Report: Mike Wallace to report to Steelers on Tuesday

Decrease fontDecrease font
Enlarge fontEnlarge font

Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace, who held out through training camp in hopes of landing a new contract, will report to the team on Tuesday, reports NFL.com’s Aditi Kinkhabwala.

There have been previous reports that Wallace was close to returning to the team — without a new deal — but he has yet to sign his $2.742 million tender offer.

Wallace caught 72 passes for 1,193 yards and eight touchdowns last season, earning a Pro Bowl nod. But even if Wallace reports soon, it’s unclear how productive he will be early in the season. Pittsburgh brought in new offensive coordinator Todd Haley, and Wallace will have to adjust to scheme changes.

The ever colorful (and cryptic) Jim Irsay on Thursday evening suggested that his Indianapolis Colts are on the verge of a big trade, tweeting the following:

Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com interprets the tweets thusly:

Curiously, former NFL personnel man Michael Lombardi, now of NFL Network, has completely different players in mind:

Not sure how long we may have to wait to see who is right — or if, as Irsay wrote in hedging his bets, the deal may “crumble.”

UPDATE: As reporters try to suss out the deal, Jason LaCanfora of NFL.com has some names to cross off the list:

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace will end his holdout and report to the team this weekend, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

The Steelers play Saturday night in Buffalo against the Bills and play in their final preseason game against the Carolina Panthers Aug. 30 in Pittsburgh.

Wallace had a one-year tender of $2.742 million that the Steelers offered him but Wallace has said he is looking for a long-term deal.  While Wallace held out, the Steelers signed wideout Antonio Brown to a six-year, $42.5 million contract.

Wallace made his first Pro Bowl last season after catching 72 passes for 1,193 yards and eight touchdowns.

Mike Bires of the Beaver County Times reports growing speculation among Steelers players that receiver Mike Wallace is about to show up at training camp. Wallace is 23 days into his holdout after being unhappy with the Steelers’ $2.7 million one-year tender and wanting a long term big-money deal.

“There’s a little buzz around the team that he’ll be coming back pretty soon,” fellow WR Emmanuel Sanders said. “I don’t know the exact date, but it’s looking pretty good.”

No one is expecting Wallace to show up this week as the Steelers wind down training camp. But players and coaches alike hope that Wallace may show up as early as next week when the Steelers start practicing at team headquarters in Pittsburgh.

“I haven’t heard anything factual or anything that sounds solid (about Wallace showing up), so we’ll continue to coach the guys who are here,” offensive coordinator Todd Haley said. “But I am looking forward to seeing him, hopefully soon rather than later.”

  • Report: Steelers may consider signing Plaxico Burress

With restricted free agent Mike Wallace still unwilling to sign his contract tender, Pittsburgh may turn to a familiar wide receiver for help at the position.

Plaxico Burress could be one possibility for the Steelers, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter Ed Bouchette writes.

“Plaxico Burress has a big back tax bill. He is unemployed. The #Steelers need a wide receiver to replace Mike Wallace. I’m told Burress wants ‘too much money’ but something has to give and it doesn’t look as though Wallace will give in any time soon. “

The 34-year-old Burress spent the first five seasons of his career with the Steelers. Last season with the Jets, Burress caught 45 passes for 612 yards and eight touchdowns.

Wallace, 26, made the Pro Bowl last season after catching 72 passes for 1,193 yards. He wants a long-term deal and has refused to sign his non-guaranteed offer for $2.742 million. There has reportedly been no contact between the two sides.

  • Mike Wallace contract update: Steelers offered WR more than Antonio Brown

The Pittsburgh Steelers actually offered more money to wide receiver Mike Wallace than they gave to Antonio Brown in a new contract on Friday — and Wallace still turned it down.

The Pittsburgh Tribune Review’s Mark Kaboly reported that the Steelers proposed giving Wallace — who is currently holding out of training camp and refusing to sign a one-year tender — a five-year, $50 million long-term contract. That’s more than the Steelers gave Brown in a five-year, $42.5 million deal. But Wallace turned down that offer.

Kaboly reported that this appears to be the end of the long-term negotiations between the Steelers and Wallace.

Now, the Steelers have had enough.

With the organization going out of their comfort zone and signing Antonio Brown to a 5-year, $42 million contract on Friday two years before his contract was up, the Steelers sent a strong and potent message to Wallace – don’t mess with us when it comes to contract negotiations.

There is no way Wallace will get the money he wants now from the Steelers now since Brown signed.

Kaboly speculated that Wallace could hold out until he absolutely has to sign the one-year tender — Nov. 13 — because there’s no financial advantage to him reporting to camp now and since negotiations between the sides appear to be finished.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac reported, meanwhile, that it would not be surprising if the Steelers tried to trade Wallace.

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace is required to show up to training camp by 4 pm Eastern on Wednesday. But signs are pointing to that he will not be making an appearance anytime soon reports the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Wallace has yet to sign his one-year tender worth $2.74 million that was offered in free agency. Signing the tender would allow Wallace to practice while he tries to work on a long-term deal with the team.

Wallace did not show up at any of the team’s offseason activities. The Steelers have a new offensive coordinator in Todd Haley and it is reported that Wallace did pick up his playbook.

“He’s a sharp guy,” Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said last month. “I’m sure he’s working at the learning element of it. But there’s no substitute for being here and being around your teammates and learning the nuances and learning from other people’s mistakes.”

Wallace caught 72 passes for 1,193 yards and eight touchdowns last season and made his first Pro Bowl.

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Mike Wallace remain deadlocked over the Pro-Bowl wide receiver’s contract situation, putting Wallace’s training camp participation in jeopardy.

The Sports Xchange’s Len Pasquarelli reported Friday that the two sides have made “no progress” and are barely even negotiating Wallace’s contract dispute. Wallace has held himself out of all official Steelers activities this offseason as the start of training camp looms. Players report to camp on July 25.

Earlier this offseason, the Steelers offered the restricted free agent Wallace a one-year, $2.7 million first-round tender, meaning that any other team interested would have to give up a first-round draft pick to the Steelers. No other team offered him a contract, and ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported in April that Wallace wouldn’t sign the tender “until he has to.”

The Steelers could have cut down their offer by about $2 million on June 15 since Wallace did not sign the tender, but they chose not to reduce the tender. The Steelers have said that Wallace remains in the team’s long-term plans, but the two sides appear far apart on how much he’s worth to keep him in Pittsburgh.

NFL.com’s Gregg Rosenthal expects negotiations will pick up as training camp gets closer.

Deadlines spur action, and the next deadline for the Steelers and Wallace is the start of training camp. We wouldn’t expect there to be much negotiating until the days leading up to camp. That’s just how negotiations like these usually go.

The 25-year-old Wallace is one of the best young wide receivers in the NFL. He caught 72 passes last season for 1,193 yards (a 16.6 yards-per-catch average) and eight touchdowns.

  • Report: Steelers’ Mike Wallace Wants Long-Term Deal, Considers Holdout

    Decrease fontDecrease font
    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

Mike Wallace won’t be playing anywhere but Pittsburgh in 2012, as the Friday deadline has come and gone for the restricted free agent to receive an offer sheet from another team. But according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Wallace is mulling a holdout — he’s prepared to sit out the Steelers’ offseason drills and even miss the start of training camp.

A source told Schefter that Wallace says he won’t sign his first-round tender “until he has to,” meaning he may well miss some or all of camp.

Wallace is unhappy with the $2.7 million tender he’s received and would like to work out a long-term deal for more money; Steelers president Art Rooney II also wants Wallace long-term, but the two sides haven’t been able to agree on a contract.

Wallace caught 72 passes for 1,193 yards and eight touchdowns last season. He was named a Pro Bowler for the first time.

  • Report: Steelers’ Mike Wallace Has No Interest In Franchise Tender, Wants Bigger Deal

    Decrease fontDecrease font
    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace was slapped with the franchise tag last month, so he’s not going anywhere — but according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, he has no interest in signing his tender.

If Wallace signed, he’d be agreeing to remain a Steeler for one year and $2.7 million; understandably, he’d much rather work out a long-term deal to earn far, far more than that. The Detroit Lions recently signed Calvin Johnson for seven years and $132 million, and the Arizona Cardinals inked Larry Fitzgerald last year for eight years and $120 million. Wallace thinks he’s in that elite class, and he might be right.

As a third-year pro last year, Wallace made 72 catches last season for 1,193 yards and eight touchdowns. He was a big reason that the Steelers were one of the NFL’s most explosive offensive teams last year.

Wallace was the Steelers’ third-round pick in the 2009 NFL draft out of Mississippi. He’s made 171 career catches for 3,206 yards. He was named a Pro Bowler for the first time in 2011.

  • Report: Mike Wallace Wants More Than Larry Fitzgerald’s $120 Million

    Decrease fontDecrease font
    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

Mike Wallace may be the best free agent left on the open market this spring, but for the money he’s seeking, he might not make for the best value. A source tells Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee that Wallace wants more than the eight-year, $120 million deal that Larry Fitzgerald signed last year with the Arizona Cardinals.

Wallace is certainly a blue-chip free agent — he made 72 catches last season for 1,193 yards and eight touchdowns, helping make the Steelers’ offense one of the most explosive in the NFL.

Barrows reports that the San Francisco 49ers have expressed interest in the wideout, but they’re daunted by the price tag. New England, Cincinnati and Baltimore are all unlikely to pay the high asking price as well, he writes.

Wallace, an Ole Miss alum, was the Steelers’ third-round pick in the 2009 NFL draft. He’s made 171 career catches for 3,206 yards; he was a Pro Bowler for the first time in 2011.

  • Report: Pittsburgh Steelers Do Not Plan To Franchise Tag Mike Wallace

    Decrease fontDecrease font
    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

The Pittsburgh Steelers do not intend to franchise tag wide receiver Mike Wallace, sources have told ESPN.

They instead intend to tender him, ESPN reports, which would allow another team to attempt to sign him to an offer sheet. The Steelers would have the right to match any offer, and if they decline, they could receive a first round pick in return.

Last week, Steelers general manager Mike Colbert said that he would like Wallace to stay with the club his entire career.

“We’re going to do everything we can to make sure Mike Wallace remains a Pittsburgh Steeler.” Colbert told ProFootballTalk, “And I think that’s Mike’s hope as well. Usually when you have two parties that share the same goal, it’s easier to achieve that goal.”

This past season he had 72 receptions for 1,193 yards and scored eight touchdowns. Throughout his career with the Steelers he has had 181 receptions for 3,206 yards and has scored 24 total touchdowns.

  • Colbert: We Want Mike Wallace To Finish Career In Pittsburgh

    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert said today that the team hopes to keep wide receiver Mike Wallace in Pittsburgh, according to ProFootballTalk.

“We’re going to do everything we can to make sure Mike Wallace remains a Pittsburgh Steeler.” Colbert told ProFootballTalk, “And I think that’s Mike’s hope as well. Usually when you have two parties that share the same goal, it’s easier to achieve that goal.”

Colbert indicated that there will be more roster cuts and restructuring in the salary cap so that the team can afford Wallace’s franchise number.

“We want to make sure Mike can finish his career with the Steelers. I’m very confident that Mike wants to finish his career with the Steelers and play with a great quarterback like Ben Roethlisberger. . . . We think he’s only scratched the surface in what he can do,” said Colbert.

Wallace has been with the team since his rookie season in 2009. He has been to one Pro-Bowl and won one AFC Championship with the Steelers. In 2009 he led the NFL in average yards per reception with 19.4.

This past season he had 72 receptions for 1,193 yards and scored eight touchdowns. Throughout his career with the Steelers he has had 181 receptions for 3,206 yards and has scored 24 total touchdowns.

  • Steelers S Ryan Clark Added To Pro Bowl Roster

    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark has been added to the 2012 Pro Bowl according to the Steelers’ official Twitter account.

Clark will be replacing Baltimore Ravens Ed Reed who will miss the game due to an injury.  In 2011, Clark totaled 100 tackles, one sack, and one interception.

The 32-year-old safety was forced to watch from the sidelines as the Steelers were eliminated by the Denver Broncos in the first round of the playoffs this season. Clark suffers from a rare blood disorder that makes it difficult for him to play at high altitudes. The game was held at Sports Authority Field at Mile High in Denver.

Along with Clark, six other Steelers were selected for the Pro Bowl including Ben Roethlisberger, wide receiver Mike Wallace, center Maurkice Pouncey (missing the game with an injury), safety Troy Polamalu (missing the game with an injury),  kick returner Antonio Brown and linebacker James Harrison.
