Former All-Star shortstop Miguel Tejada, who signed a minor league deal with the Baltimore Orioles in May, was released by the team at his request, reports MASNsports.com‘s Roch Kubatko on Twitter.

Kubatko reports that Tejada was hitting .259 with Baltimore’s Triple-A affiliate and hadn’t hit a home run.

Tejada, 38, played five of his 15 years in the major leagues with the Orioles, making the All-Star team three of those years. Tejada won the American League MVP award in 2002 while with the Oakland Athletics.

He last made an All-Star team in 2009 with the Houston Astros.

Last season, Tejada hit .239 with four home runs in 91 games with the San Francisco Giants.

Tejada was a San Francisco Giant for part of last season; he hasn’t played in a big-league game since Aug. 30. It’s unclear what the Orioles’ plan will be with the 37-year-old infielder.

“I don’t know Miguel that well,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. “I’ve heard good things about him from guys that were here with him, as far as a teammate and everything. Everybody speaks real highly of him. I don’t know him that well. I’ll lean on the people in extended, and we’ve got good people down there. I don’t know what the process or the plan is at this point.”

Tejada hit .239 last year with only four home runs and 26 RBIs. For his career, he’s hit .285 with 304 homers and 1,282 RBIs.

This is his third stint in Baltimore — he was previously an Oriole from 2004 to ’07, then again in 2010.
