The St. Louis Cardinals have come to terms with catcher Yadier Molina on a five-year, $75 million contract, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

The 28-year-old has been considered a major leader on the St. Louis Cardinals team which won the 2011 World Series. The team failed to re-sign superstar Albert Pujols to a mega-contract this offseason, and had not made any major deals until today with Molina.

Molina is a four-time Golden Glove Award winner, and three-time All-Star. Last season Molina hit .305 with 14 home runs and 65 RBIs.

The St. Louis Cardinals and catcher Yadier Molina are nearing an agreement on a multi-year extension worth over $10 million per year, according to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

A source tells Strauss that “positive momentum” has been achieved in negotiations between the Cardinals and Molina’s agent, Melvin Roman. If completed, the deal would make Molina the seventh catcher in baseball history to make over $10 million annually.

While the contract is not yet a done deal, a source told Strauss that both sides want the matter resolved before the Cards begin their exhibition schedule on March 5, a week from today.

Molina has won the National League’s catching Gold Glove four years running. He’s a .274 career hitter in eight seasons with St. Louis.
