The Oakland Athletics have reached an agreement to sign Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes for a four-year $36 million deal, according to Yahoo! Sports.

The Miami Marlins were believed to have offered Cespedes a six-year deal worth less than $40 million. While several teams were considered to be interested in the prospect’s services, few had anticipated the Athletics to make a bid.

Cespedes is considered by many to be one of the top Cuban prospects in years. Some project the 26-year-old to develop into a power hitting centerfielder at the Major League level. It is believed that he will demand a contract higher than the $30.25 million deal given to Aroldis Chapman in 2010.

Last season Cespedes hit .333/.424/.667 with 33 home runs and 99 RBI in 90 games in Cuba.

Dominican baseball player Yoenis Cespedes may be leaving the United States after a meeting Wednesday with the Miami Marlins, according to MLB.com. His agent, Adam Katz, told ESPN.com that no further meetings with other clubs have been scheduled.

“We had a good meeting,” Katz told ESPN.com about Cespedes’ meeting with Miami. “They made a very impressive presentation. Discussions are ongoing and productive. But there are several other teams in the mix.”

Cespedes, 26, has narrowed his list of possible teams to the Chicago Cubs, Marlins, Detroit Tigers, Baltimore Orioles, Chicago White Sox, and Cleveland Indians.

Though he has been names a free agent officially by Major League Baseball, Cespedes would still be required to gain approval from the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control.

In 2010-11 in Cuba, Cespedes hit .333 with 33 home runs and 99 RBIs.

Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes still isn’t eligible for employment in the United States, but major league teams are already lining up to negotiate for his services. Chief among the suitors are the Miami Marlins, who have “strong interest” in Cespedes according to MLB.com.

“If it can be arranged, and he wants to come to Miami and see our ballpark, it would be great,” Marlins president David Samson said. “From our standpoint, we are aggressively negotiating a contract, but there is no way of knowing if we will be a high bidder.”

Cespedes, 26, obtained temporary residency in the Dominican Republic last week. He’s since been cleared by Major League Baseball to negotiate with teams — and in addition to the Marlins, the White Sox, Cubs, Orioles and Tigers are also rumored to have interest.

While Cespedes may enter into a handshake agreement to play for a team in the States, he can’t officially sign anything until he’s been legally cleared.
