The Toronto Maple Leafs have agreed to terms with defenseman John-Michael Liles on a four-year, $15.5 million extension, according to the Associated Press.

The 31-year-old Liles is in the final year of his current deal, making $4.2 million. He was expected to earn a modest raise in his next contract, but instead the nine-year veteran accepted a discount to remain in Toronto.

“You could say that you leave some on the table,” Liles told the AP. “Maybe I did, maybe I didn’t … but I’m looking at it as I was negotiating a contract to stay in a place I wanted to be and play on a team I wanted to play on and live in a city I wanted to live in.”

Liles has four goals and 21 points in 34 games this season. He’s been sidelined since Dec. 22 with a concussion but is expected to make his return after the All-Star break.

Liles spent his first eight seasons in the Colorado Avalanche organization. The Avs traded him to Toronto on June 24 for a 2012 second-round draft pick.
