The Texas Rangers declined to include the minor-league’s best prospect in off-season trade offers, but they won’t start the 2013 season with Jurickson Profar at the major-league level.

Gerry Fraley of The Dallas Morning News reports the Rangers’ decision to keep rookie Leury Garcia as their Opening Day utility infielder means Profar will open the season with Triple-A Round Rock.

The move is not unexpected and has more to do with the Rangers wanting Profar, a middle infielder, to play on a daily basis, rather than his disappointing spring training numbers.

Profar made his Major League debut with the Rangers in early September last season, hitting a home run in his first career at-bat. He played in a total of nine games after the rosters expanded and was included on the RAngers’

One thing’s for sure: Jurickson Profar didn’t waster his first chance in the big leagues. The 19-year-old shortstop hit a home run in his first at bat this afternoon, just two days after being called up from AA Frisco by the Texas Rangers.

Facing a 2-1 count against Cleveland Indians righty Zach McAllister, Profar smacked a 388-foot shot that sailed over the right field wall. Profar is the youngest player in the Major Leagues this season, among the youngest ever to hit a home run in an MLB game, and the youngest player ever to play for the Texas Rangers.

He is ranked as the #4 overall prospect in Baseball, according to MLB.com, which also has video of his home run.

In what shouldn’t qualify as much of a surprise, the Texas Rangers will bring up 19-year-old shortstop Jurickson Profar on Saturday when rosters expand to 40, reports Gerry Fraley of the Dallas Morning News.

Many prospects have been given their first tastes of the big leagues in a September call-up, and Profar’s promotion could signal the start of a long major league career.

Profar is ranked as the top position prospect in baseball by Baseball America and and the No. 2 position prospect by MLB.com, behind Baltimore Oriole third baseman Manny Machado. A native of Curacao, the 5’11″, 165-pound Profar is hitting .281 with 14 home runs and 62 RBIs for Double-A Frisco.
