[Update: 3:45 p.m. EST] Johnny Manziel went to Twitter to describe the Longhorn tattoo on his stomach as a “fake.” He also got into a Twitter war with several critics about the subject.

How will Johnny Manziel’s legendary status on the Texas A&M campus — at least during football activities, if not classes — withstand a shirtless spring break photo that’s gone viral?

The quarterback who became the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy while leading the Aggies to an impressive SEC debut that included a road upset of No. 1 Alabama, may have some explaining to do. A photo depicts Johnny Football enjoying his spring break in Cabo San Lucas while wearing a Texas Longhorns tattoo revealed on his rib cage below his left pec.

If the photo and tattoo are legit, Manziel will likely catch some flak from Aggies who love to hate their intrastate rivals and former Big 12 partners. After all, the lyrics of Texas A&M’s fight song specifically mention the Longhorns:

Hullabaloo, Caneck! Caneck!

Hullabaloo, Caneck! Caneck!

Good-bye to Texas University

So long to the Orange and the White…

The eyes of Texas are upon you…

That is the song they sing so well

So good-bye to Texas University…

Manziel’s Texas A&M media guide bio makes mention of his former infatuation with the Longhorns, before he wound up playing quarterback in College Station:

Manziel, whom A&M coach Kevin Sumlin hasn’t yet made available for interviews this season, grew up a Texas Longhorns fan (he often sported UT gear around Tyler), but Texas didn’t heavily recruit him. In fact Florida coach Will Muschamp told his players during halftime of this year’s A&M game that UT, where Muschamp had previously served as defensive coordinator, only wanted Manziel as a defensive back.

Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel told reporters prior to receiving the Davey O’Brien Quarterback Award Monday that he’s taking all classes online this semester and only comes to campus about once a week.

Manziel said the commotion that followed his breakthrough season as Heisman Trophy winner during Texas A&M’s inaugural SEC season was unexpected. Too many students asking for photo opps and autographs made class environments nearly impossible for other students and professors.

“I didn’t think anything of it, and it kind of turned into a little more of a big deal than I thought,” Manziel said, according to the Associated Press.

His online course load meets NCAA and university regulations. Manziel and his parents met with athletic director Eric Hyman and Texas A&M compliance officials regarding his on-campus challenges and his off-season life that included trips to the Super Bowl and the NBA All-Star Game.

“I feel like by now if I was doing something wrong, compliance would have definitely figured something out,” Manziel said

  • Oklahoma DC Mike Stoops: Johnny Manziel only needs to avoid jail and Twitter

    Decrease fontDecrease font

Oklahoma defensive coordinator Mike Stoops thinks the only things that might get in the way of Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel adding more Heismans to trophy case are the law and social media.

While appearing on Oklahoma City sports talk radio station WWLS on Friday, Stoops was asked what it would take to stop Manziel if the Sooners were to run into him in a 2014 bowl game. With visions of Manziel rushing for 229 yards, four touchdowns and a Cotton Bowl-record 516 total yards still fresh in his mind, Stoops complimented the freshman phenom — while jokingly suggesting two things that might slow “Johnny Football” down.

“…I’ve seen a lot of football players play a lot of different styles with guys, but never seen anything like that in my whole life. I mean, I’ve never felt as defenseless as we were the other night, that’s for sure.

“You know, any time you can go for 500 yards against a team like Alabama, what they did to Notre Dame, that tells you. You don’t need to say anything else. On the road at Alabama, that guy was phenomenal that night.

“He just creates so many problems for your defense, and he knows what those problems are. And he understands them very well.

“They’re gonna be tough to deal with. If they can keep him out of jail or keep him eligible, he’s gonna be pretty good. (Stoops lets loose a single chuckle.)

“If they can keep him off the Twitter, he might win three or four Heismans. He’ll have that type of ability.”

Stoops was referring to Manziel’s arrest for disorderly conduct by fighting, failure to identify and having a fake driver’s license in June and some controversial post-Cotton Bowl victory photos of him celebrating at a Dallas bar and a casino.

The Associated Press released its All-America team on Tuesday, and the results weighed heavily towards the Crimson Tide. Four Alabama players made the cut; no other school had more than one player selected to the team. Among the four Alabama players was senior center Barrett Jones who made the first team for the second time. He was joined by Alabama guard Chance Warmack, linebacker C.J. Mosley and cornerback Dee Milliner.

Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel became the first freshman to make the team at quarterback shortly after becoming the first freshman to win the Heisman trophy on Saturday. Collin Klein, a Heisman finalist from Kansas State, was the second-team quarterback. The other finalist, linebacker Manti Te’o, also made the team and was Notre Dame’s first defensive player to make the team in 10 years when defensive back Shane Walton did so in 2002.

A panel of 16 AP college football poll voters selected the team.

Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel won the 78th Heisman Trophy on Saturday night, becoming the first freshman player to win college football’s most prestigious award.

Manziel, 20, is the second Texas A&M player to win the Heisman and the first in 45 years. John David Crow won the award in 1957.  Manti Te’o, Notre Dame’s senior linebacker who won the Bednarik, Maxwell and Walter Camp National Player of the Year awards, finished second and Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein finished third.

Manziel, who became known as “Johnny Football”, passed for 3,419 yards and 24 touchdowns and also rushed for 1,181 yards and 19 more scores leading the Aggies to a 10-2 record this season, including a 29-24 defeat over then-No. 1 Alabama. His 4,600 yards of total offense broke the Southeastern Conference single-season record held by Cam Newton, who won the Heisman in 2010.

History could be made Saturday night as a freshman could win The Heisman Trophy for the first time when the award is given out.

Johnny Manziel, a redshirt freshman quarterback from Texas A&M, Notre Dame senior linebacker Manti Te’o and Collin Klein, a senior quarterback from Kansas State are the finalists for the trophy that was announced on ESPN Monday night.

Te’o has led the undefeated and top-ranked Fighting Irish into the BCS Championship game against No. 2 Alabama. Te’o had 103 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and seven interceptions this season.

Manziel completed 68 percent of his passes for 3,419 yards with 24 touchdowns. Manziel also ran for 1,181 yards and 19 touchdowns. He led his team to a victory over then-No. 1 Alabama, accounting for the Crimson Tide’s only loss this season. The Aggies (10-2) will play Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl.

Klein completed 66.2 percent of his passes for 2,485 yards, 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions for Kansas State, who went 11-1 this year. The Wildcats will play Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl.

All three players are also finalists for the Maxwell Award, awarded to the nation’s best all-around player.

  • Redshirt freshman Johnny Manziel named Texas A&M’s starting QB

Texas A&M announced on Wednesday that coach Kevin Sumlin has named redshirt freshman Johnny Manziel as the Aggies’ starting quarterback, succeeding Ryan Tannehill.

“Johnny has performed the best at this stage and we will proceed until the season opener with him getting the first-team reps,” Sumlin said in the school’s press release. “My policy is simple, really: The best player plays. Competition is a great thing and we need more competition at all of our positions. All of our quarterbacks have competed well, and I expect them to continue to push Johnny.”

According to Brent Zwerneman of the San Antonio Express-News, Manziel’s standout performance in Saturday’s scrimmage probably won him the job. Zwerneman wrote on Saturday: “Manziel likely now holds an edge based on his ability a week into camp to make quick reads and get rid of the ball faster than the other two.”

Third-year sophomores Jameill Showers, Tannehill’s backup in 2011, and Matt Joeckel were the other two in the QB competition.

Given Sumlin’s track record at Houston, Manziel likely is going to get the chance to put up significant numbers in A&M’s new offense. Manziel’s recent arrest apparently did not affect his standing.
