Two weeks after changing their starting quarterback, the Kansas City Chiefs are shaking things up on the defensive side of the ball. Head Coach Romeo Crennel announced today that the team has signed defensive lineman Shaun Smith and cur cornerback Stanford Routt, according to a tweet from Kansas City Star Chiefs beat writer Adam Teicher.

Routt had only just signed with the Chiefs this offseason after being cut by the Oakland Raiders. Smith previously played for the Chiefs in 2010, where he gained notoriety for being accused of grabbing an opponents’ private parts in consecutive weeks.

Crennel changed things up on the coaching side as well. Teicher reports that Gary Gibbs, previously the Chiefs’ linebackers coach, will be promoted to defensive coordinator – a position that Crennel filled in addition to his head coaching responsibilities.

The Chiefs have endured a miserable season thus far. The team is 1-7 and has not led a game in regulation time for the entire season (their one win came in overtime against the New Orleans Saints).

The Oakland Raiders announced Thursday that they have cut cornerback Stanford Routt just six months after signing him to a five-year deal, according to ESPN.com.

The Raiders and Routt agreed to a five-year deal worth $54.5 million in August, but the overhauled coaching staff decided to let Routt go.

Routt, 28, has spent the last seven years with Oakland, recording 10 interceptions a 51 pass breakups.
