The Oakland Raiders released Kamerion Wimbley today, cutting ties with the 28-year-old defensive end just one year into a five-year contract, according to the Associated Press.

Wimbley signed a $48 million deal through 2015 with the Raiders last summer. By cutting that deal short today, the Raiders save $4.5 million in guaranteed money for the 2012 season, plus a boatload more down the road.

“We tried to make it work all afternoon, but just too many constraints with [the] Raiders’ cap situation,” agent Joe Linta told the AP. “[Raiders GM] Reggie McKenzie is a real pro, and we appreciate how he handled it.”

Wimbley, who was the Cleveland Browns’ first-round pick in the 2006 draft, had seven sacks last season for the Raiders and 16 overall in his two seasons donning the silver and black.

Cutting Wimbley loose is just the latest in a series of cost-cutting moves under McKenzie this offseason. The Raiders have now cut seven players, including five starters, from the team that went 8-8 last year.

The Oakland Raiders will cut linebacker, Kamerion Wimbley if he does not agree to restructure his contract, according to NFL.com.

The 28-year-old is slotted to make $11 million this season, but more importantly his presence on the roster this year triggers $19 million in future guaranteed money. The Raiders have been looking to get back under the salary cap this offseason, and a restructure of Wimbley’s deal may be necessary to make that happen.

For the Raiders, Wimbley is one of the few pass rushing options they have, however the team’s new general manager, Reggie McKenzie , needs to trim the amount of money spent by the team on their front seven.

Last season Wimbley contributed 63 tackles, seven sacks, and one interception for the Raiders. Over the course of his career he has had 368 tackles, 42.5 sacks and two interceptions.
