Former Arkansas coaches say players quit on team

Several coaches who guided Arkansas through the 2012 season after coach Bobby Petrino was fired say that the team quit, reports the Sporting News.

Paul Haynes, who now coaches at Kent State, and Paul Petrino, who is at Idaho, said they had problems with the school hiring interim coach John L. Smith for 10 months. The Razorbacks started the season as a preseason Top 10 pick and ended up finishing 4-8. Smith was fired in November and now coaches at Division II Fort Lewis College.

“There were some seniors who kind of hung it up, to be honest with you,” Petrino said. “They were going to worry about their futures more than that team. A couple seniors said they were hurt and I don’t know if they really were.”

“I don’t think an A.D. should ever hire somebody for 10 months,” Petrino said. “Players know what that means; they understand that. It hurts the power of the head coach and the assistants.

Haynes said that the school planned on getting rid of the coaches but instead of giving Smith 10 months, two years would have been better.

“When you give 10 months, everyone is on egg shells,” Haynes said.

One day after word leaked that LSU head football coach Les Miles had a five-year, $27.5-million offer from Arkansas on the table, Miles received an extension and raise from LSU, the school announced.

Details of the contract are still in the negotiation process, according to the school’s press release, which contained the following comments from athletic director Joe Alleva:

“Les Miles is one of the premier coaches in the country and has LSU in contention for championships year in and year out. Only two coaches in the 119-year history of LSU football have coached as many years at this school and only one has won more games.  Les Miles has made a commitment to LSU and LSU is solidifying its commitment to Les Miles.”

“The coaching business is a competitive one and it is important to compensate our coach for his accomplishments and his worth. Les has not received a pay increase since his salary was automatically elevated following our national championship in 2007 and he has continued to keep LSU on the national stage.

“Our intent was to address his contract following this year’s bowl game, but speculation about other job opportunities accelerated our process a little. I think we have accomplished the important step of securing Les Miles as our head coach for the long-term good of the program.”

The Associated Press’ Brett Martel first reported the extension on Twitter.

Miles is in the midst of another strong season, as the No. 7 Tigers finished 10-2 overall and 6-2 in the SEC after topping the Razorbacks 20-13 last Friday. The coach owns an 85-20 record in eight years at LSU. He was previously a head coach at Oklahoma State from 2001 to 2004, after serving as an assistant for four different teams dating back to 1980.

In both 2007 and 2011, Miles was considered a candidate to leave LSU for Michigan, where he played as an offensive lineman in 1974-75 and coached as an assistant in 1980-81 and from 1987-94.
