Sherman, former head coach of the Texas A&M Aggies and then the Green Bay Packers, taught Philbin in prep school and the two previously coached together in Green Bay. The 57-year-old led the Packers to a 57-39 overall record but was fired in 2005 after a 4-12 season. It was Sherman’s first losing season in Green Bay. He had led Texas A&M to a 25-25 overall record in four seasons with the squad, and was fired this December after the Aggies posted a 6-6 record.
Coyle has 35 years of experience coaching. He spent 11 seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, nine of which he served as the defensive backs coach.
The Dolphins hired Philbin last week after firing Tony Sparano after his third consecutive losing season in Miami.
