The Miami Marlins reportedly offered Dominican outfielder Yeonis Cespedes a contract Wednesday, according to MLB.com. Cespedes left the country shortly after meeting with the team.

According to reports, the Marlins offered Cespedes a six-year deal worth $40 million. The Marlins have been interested in Cespedes for months, the report states.

“It was good to see him again,” Marlins president David Samson said Wednesday on The Dan LeBatard Show. “We hadn’t seen him since he was in the Dominican. He’s still not a free agent, officially.

“But he was able to be in town for some appointments, I guess. He wanted to come and see the ballpark, and we’re always happy to show people the ballpark.”

Cespedes cannot legally sign with the team until he is cleared by the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control.

Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes is scheduled to meet with the Miami Marlins tomorrow, according to MLB.com.

The 26-year-old free-agent was given his travel visa today, which will allow him to visit the United States from the Dominican Republic.

Cespedes is considered by many to be one of the top Cuban prospects in years. Some project the 26-year-old to develop into a power hitting centerfielder at the Major League level. It is believed that he will demand a contract higher than the $30.25 million deal given to Aroldis Chapman in 2010.

Last season Cespedes hit .333/.424/.667 with 33 home runs and 99 RBI in 90 games in Cuba.

The Miami Marlins have not changed their stance about their lack of interest in free-agent first baseman Prince Fielder, however the club does plan to be aggressive in their pursuit of Cuban defector Yoenis Cespedes, according to the Florida Sun-Sentinel.

“Aggressive right to the point of stupidity, but not quite there,” Marlins president David Samson said on club’s pursuit of Cepedes in an appearance on 790 The Ticket. “We think he’s a perfect fit for us, but it has to be sane. [We've] expressing interest, going to visit, making it very clear to his representatives and to him and his family that we think he should not be anywhere other than Miami. As a Cuban and someone in the DR, it makes perfect sense. We have a perfect position for him to play. It would be great.”
