Magglio Ordonez is 38 years old and still out of work — and if you know your Spanish, you know that this tweet means he’s about ready to give up.

“Close to retiring,” Ordonez says.

Ordonez re-upped with the Detroit Tigers last winter for his seventh season with the team, signing a one-year deal worth $10 million. But he was tremendously disappointing in 2011, hitting just .255 with five homers, and as such, he’s yet to get an offer for 2012 from Detroit or anyone else.

If Ordonez walks away now, he’ll leave behind an impressive major league career — he’s compiled a .309 career average, 294 home runs and 1,236 RBIs in 15 seasons. He was the runner-up for AL MVP in 2007.

The future is still in doubt for 38-year-old Magglio Ordonez with the start of spring training right around the corner. The former Detroit Tigers outfielder is still looking for a job, but today he told Deportes Union Radio in his native Venezuela that he’s not looking for a minor-league contract.

“The market is tough for me,” Ordonez said. “But I’m working to continue my career.”

Ordonez re-signed with the Tigers last winter for one year and $10 million, and he was largely disappointing, hitting just .255 with five homers. The Tigers now have young outfielder Brennan Boesch waiting in the wings, which might mean no room left for Ordonez on the 2012 roster.

There may be a market for Ordonez elsewhere in the American League — the Oakland A’s are among the teams connected to the aging outfielder in rumors this winter.

Ordonez has a .309 career average, 294 home runs and 1,236 RBIs in his 15-year career. He was the runner-up for AL MVP in 2007.
