Jason Quick of The Oregonian reports that the Portland Trail Blazers’ two coaching finalists, Terry Stotts and Kaleb Canales, interviewed with owner Paul Allen in London on Friday.

Quick writes that Allen is expected to deliberate with general manager Neil Olshey and board of directors chair Bert Kolde and then make a decision in the coming days. Allen, who has a home in London and has his yacht docked there for the Olympics, declined an interview request from Quick.

Stotts is a two-time NBA head coach (Milwaukee Bucks, Atlanta Hawks) who is currently an assistant with the Dallas Mavericks. Canales is a former Blazers video intern who climbed the ranks and served as the team’s interim coach last season after Nate McMillan was fired.

Amid a disappointing 28-38 season for his Portland Trail Blazers, owner Paul Allen wrote an impassioned letter to the team’s fan base today, admitting the year had been a failure but urging fans to anticipate “the start of a new chapter in Trail Blazers basketball.”

Allen reflected on a season that featured the injury-forced retirement of Brandon Roy, more bad news for Greg Oden and a locker-room mutiny that led to the firing of head coach Nate McMillan. He called the season “one of the most disappointing years I’ve had in my 24 seasons as owner of the Portland Trail Blazers.”

The Blazers looked like one of the best teams in the NBA in January, as they started the season 7-2. But injuries and chemistry issues precipitated a huge decline, and the team shockingly lost 36 of its last 57.

Allen went on to explain the Blazers were hard at work on finding a permanent coach and a new GM, and he liked the team’s chances of competing next season considering its salary cap space and wealth of draft picks. He also issued a thank-you to “all of the fans who make the Rose Garden the best place in the country to watch a basketball game.”
