The Sacramento Kings announced Monday that head coach Keith Smart will be retained for the 2012-13 season, according to president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie.

“Keith has done a terrific job of taking control of the direction of the team,” explained Petrie. “He is active, engaged and working hard to develop our young players along with a complimentary style of play.”

Smart took over in January after Paul Westphal was fired.

Keith Smart has agreed to a two-year contract with the Sacramento Kings, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports. Smart is guaranteed through the 2012-13 season.

It was announced earlier Thursday that Paul Westphal had been terminated as head coach of the Kings. Westphal was in charge since 2009-10, and he failed to win 25 games in either of his first two seasons.

Smart was an assistant with the team last season, a year after being fired by Golden State after only a season as head coach.
