The Washington Nationals have reached one-year agreements with starting pitchers Jordan Zimmermann and Tom Gorzelanny in order to avoid arbitration, according to the team’s official public relations account.

Zimmermann went 8-11 last season with a 3.18 ERA and 124 strikeouts in 161.1 innings pitched in his first year in return form Tommy John surgery. The 25-year-old is considered one of the best young starting pitchers in the league and will likely be slotted third in the Nationals’ talented young rotation.

Gorzelanny posted a 4.03 ERA in 30 appearances for the Nationals in 2011. While the left-hander has traditionally served as a starting pitcher during his time with the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Chicago Cubs, it is believed that he will pitch mostly out of the bullpen for the Nationals in 2012. Last season he started 15 games, going 4-6 on the year.
