put on me. It’s interesting to look at the stats for what they are and think I’m not playing my best football right now.”

Rodgers has thrown for 1,307 yards with 10 touchdowns and four interceptions. His 97.o quarterback rating is eighth in the league.

“I set the bar high and I expect to play at a higher level. Been making just some mistakes I’m not used to making. Throwing the ball to the other team, I’ve done that four times already. … Uncharacteristic of the way I’ve played,” Rodgers said. “Missed some throws I’m accustomed to hitting. Haven’t played the way of the standard I’ve set.”

The Packers are 2-3 and play at the undefeated Houston Texas (5-0) on Sunday, the first of three straight road games for the team.

Green Bay Packer James Jones took a tongue-lashing from quarterback Aaron Rodgers in front of a national television audience Thursday night, but the wide receiver told reporters it’s all good today.

“Me and A-Rod are way closer than that, man, to let something like that come in between us,” Jones told a gaggle of reporters at his locker Tuesday.

Rodgers was seen chastising the sixth-year receiver after his uncertainty during a route ended with Bears cornerback Tim Jennings intercepting the quarterback’s pass.

Jones explained the intricacies of teammate relationships and that the interception was his fault.

“We’re out there trying to win the ball game. It was my fault. I gave him mixed signals,” Jones said Tuesday. “I mean, we’re all emotional out there, man. It’s common, man. We do a lot of head gestures and stuff like that, the camera may not just be on us. Me and him, we’re both competitive, we’re trying to win. It was my fault. We don’t ever want to turn the ball over. I’m not mad at him. Shoot, we’re trying to win, man. Get on me. I messed up.”

During the same game, Bears quarterback Jay Cutler also drew criticism for shoving offensive tackle J’Marcus Webb after Cutler was pressured in the pocket.

The incidents gave FOX NFL analyst and NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw reason to tell Rodgers and Cutler to stop embarrassing their teammates.

For now, he is happy that New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees received his big contract worth $100 million.

“You got to say he’s a fortunate man,”Rodgers told NFL.com about Brees. ”I don’t think he’s complaining right now. That stuff takes care of itself, I still have a few years left on my deal, and we’ll talk about that when we get there.”

Rodgers, the 2011 NFL Most Valuable Player, signed a six-year, $65 million contract in 2008. He will make $8.5 million this year, $9.75 million in 2013 and $11 million in 2014.

The Brewers hope to capitalize on not only Rodgers’ humor but also his massive popularity in the state of Wisconsin. A survey released by Public Policy Polling indicated that Rodgers had a higher approval rating in the state than Mother Theresa, George Washington, and Martin Luther King.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is already known well by national TV audiences for more than just his prowess on the football field, as his “Discount Double Check” commercials for State Farm have made him even more of a household name. But Rodgers has his eye on bigger and better things, pop culture-wise: He’s interested in hosting “Saturday Night Live.”

Rodgers mentioned the possibility several times yesterday on ESPN radio in Milwaukee, according to Kevin Seifert of ESPN. The reigning MVP said he met with a couple of SNL cast members over the weekend in Indianapolis, and he’s been networking to get on the show.

“I’m hopeful that we can figure something out there,” Rodgers said.

Rodgers, 28, was the Packers’ first-round draft pick in 2005. He took over the starting job in 2008 with the retirement of Brett Favre, and he vaulted quickly into the national spotlight by winning the Super Bowl last winter and league MVP honors just last week.

Crossing over from “star athlete” to pure “star,” however, may be the hard part, and hosting SNL would be a huge step in that direction. As Seifert notes, past athletes to host the NBC variety show include crossover stars like Fran Tarkenton, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Joe Montana, Charles Barkley, Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Nancy Kerrigan and Walter Payton.

Three days after the Packers’ loss to the New York Giants, Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers spent some of his time talking to ESPN 540 radio, mourning the early exit of his team from the playoffs.  After Rodgers finished answering questions about what he and the team could have done differently to win against the Giants, he finally addressed what everyone has been wondering:  Has he called Miss America yet?

Before winning Saturday night’s pageant, then-Miss Wisconsin Laura Kaeppeler declared on National TV: “If you’re watching, Aaron Rodgers, call me.”

At the time of the pageant, Rodgers claims he was watching the Broncos-Patriots game and also keeping track of the pageant race online.  The Pro Bowl quarterback said he was bombarded with text messages after Kaeppeler’s shout out.

“So eventually I clicked over,” Rodgers said to ESPN 540 radio, “and actually I clicked over when it was down to the top five and was amazed as it went four, she’s still up there. Three, she’s still up there. Two, she’s still up there. Is she really going to win this thing? And then, sure enough, she did. So I’ve got to give her a lot of credit for that. That’s quite an accomplishment. A whole year of getting to do all of that Miss America stuff. That’s exciting for Wisconsin, the one bright spot over the weekend.”

Reigning Super Bowl MVP Aaron Rodgers blamed the Green Bay Packers stunning loss to the New York Giants last night on poor play, not rust, according to the New York Post.

“Oh, it’s real — we got beat by a team that played better tonight,” Rodgers told the Post. “That’s the reality of this league.”

“We just turned the ball over too many times to win,” Rodgers said. “They had a good plan, but we had a lot of chances to execute and didn’t do it. We put our defense in a tough spot, and that’s why our season is over.”

The Packers had three lost fumbles, an interception, and upwards of six dropped passes last night in the 37-20 thumping at home to the Giants. The loss brings a surprising end to what some thought would be a fairy tale season resulting in the team’s second consecutive Super Bowl.

Instead, the 15-2 Packers will begin their offseason Monday morning.

The 10-7 Giants will play the 14-3 San Francisco 49ers Sunday evening in the NFC Championship.

“They both bring different things to the table, but honestly right now I definitely have to go with … Aaron, his body of work at such a young age, his attention to detail, his discipline, I think it’s really second to none — its un-paralleled,” Jennings said, as transcribed by ESPN.com.

There’s been speculation all year long that Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers could meet up in a head-to-head showdown at the end of this season. Now, it’s been confirmed.

    No, not that one.

Brady and Rodgers were named on Tuesday night as starting quarterbacks for the annual Pro Bowl, slated to be held on Jan. 29 in Honolulu. This marks the seventh selection for Brady and the second for Rodgers. The two superstars will headline their respective conferences in the 66th annual all-star exhibition.

This marks the third consecutive season, however, that the Pro Bowl has been held the week before the Super Bowl and not the week after. This means both conference champion quarterbacks will be held out of the game, so if either Brady’s New England Patriots or Rodgers’ Green Bay Packers should qualify for the big game in Indianapolis, the QBs’ backups will start instead. Ben Roethlisberger and Philip Rivers were named backup quarterbacks for the AFC, while Drew Brees and Eli Manning got the nods for the NFC squad.

The Patriots led the AFC with eight selections for the Pro Bowl; the 49ers will send eight of their own for the NFC, most notably running back Frank Gore.

The Green Bay Packers, who this weekend clinched the top seed in the NFC, are mulling over whether they will rest their starters in their final game of the season this weekend against the Detroit Lions.

“I’m not going to stand here and tell you we’re going to give away an opportunity to win a game,” Packers head coach Mike McCarthy told ESPN. “We’re going to play to win the game next week. I’m not real excited about a division opponent coming in here and thinking we’re not going to do everything we can to get to 15-1. But health is an issue for us and I think that’s stating the obvious.”

With their 35-21 win over the Chicago Bears last night, the Packers sit atop the NFL with a 14-1 overall record. The next best records in the league belong to the San Francisco 49ers and the New England Patriots, who are both currently 12-3.

At one point Green Bay stood 13-0 and were staring at a potential undefeated season, however those hopes were squashed when the team was upset 19-14 by the Kansas City Chiefs in week 15. With the possibility of a record setting 17-0 year off the shelf, many expect the Packers’ decision to rest their star players to be a much easier one.

“I think that’s going to be up to Mike depending on how he wants to play it,” quarterback Aaron Rodgers told ESPN after being asked whether he would play Sunday. “We’ll fall in line. I think as a close friend of [backup Matt Flynn], I wouldn’t mind seeing him get an opportunity to play a little bit. But I’ll definitely do whatever Mike says.”

Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers was named NFC Offensive Player of the Month and Houston Texans RB Arian Foster was named AFC Offensive Players of the Month by the NFL, according to tweets from their respective team’s accounts.

This is Rodgers’ second NFC Offensive Player of the Month honor this season. If Rodgers is able to win the two remaining this season, he will become the first player to sweep the award in league history. Rodgers’ strong start under center has led the Packers to a 7-0 start.
