The Baltimore Orioles have signed veteran right-hander Joel Pineiro to a minor league contract, according to Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun.

Piniero reported today to the Orioles’ extended spring training complex in Sarasota, Fla., where he will work out with club trainers until he is ready for game action. He’s likely to begin his season with the Triple-A Norfolk Tides.

Piniero fills a void in Baltimore, as right-handed long reliever Alfredo Simon went from the O’s to the Cincinnati Reds via the waiver wire earlier this month.

“We lost Simon, he was the candidate to be the right-handed long guy,” Orioles VP Dan Duquette said. “And so we needed a long man.”

Pineiro went 7-7 with a 5.13 ERA for the Los Angeles Angels last year. He caught on this spring with the Philadelphia Phillies, who released him after he allowed five runs (three earned) on seven hits in six Grapefruit League innings.

For his career, Pineiro is 104-93 with a 4.41 ERA. He turns 34 in September.

The Philadelphia Phillies have released starting pitcher Joe Pineiro, according to MLBTradeRumours.com

The 33-year old Pineiro signed a minor league deal with the Phillies this past January which could have earned him $1.5 million on the MLB roster.

Through 24 games with the Los Angeles Angels in 2011, Pineiro went 7-7 with 5.13 ERA.

Pineiro had previously pitched for the Mariners, Red Sox, and Cardinals.

Joel Pineiro has a new gig — the journeyman hurler has agreed to a minor-league contract with the Phildelphia Phillies. The deal includes an invitation to big-league spring training, according to ESPN’s Jayson Stark.

The 33-year-old right-hander spent the last two seasons with the Angels. He had statistically one of the worst seasons of his career in 2011, going 7-7 with a 5.13 ERA. He spent much of the season on the disabled list due to shoulder tightness.

Pineiro is unlikely to crack the Phillies’ five-man rotation — he’ll be hard-pressed to beat out the Phils’ powerhouse lineup of Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels, Joe Blanton and Vance Worley. If he makes the team, Pineiro will likely be relegated to spot starts and mop-up work out of the bullpen.

Pineiro had previously pitched for the Mariners, Red Sox and Cardinals. He has a career record of 104-93 and a 4.41 ERA in 12 major league seasons.

The Philadelphia Phillies have agreed to a minor league contract with starting pitcher Joel Pineiro, according to ESPN.

Pineiro went just 7-7 last season with a 5.13 ERA for the Los Angeles Angels. The 33-year-old starter was much more effective in 2010 when he posted a 10-7 record with a 3.84 ERA for Los Angeles.

It is unknown what role Pineiro might play, as the Phillies rotation is already jam packed with the likes of Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels, Joe Blanton and Vance Worley.

If he makes the major league club, it will be the fifth team he has played for in his 12-year-career.
