The best-selling jersey in the NFL during the month of May belongs to a player who has yet to play a game. Washington Redskins rookie QB Robert Griffin III, the No. 2 pick in April’s draft, topped all other players in NFLShop.com jersey sales, reports the Washington Post‘s Dan Steinberg.

Over the period from April 1 to May 28, RGIII ranked third, even though rookie jerseys did not go on sale until April 26. Peyton Manning topped Tim Tebow for the best-selling jersey during that period.

In May, its first full month of sales, RGIII’s jersey sold better than any other jersey.

Griffin III also beat out fellow rookie quarterback Andrew Luck, the No. 1 overall pick, whose jersey ranked fourth on both lists.

Washington sports fans have a history of buying jerseys in mass. Steinberg reports that when quarterback Donovan McNabb arrived in Washington, his jersey ranked second in sales. Alexander Ovechkin of the Capitals and Stephen Strasburg of the Nationals have also led their leagues in jersey sales.

The speculation has been ongoing for months, but now we may have some finality — Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay today strongly implied, if not altogether stated, that he intends to take Stanford’s Andrew Luck with the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft later this month.

Both the Colts and the Washington Redskins, who traded up to land the No. 2 pick, have been meeting regularly with both Luck and Baylor’s Robert Griffin III in the weeks leading up to the start of the draft on April 26. Luck has been the presumed favorite to go No. 1 all along, but Baylor’s Heisman Trophy-winning 2011 season and his fantastic pro day performance have helped to keep him in the running.

Now, it would appear, Luck has prevailed.

With Luck likely headed to Indy and Griffin going No. 2 as the consolation prize, all eyes are on the Minnesota Vikings at No. 3. It remains to be seen whether the Vikes will keep the pick or make a move as draft day draws closer.

The Washington Redskins may not have the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft later this month, but they remain confident that Robert Griffin III will fall to them in the No. 2 spot in April 26. So confident, in fact, that their offensive coordinator is already meeting regularly with RG3 to teach him the offense. According to Chick Hernandez of Comcast SportsNet:

While the Indianpolis Colts control their own destiny at No. 1 and maintain publicly that they haven’t reached a final decision, the Redskins firmly believe Stanford’s Andrew Luck is a lock to be the first overall pick.

The Redskins traded a bundle of four picks, including this year’s No. 6, to the St. Louis Rams on March 11 to acquire the No. 2. They’ve long been eyeing Griffin, the Baylor product who won the Heisman Trophy last fall, as their franchise quarterback of the future.

Robert Griffin III will not participate in any private workout requests, according to ProFootballTalk.

A source close to the prospect as well as ESPN’s Adam Schefter have confirmed that Griffin doesn’t plan on participating in private workouts. It was reported earlier today that the Colts had asked Griffin for a private appointment, but his agent denied that request.

The Washington Redskins, who have the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft, did not request a workout with Griffin because they felt they saw everything they needed to at his pro day. The Colts were in California today to perform a private workout with Andrew Luck.

Griffin was the 2011 Heisman Trophy winner, throwing for 4,293 yards for Baylor.

The Washington Redskins have not, and will not request a private workout from Robert Griffin III, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

It was reported earlier today that the Colts had requested a private workout with the Heisman Trophy winner but that the quarterback’s agent had declined. Indianapolis is currently in California, conducting a private workout with rival quarterback Andrew Luck.

Luck is considered by many the obvious choice to go No. 1 overall in this month’s NFL draft to the Colts, however, some have speculated that given Griffin’s outstanding performance at his pro day that he might slide ahead of Luck. Regardless of the order, both players are expected to be taken with the first two picks of the draft as the Washington Redskins specifically traded up to the No. 2 pick in order to secure a franchise quarterback.

The Washington Redskins recently traded for the No. 2 overall pick in order to draft either Luck or Griffin.

  • Report: Colts Still ‘Seriously Considering’ Drafting Robert Griffin III Over Andrew Luck

    Decrease fontDecrease font
    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

Stanford prodigy Andrew Luck has been the presumptive No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft for over a year now — but with just a few weeks to go, it’s still not a slam dunk. In fact, ESPN personality Michael Wilbon said in a radio interview with Tony Kornheiser today that the Colts are still putting serious thought into drafting Baylor’s Robert Griffin III instead.

“It’s not like I’m following this closely,” Wilbon said. “But I had the occasion over the weekend to talk to a couple of people who have intimate knowledge of what the Colts are thinking. And you and I have talked very briefly on the show about are they still considering RGIII? Tony, I’m told they are.”

Luck passed for 3,517 yards, 37 touchdowns and only 10 interceptions for the Cardinal last season, winning the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award given to the nation’s best senior quarterback. He was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy. Griffin won the Heisman, throwing for 4,293 yards, 37 TDs and only six picks.

Wilbon says the Colts’ intelligentsia have speculated that Griffin has the superior pocket-passing ability to Luck.

“They are of the opinion, some people that are having input into this pick, that RG3 is better in the pocket,” Wilbon said. “They have stats, they have analysis, they have information that says to them it’s Luck who is faster to leave the pocket and not be as good in the pocket. And RG3 is better in the pocket, he’s a better pocket passer, better arm. And that they are seriously still considering RG3.”

  • Robert Griffin III Tells Jon Gruden He Is The Top Pick

Former Baylor star quarterback and top draft prospect Robert Griffin III told former NFL coach and ESPN broadcaster Jon Gruden that even if Andrew Luck is chosen first in the upcoming draft, he believes he also deserves to be the No. 1 overall pick, according to NFL.com.

“There’s two No. 1 picks. Washington didn’t trade up to No. 2 to pick a guy at No. 2, they’re going to pick a guy they’d pick at No. 1. Really, in this draft, there are two No. 1 picks. That’s why I won’t be mad if Andy goes first,” Griffin told the former NFL coach on ESPN’s “Gruden Camp.”

“The one thing I’ve always said: I don’t play against quarterbacks, I play against defenses,” Griffin continued. “No matter what, it’s going to be ‘Luck vs. Griffin’ for the rest of our careers. We always know that we’ll be compared side-by-side.”

With Andrew Luck widely believed to be chosen first by the Indianapolis Colts on April 26, Griffin will likely be picked second by the Washington Redskins. Washington traded three first-round picks and a second-round pick in March to acquire the second overall pick from the St.Louis Rams.

  • Donovan McNabb: Robert Griffin III Doesn’t Fit With Mike Shanahan’s Offense

    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

Former Washington Redskins QB, Donovan McNabb thinks that Robert Griffin III will not be successful in Mike Shanahans’ offense, according to ProFootballTalk.

“I don’t think it’s a good fit,” McNabb said today on ESPN’s First Take.

“If this doesn’t work this year, if we don’t see a splash like a Cam Newton splash, this could be it. . .  How long does he have with RG3? The seat is hot right now.”

“Here’s a guy coming out who’s very talented, mobile, strong arm, we’ve already heard he’s intelligent, football mind,” McNabb said. “Are you going to cater the offense around his talent, and what he’s able to do, or are you going to bring the Houston offense with Matt Schaub over to him and have him kind of be embedded in that?”

“We talk so much about Mike Shanahan and the things he was able to do in Denver,” McNabb said. “Well, I have a couple of names for you that Mike Shanahan — quarterbacks he’s coached — and the lack of success that he’s had.”

McNabb played one unsuccessful season for the Redskins under coach Shanahan in 2010. The former Pro Bowler got off to the worst start of his career before being benched for Rex Grossman. In 2011 he played just six games with the Minnesota Vikings before losing his starting spot to rookie Christian Ponder. He is currently a free-agent.

This season Griffin scored 37 touchdowns and threw the ball for 4,293 yards for Baylor. He is one of the most talked about players coming out of the combine and was the 2011 Heisman Trophy winner, Consensus All-American, Davey O’Brien Award winner, and the Manning Award winner.

    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

Rex Grossman will not be the Washington Redskins’ starting quarterback anymore, but he’s sticking around anyway. Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk has learned that Grossman has agreed to a new one-year contract with the Skins.

The Redskins made a blockbuster trade last week to move up in next month’s NFL draft and acquire the No. 2 overall pick, presumably to select Robert Griffin III. That means that Grossman, who started 13 games for Washington last season, will ease into a backup role and perhaps serve as a veteran mentor for the young Griffin.

Grossman began his career with the Chicago Bears, for whom he played six seasons. He led the Bears to a 13-3 campaign and an NFC title in 2006. He arrived in Washington in 2010, first working as Donovan McNabb’s backup before replacing McNabb late in the second.

Grossman turns 32 in August. For his career, he’s completed 863 passes for 10,232 yards, 56 touchdowns and 60 interceptions.

  • Report: Rams Will Trade No. 2 Overall Pick In NFL Draft

    Decrease fontDecrease font
    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

All the pre-NFL draft speculation in recent weeks has surrounded the Indianapolis Colts, proud owners of the No. 1 selection in the April pecking order — but now, there’s big news regarding the No. 2 pick, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

It’s long been assumed that the top two picks in the draft will be quarterbacks — in some order, Stanford’s Andrew Luck and Baylor’s Robert Griffin III. The Rams are all set at that position with Sam Bradford headed for stardom, and they can get better value out of the high pick by dealing it away.

That being the case, you can expect all the same teams rumored in the Eli Manning sweepstakes — think Miami, Washington, Seattle or maybe the New York Jets — to be in the hunt for a pick to nab Luck or Griffin.

As Schefter points out, the New York Giants had to unload a boatload of assets to acquire Eli Manning back in 2004. Expect this deal to be a similar blockbuster when it goes down.

Robert Griffin III had the fasted 40-yard dash time out of any quarterback participating in last weekend’s NFL Combine with a 4.41 official time. Griffin, however, thinks he ran it even faster than the official scoreboard reported.

The Associated Press reports that Griffin, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, claims he was told on the field that he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.35 seconds. If that were true, it would make him one of the fastest players in the draft overall.

Although he did not throw in Indianapolis, he participated in other drills and met with eight different teams. He is considered to be one of the top two or three potential pick’s in April’s NFL draft.

Griffin threw 4,293 yards and 37 touchdowns with six interceptions this season. During his time at Baylor he totaled 78 touchdowns for 10,366 yards and 17 interceptions.

According to a poll conducted by Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, 14 of 15 NFL scouts favor selecting Andrew Luck in the NFL draft ahead of Robert Griffin III.

Cole named two main reasons often cited by the scouts — one being size (Luck is 6-foot-4, 235 pounds to Griffin’s 6-2, 220), and the other being system considerations (Griffin no doubt benefited from the spread offense played at Baylor).

Luck threw for 3,517 yards, 37 touchdowns and only 10 interceptions last season, winning the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award given to the nation’s best senior quarterback. He was the runner-up for Heisman Trophy honors for the second consecutive season.

That Heisman, however, went to Griffin, who threw for 4,293 yards, 37 TDs and only six picks.

The Indianapolis Colts will choose between the two signal-callers with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft on April 26, 2012.

A source has told NFL.com that the Cleveland Browns would like to trade up to acquire
Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III with the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL draft.

The Browns are currently slotted to select fourth overall in the draft. While the Minnesota Vikings and St. Louis Rams, two teams with picks in front of the Browns, are not expected to draft a quarterback, moving up would protect them against one of those two teams trading that pick away to another franchise.

Colt McCoy served as the Browns starting quarterback before suffering a blow to the head that forced him to miss the team’s final three games. The former Texas star posted just a 74.6 quarterback rating this season for Cleveland.

During this past season at Baylor, Griffin started and played all 13 games completing 291 passes gaining 4,293 yards through the air for a total of 37 touchdowns. During his career with the Bears he completed 790 passes collected 10,366 yards.
