Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Todd Monken will be named as Southern Mississippi’s next coach on Tuesday, reports the Oklahoman.

Monken ends his two-year stint at Oklahoma State and will not coach the team in the Heart of Dallas Bowl against Purdue on Jan. 1. Monken replaces Ellis Johnson who was fired after one season. Southern Mississippi finished 0-12 this season, after winning 12 games the previous year.

According to the report some possibilities to take Monken’s place are  Cowboys offensive line coach Joe Wickline, wide receivers coach Kasey Dunn, inside receivers coach Doug Meacham and running backs coach Jemal Singleton.

Southern Miss successfully tapped the Cowboys staff in 2007, hiring then-offensive coordinator Larry Fedora, who directed the four most prolific offensive seasons in the school’s history, as well as four bowl appearances.

Monken interviewed for the Southern Miss job a year ago, when Fedora left after four seasons to become the coach at North Carolina, but the school went instead with Johnson, who had been the defensive coordinator at South Carolina.

Ellis Johnson, head football coach at the University of Southern Mississippi was fired and the search for his replacement has already begun, reports the Sun Herald’s Patrick Magee:

This was Johnson’s first season with the Golden Eagles, and the team finished 0-12, the worst in school history. Johnson also had short coaching stints at The Citadel (three seasons, 12-22) and Garner-Webb (one season, 5-6).

Early on Monday, Southern Miss President Aubrey Lucas said the football program was being reviewed, but he declined to comment about Johnson at the time. Johnson met with members of the team and Athletic Director Jeff Hammond on Monday afternoon. When asked about the meeting, an assistant sports information director said, “There is nothing to talk about.”

Southern Mississippi will play a road game at Arkansas on Sept. 14, 2013, the school announced. Athletic Director Jeff Hammond said that the school will receive a record payout, but declined to get into specifics, but it is expected to be over $1 million.

The Golden Eagles played at South Carolina in 2010 and earned $900,000.

“Playing quality opponents it helps with our national exposure as well as a new regional rivalry that allows our fan base an opportunity to see their team play,” Hammond said. ”We are not strangers to playing teams in the SEC and now we can add Arkansas to that long list.”

Southern Miss has only won one of their last 17 games against SEC competition. The Golden Eagles will host Nebraska and travel to Boise State in 2013 as well.
