The Buffalo Bills were anxious to see an oft-injured Shawne Merriman compete at full speed this summer. Apparently, the defensive end’s recovery from shoulder and Achilles surgeries were not enough.

Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer tweeted the Bills have informed Merriman that he will be released today.

Merriman’s once promising NFL career shifted to Buffalo after the Chargers released him in 2010 after six seasons, including 39.5 sacks in his first three NFL years.

Merriman has recorded five sacks in the last four seasons.

Shawne Merriman, the Buffalo Bills defensive end, returned to practice and fully participated in team drills for the first time since undergoing Achilles surgery during the off-season, according to the Bills website. The team shut him down after five games last season.

Merriman has been plagued with injuries since the 2008 season, as Josh Alper noted on ProFootballTalk.com, “four straight seasons filled with more missed games than sacks for a player who was once one of the premier pass rushers in all of football.”

He is guaranteed $3 million next season by the Bills and figures to play alongside defensive linemen Mario Williams and Mark Anderson.
