Free-agent forward Jermaine O’Neal has agreed to terms with the Phoenix Suns, the Arizona Republic reports.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but the Suns had been offering a one-year deal worth the league minimum.

An oft-injured six-time All-Star, O’Neal played with the Boston Celtics the past two seasons, only playing in 49 games.  Last season, he started 24 games averaging five points and 5.4 rebounds a game. He underwent surgery on his left wrist in March.

O’Neal, 33, has averaged 13.7 points and 7.4 rebounds for his career.

  • Report: Lakers could sign Antawn Jamison and Jermaine O’Neal

The Lakers may not be done getting older. A week after landing 38-year-old point guard Steve Nash, the Los Angeles Lakers are close to agreeing terms with power forward Antawn Jamison and center Jermaine O’Neal, according to a tweet from Yahoo! Sports‘ Marc J. Spears.

The moves will add veteran depth to a frontcourt that includes Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum, and playoff standout Jordan Hill. However, some of those players may be gone soon to make way for Dwight Howard, who the Lakers may trade for according to reports earlier today.

Jamison, 36, has played the last two and a half seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers. After appearing in the playoffs with the Dallas Mavericks and Washington Wizards for six out of seven years between 2003 and 2010, Jamison has been absent from the postseason since. He averaged 17.2 points and 6.3 rebounds a game last season while shooting 40.3% from the field.

O’Neal, 33, spent the last two seasons with the Boston Celtics, though his time in Beantown was marred by consistent injury problems. O’Neal appeared in only 49 regular season games as a Celtic, though he did step in to the starting center position during Boston’s 2011 playoff run. O’Neal averaged 5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game in 2011-2012 before a left wrist injury in March shut him down for the remainder of the Celtics’ season. He was subsequently released.

Fresh off signing two-time MVP Steve Nash to a three-year deal worth approximately $27 million, the Los Angeles Lakers are now reportedly looking to upgrade their frontcourt by signing one of three players on the market: the Cavs’ Antawn Jamison; Elton Brand, who was recently amnestied by the Philadelphia 76ers; and the Celtics’ Jermaine O’Neal, according to Dave McMenamin of ESPNLosAngeles.com:

[A]ppearing on the Lakers’ “short list” of names they are hoping to add to the roster for the veteran’s minimum are Antawn Jamison, Elton Brand and Jermaine O’Neal, according to a source familiar with the team’s thinking.

Jamison is arguably the most coveted of the three, as McMenamin reports that Brooklyn, Golden State and Charlotte are also trying to land the 36-year-old forward, and the Nets are reportedly his preference. Though he shot a career-low 40-percent from the field last season for the Cavs, he proved that he can still be effective, averaging 17.2 points and 6.3 rebounds. The 2009-10 season was his  first with the Cavs, who were then coached by Lakers current head coach Mike Brown.

Brand, meanwhile, will reportedly also be pursued by Dallas.

O’Neal played in only 25 games last season for the Celtics before requiring wrist surgery. McMenamin reports that the Lakers think signing him could be worth it if he can be healthy for training camp.

  • Report: Celtics’ Jermaine O’Neal Needs Wrist Surgery, Done For Season

Boston Celtics center Jermaine O’Neal will undergo season-ending surgery on his left wrist, according to Chris Forsberg of ESPN Boston.

O’Neal, who also played with a fractured wrist against the Miami Heat in the playoffs last season, has a chronic degenerative wrist condition, and he aggravated the wrist when he fell during a Feb. 20 loss to the Dallas Mavericks. The wrist has not responded to immobilization or physical therapy.

The Celtics signed O’Neal to a two-year contract worth $12 million in the summer of 2010. This injury effectively ends O’Neal’s time with the C’s — he will finish out the two years having missed far more games (99) than he played (49).

“Jermaine worked hard to get himself in condition to play this season despite his ongoing wrist issues,” Celtics president Danny Ainge said. “He played through pain the entire year and gave us all he could, but unfortunately after the fall against Dallas there simply wasn’t anything else he could do. We appreciate his contributions to our team over the last two years.”

O’Neal was averaging 5.0 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game for the Celtics this season. All told in 16 NBA seasons, he’s compiled career averages of 13.7, 7.4 and 1.9.

  • Report: Jermaine O’Neal Wants Out Of Boston, Eyeing Miami Heat

    Decrease fontDecrease font

The Boston Celtics’ corps of big men is already in disarray due to a slew of recent injuries, but things could only get worse — sources tell Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports that veteran center Jermaine O’Neal wants a buyout.

Rather than let him go and lose him for nothing, the C’s have been looking to deal O’Neal before today’s 3 p.m. deadline. One name they’ve been connected with in recent rumors is New Orleans big man Chris Kaman, but the salary cap math is tricky there — O’Neal is making $6.2 million this season, and Kaman is over $14 mil. Even if you throw in the $3 million from the injured and expiring Chris Wilcox, it doesn’t work.

It would behoove Celtics president Danny Ainge to trade O’Neal as soon as possible, rather than let him walk — if he were a free man, O’Neal would almost certainly go to Miami and be reunited with Dwyane Wade and Erik Spoelstra on the Heat.

Time’s ticking for Ainge. The C’s exec made a similar deal with an expiring big man last year, trading Kendrick Perkins to Oklahoma City at the 11th hour. He just might do it again.
