The San Diego Chargers were looking for a reliable backup quarterback for Philip Rivers, so they brought in journeyman Kyle Boller on Friday to see what he can do.

The experiment lasted a grand total of one day as Boller has decided to give up the game and retire, reports the Union-Tribune San Diego.

Boller spent eight seasons in the NFL. The 19th overall pick in the 2003 draft out of California, Boller threw 48 touchdowns, 54 interceptions and completed 56.7 percent of his passes in his career. He started 47 games going 20-27 in those contests. Boller spent last season with the Oakland Raiders throwing no touchdowns and three interceptions.

The San Diego Chargers are set to add another quarterback to the mix at training camp.

According to a report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Kyle Boller will be the newest addition to the AFC West team.

Boller appeared in two games and started one for the Raiders last season. He went 15-of-28 for 161 yards, zero touchdowns and three interceptions.

Entering his ninth season, Boller will compete against Charlie Whitehurst and Jarrett Lee for right to backup Philip Rivers next season.
