Red Sox closer Joel Hanrahan leaves game with injury

Boston Red Sox closer Joel Hanrahan left Monday’s outing against the Minnesota Twins with right forearm tightness.

Hanrahan left the game one pitch after giving up a game-tying, ninth-inning home run to Twins second baseman Brian Dozier. After Hanrahan’s first pitch to the next batter, first baseman Justin Morneau, Red Sox manager John Farrell came out to the mound with the training staff and took Hanrahan out of the game.

The Red Sox said later that Hanrahan has right forearm tightness and would be re-evaluated on Tuesday.

Hanrahan’s injury came just hours after the Red Sox placed reliever Andrew Bailey on the disabled list with biceps soreness. Bailey had been the team’s closer in Hanrahan’s absence.

The 31-year-old Hanrahan was recently activated off the DL. Hanrahan, who was acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates last offseason, has struggled immensely in 7 1/3 innings pitched this season. He has a 9.82 ERA, 2.18 WHIP and just five strikeouts to six walks.

Boston Red Sox closer Joel Hanrahan is dealing with soreness in his right hamstring that has contributed to his early struggles, manager John Farrell revealed on Sunday.

Farrell called the injury “manageable” and said he plans to sit Hanrahan for the next few days.

The 31-year-old right-hander, acquired in a trade with the Pirates during the offseason, has allowed six runs in 4.2 innings for an 11.57 ERA in his first six appearances, giving up three home runs and issuing five walks.

He allowed five runs in the ninth inning in a blown save against the Orioles on Wednesday.

From The Boston Globe‘s Scott Lauber:

Hanrahan said he told the Red Sox’ training staff, not Farrell or pitching coach Juan Nieves, after initially tweaking his hamstring while throwing a slider during a scoreless ninth inning April 3 at Yankee Stadium. He dealt with the same injury in the same spot last season with the Pirates and missed only a few games. Based on that experience, and with the Red Sox having several days off early in the season, Hanrahan hoped he would be able to pitch through the discomfort.

If necessary, Andrew Bailey will be used in the closer role today against the Rays. Farrell said it’s prematrue to determine if Hanrahan will have to go on the disabled list, a course of action Hanrahan was able to avoid last season when his hamstring flared.

“That guy that’s been out there the last couple games, that’s not Joel Hanrahan,” Hanrahan said. “I know that. The fans here, they don’t know much because they haven’t seen me pitch much. But that’s not the way that I pitch. I feel like once I get my legs underneath me, I can get back to where I was.”

  • Report: Joel Hanrahan will be Red Sox closer, not Andrew Bailey

Any potential closer controversy caused by the addition of Joel Hanrahan to the Red Sox was quickly quelled, according to the Boston Globe’s Pete Abraham. Hanrahan was part of a six-player trade between the Red Sox and Pirates that was finalized on Wednesday. The deal sent Hanrahan and shortstop Brock Holt to Boston, and first baseman/outfielder Jerry Sands, reliever Mark Melancon and minor leaguers Stolmy Pimentel and Ivan De Jesus to Pittsburgh.

The Red Sox acquired reliever Andrew Bailey from Oakland at the end of the 2011 season to replace closer Jonathan Papelbon. Bailey missed most of the 2012 season with a thumb injury, and according to Abraham, Hanrahan will be the team’s closer in 2013:

Bailey, 28, appeared in 19 games for Boston last season and had six saves and a 7.04 ERA. Hanrahan, 31, had 36 saves and a 2.72  ERA with the Pirates in 2012.

The Boston Red Sox finalized a trade on Wednesday to send reliever Mark Melancon and three prospects to the Pittsburgh Pirates for closer Joel Hanrahan and infielder Brock Holt. Reports of the two sides nearing an agreement emerged on Saturday, with details of the players involved outside of Hanrahan unknown.

Boston will trade three young players to Pittsburgh, the latter two of whom were acquired in the August blockbuster that sent Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez to the Dodgers: 19-year-old pitcher Yankory Pimentel, who saw limited action in the rookie league last season; 25-year-old outfielder Jerry Sands, who owns a .244 average in 221 career MLB at-bats but hit 26 home runs in Triple A last season; and 25-year-old infielder Ivan De Jesus, a .205 career hitter in 73 MLB at-bats and .298 hitter in eight minor league seasons.

Holt posted a combined .344 average in Double A and Triple A last season before being called up to the Pirates in September. Melancon was expected to serve as Boston’s setup man last season after being acquired from the Astros, but pitched to a 6.20 ERA in 45 innings and was even sent to the minors between April and June.

Hanrahan, meanwhile, has been named an All-Star in each of the past two seasons since becoming a full-time closer. He posted a combined 2.24 ERA and 128 strikeouts in 128.1 innings in those seasons, with 76 saves in 84 opportunities.

  • Report: Red Sox close to completing trade for Pirates closer Joel Hanrahan

The Boston Red Sox are “moving toward” acquiring Pittsburgh Pirates closer Joel Hanrahan, ESPN.com’s Gordon Edes is reporting.

Hanrahan, a 31-year-old right-hander, saved 36 games for the Pirates last season and 40 in 2011, the first year in which he served as a full-time closer. With a fastball that reaches the upper-90s, he struck out more than a batter per inning in 2012.

The Red Sox could tab Hanrahan as their closer in 2013 and shift Andrew Bailey into a set-up role in hopes of solidifying their bullpen, but it is unclear what the Pirates need in exchange to complete the deal, according to Edes.

Hanrahan saved a total of 76 games over the last two seasons for the Pirates and is a year away from free agency. With incumbent closer Andrew Bailey still a question mark after a season in which he was injured for most of the year, then pitched ineffectively, it makes sense that the Sox would explore bullpen upgrades.

It is unclear what the Pirates would be getting back in return. Pittsburgh has been looking for pitching, primarily starters, but just came to terms with Francisco Liriano.

One major league source said Pittsburgh is seeking a “significant return” for Hanrahan, an All-Star in each of the last two seasons. He earned $4.1 million in 2012 and can expect a significant bump in salary arbitration, to close to $7 million.

CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman reports that the deal is likely for multiple players.
