Matt Cassel, who was cut by the Chiefs Thursday morning, has agreed to terms with the Vikings, as first reported by Jay Glazer.

Cassel had been linked to the Vikings since it became apparent that the Chiefs would cut him with two years left on his contract. He was scheduled to make a base salary of $7.5 million with the Chiefs this season.

The Kansas City Chiefs are growing disenchanted with Matt Cassel as their starting quarterback, Yahoo’s Jason Cole reported Monday.

    From Cole’s report:

“Look, there’s a big reason why they went after Peyton Manning as hard as they did this offseason,” said a source with knowledge of Chiefs president Scott Pioli’s thinking. “What you’re seeing from Cassel is pretty much what was expected. He’s a really nice backup, not a starter.”

Cole’s report suggests that if the Chiefs had a better alternative than Brady Quinn or Ricky Stanzi as backup, Cassel might have already been benched.

The Chiefs came into the 2012 season with sky-high expectations and expected to get back a healthy Cassel for a full season after he missed almost half of last year with a hand injury.

But Cassel’s start to the season thus far has been lackluster, at best. He has thrown just five touchdowns along with seven interceptions, and his quarterback rating sits at 70.4. The Chiefs, meanwhile, are mired in a 1-3 start and already sit two games behind the San Diego Chargers in the AFC West.

Cassel broke out in 2008 with the New England Patriots, when he replaced the injured Tom Brady for a full season. The Chiefs subsequently traded a second-round pick for Cassel and committed to him as their starter. He justified the hype in 2010, throwing 27 touchdowns to just seven interceptions while leading the Chiefs to the playoffs.

Despite this season’s struggles, Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel committed to Cassel as his starter.

“Even after he had those turnovers, he came back and drove the team down the field, so we think he’s capable,” Crennel said Monday. “We just have to get him to be more consistent.”

The Kansas City Chiefs may only have gone 7-9 this past season, but their quarterback is a hero nonetheless. Local television station KMBC-TV reports that Matt Cassel helped save a woman from a fire in her Loch Lloyd, Mo., home on Thursday night.

Cassel ran to the woman’s house in the gated community of Village of Loch Lloyd after his wife noticed smoke coming from the building. Witnesses told the TV station that Cassel knocked and rang the doorbell to get the woman’s attention then ran around the house until he saw her come out.

“I know Matt wouldn’t want this kind of attention, but I definitely think he was a hero last night,” one witness said.

“I just ran up to the house and alerted them,” Cassel said. “The real heroes are the firefighters.”

Fortunately, no one was injured in the fire.

Kansas City Chiefs coach Todd Haley clarified today that the “significant” injury which starting quarterback Matt Cassel suffered Nov. 13 against the Denver Broncos was a broken right hand, according to ESPN. The 29-year-old had surgery last week to repair the injury.

The former seventh-round pick was just 13 of 28 for 93 yards and one touchdown in last week’s loss, before being forced out with minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Though nine games this season, Cassel had posted a 76.6 quarterback rating and had thrown for 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Tyler Palko filled in for Cassel in the Chiefs’ final drive of the game, and is expected to start tonight against the New England Patriots. The 28-year-old completed five of six passes for 47 yards in the final minutes of the losing effort to Denver.

Last year Palko only attempted six passes but completed four for 35 yards.
