Report: Marcus Camby listed as doubtful following Friday’s MRI results

Knicks forward/center Marcus Camby is officially listed as doubtful after aggravating his plantar fasciitis during Thursday’s game against the Indiana Pacers. Camby left the arena on crutches and in a walking boot. He missed almost a month with plantar fasciitis, so a re-aggravation of the injury could keep Camby out for a week or two.

Camby had a result early on Friday, and while the results of the MRI are unknown, the New York Post’s Marc Berman reports that Camby is definitely listed as doubtful and will likely remain that way for about two weeks.

Knicks center Marcus Camby had an MRI during Sunday’s win over the Suns, which revealed the extent to his injury–Camby is suffering from plantar fasciitis in his left foot.

Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of thick tissue on the bottom of the foot. The injury is expected to keep Camby out of Wednesday’s game against the Bobcats and will likely be unavailable for Thursday’s game against the Heat.

Camby signed a three-year deal with the Knicks in July, and missed most of the preseason game with a calf injury. He has only played six games this season, sidelined with his calf injury and now a sore left foot.

Marcus Camby is expected to make his New York Knicks season debut on Friday when the team hosts the Dallas Mavericks, according to Al Iannazzone of Newsday.

Camby has yet to play a game during his second career stint with the Knicks. He sat out the preseason because of a strain in his left calf but is on target to participate in full-contact practices with the team on Wednesday and Thursday and the expectation is reportedly that he will play on Friday barring any other injuries or setbacks:

“You’re not going to just throw him out there,” Woodson said. “I like to see guys practice a little bit and just see how they feel once they’ve been banged around and hit the floor a few times. He hasn’t had the chance to do that.”

The return of Camby, who last played for the Knicks in 2002, means less pressure to play big minutes for center Tyson Chandler, and less minutes for the elder statesmen of the team, Kurt Thomas, the oldest player in the NBA, and Rasheed Wallace. Chandler, who is battling a host of health issues including strep throat and a bone bruise in his left knee, quantified his health at 75 percent on Nov. 5. His recent setbacks limited him to just 21 minutes in the Knicks’ blowout win on the road against the Philadelphia 76ers on Nov. 4.

The Knicks are now 3-0 and off to their best start since the 1999-00 season, a year after Camby joined the team.

The New York Knicks’ newly acquired backup center Marcus Camby is reportedly not close to returning from the calf strain that has kept him out off contact drills and practice for most of October.

According to head coach Mike Woodson, the prognosis is not overwhelmingly reassuring, as reported Tuesday afternoon from Marc Berman of The New York Post:

“I can’t say he’s getting close,’’ Woodson said. “He’s feeling better – put it that way. I’ll talk to (trainer) Roger (Hinds) and the training staff and see if there’s a chance of him coming back next week. I don’t know yet.’’

Camby suffered the strain Oct. 6 and it was initially expected that he’d miss only 7 – 10 days. Woodson said Camby probably wouldn’t join the team for their upcoming road trip to Syracuse-Albany-Montreal.

The Knicks have also yet to see Rasheed Wallace participate in a scrimmage. He is still reportedly working on his conditioning and is only participating in practices. Wallace signed with the Knicks at the beginning of October for a non-guaranteed contract but likely won’t be added to the official roster until he demonstrates that he’s conditioned and able to participate in scrimmages.

Despite an aging team that will likely deal with the injury bug all season, the Knicks will reportedly see the return of swingman Ronnie Brewer to practice on Wednesday or Thursday, according to Woodson. Brewer, who was acquired by the Knicks this off-season, had knee surgery in September and continues to rehab.

New York Knicks center Marcus Camby will be out a week to 10 days after straining his left calf, Newsday’s Al Iannazzone reported via Twitter on Sunday.

The injury means that Camby will miss the Knicks’ first two preseason games — their preseason opener against the Wizards in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 11 and an Oct. 13 game in Hartford, Conn., against the Boston Celtics.

The Knicks are hoping this isn’t the start of a trend for an aging roster. The 38-year-old Camby is part of the oldest team in the league’s history. Camby signed a three-year, $13.1 million deal. He told teammates that he was “surprised” by the length of the deal, according to the New York Daily News.

But if history is any indication, this might not be the only injury flare-up for Camby this season. In 16 seasons, Camby has played in more than 70 games only three times.

  • Knicks to become oldest team in NBA history with Rasheed Wallace signing

The New York Knicks are set to sign 38-year-old Rasheed Wallace and when they do they will officially become the oldest team in NBA history, according to The Wall Street Journal citing Stats LLC:

Assuming Wallace signs, their top 13 players would be, on average, 32 years and 240 days old—the oldest team in NBA history, according to Stats LLC. No team has ever gotten so much older from one season to the next.

The average age of a player on the Knicks has increased by almost five years from year to date. General manager Glen Grunwald called the current team “hungry veterans that know how to win.”

Still, despite all of the obvious aging that the team did this offseason, the news does come with perhaps a token of good luck. The team that was previously considered the oldest in league history was the 1997-98 Knicks, a team led by then head coach Jeff Van Gundy that beat the Miami Heat 3-2 in the first round of the playoffs en route to an appearance in the semi-finals against the Indiana Pacers. The following season, Marcus Camby and Kurt Thomas joined the team and they went to the NBA Finals.

  • Report: Marcus Camby, New York Knicks agree to three-year deal

Marcus Camby has agreed to sign a three-year, $13.2 million deal with the New York Knicks, Yahoo! Sports‘ Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Twitter Monday night. The deal is part of a sign-and-trade between the Knicks and Houston Rockets. In return, the Rockets will receive Toney Douglas, Jerome Jordan, Josh Harrellson and two second-round picks.

The Knicks had been reported as the front-runners for Camby after the Miami Heat signed free-agent guard Ray Allen over the weekend. The San Antonio Spurs and Brooklyn Nets had also expressed interest in signing Camby.

Because they executed a sign-and-trade with the Rockets, the Knicks can now sign point guard Jason Kidd, their other prized free-agent acquisition, to their full mid-level exception. The Knicks also intend to match the four-year, $28.8 million offer sheet that point guard Jeremy Lin recently signed with the Rockets.

The 38-year-old Camby played in 59 games last season with the Rockets and Portland Trail Blazers. He averaged 4.9 points and nine rebounds per game. Camby previously played with the Knicks from 1998-2002.

  • Marcus Camby cancels visit with Miami Heat, Knicks look to be front-runner

Marcus Camby canceled his scheduled visit with the Miami Heat on Saturday, a move that puts the Knicks out in front to land the free-agent center.

The Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson reported Saturday afternoon that Camby had postponed his meeting with the Heat after the team agreed to a contract with free-agent guard Ray Allen. The Heat gave Allen its full $3.1 million mid-level exception, and Camby now will wait and see if the Heat can complete a sign-and-trade deal with the Houston Rockets.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported that Camby is looking for a starting salary around $3 million and a multi-year contract. The Knicks could still offer Camby their mid-level exception — if they complete a sign-and-trade for point guard Jason Kidd with the Dallas Mavericks. Or they could work out a sign-and-trade with the Rockets and give Kidd, with whom they agreed to terms on a deal this week, their mid-level exception.

A crucial point in the Camby sweepstakes is that the Rockets are reportedly willing to execute a sign-and-trade with the Knicks but not the Heat because they are more interested in the Knicks’ potential package, ESPN’s Windhorst reported. That would mean Miami could only offer the veteran-minimum salary of $1.4 million, less than half of what the Knicks could give Camby.

The Miami Herald’s Jackson reported that the Heat have offered Joel Anthony, Norris Cole and a future first-round draft picks to the Rockets. The Knicks could send the expiring contract of point guard Toney Douglas, center Josh Harrelson, and the non-guaranteed contract of Dan Gadzuric, Jackson reported.

The San Antonio Spurs and Brooklyn Nets have also expressed interest in signing Camby. Camby averaged 4.9 points and nine rebounds per game last season with the Rockets and Portland Trail Blazers.

  • Report: Marcus Camby to visit Heat this weekend, three others interested

The Miami Heat may finally be in the market for a true center.

According to Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle, former Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Camby will travel to Miami this weekend.

Camby split last season with Portland and Houston, finishing the year with the Rockets averaging 7.1 points and 9.3 rebounds in 19 games.

The Heat normally have Chris Bosh or Joel Anthony on the court as the tallest player in a Heat uniform. With the addition of Camby, the 6-foot-11 veteran would benefit the Heat in the paint.

But Camby wouldn’t come cheap, as Fox Sports’ Chris Tomasson reports.

It’s unclear how Camby’s want for the $3 million exception would affect the Heat going after Ray Allen. The shooting guard is currently being courted by the Heat and Celtics, with Boston being able to pay Allen more money than the reigning champions.

UPDATE: Ken Berger of CBSSports.com has Camby being courted by four teams, with one perhaps out in front:

  • Report: Blazers Trade Center Marcus Camby To Rockets

    Decrease fontDecrease font
    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

What a deadline it’s been — first the Lakers got their point guard and it wasn’t Chris Paul, and now the Houston Rockets get their big man, and it’s not Pau Gasol. Yahoo! Sports’ Marc Spears says the Portland Trail Blazers have dealt veteran center Marcus Camby to Houston.

Camby, who turns 38 in a week, escapes the flaming wreckage that is a Blazers team mutinying against coach Nate McMillan. He joins a Rockets team that’s been dying to land one extra big man for the stretch run — Houston GM Daryl Morey tried and failed to land both Gasol and Nene this past offseason.

Camby started 40 games at center for Portland this season despite his advanced age. While his offensive production is pretty much shot (he’s shooting 41.6 percent and averaging 3.8 points in 22.4 minutes this year), he remains a tough, physical presence in the paint. The 16-year veteran is averaging 8.9 rebounds and 1.4 blocks.

The Rockets are currently 24-20 this season, clinging to the eighth and final spot in the West playoffs. The Camby acquisition may just be enough to keep them solidly in contention down the stretch.
