Mavericks’ Jason Kidd Wants To Be A General Manager After Playing Career

Jason Kidd is still unsure what the future holds after his contract with the Dallas Mavericks expires this summer, but he did reveal one interesting little tidbit today — after his playing days are done for good, he’d like to be a general manager.

“I would like to go upstairs,” Kidd told Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld. “I’d like to be the person who puts all of the pieces together. We’ll see if that works out.”

Kidd turned 39 last month, and while he’s currently the starting point guard for the defending champions, he’s clearly on the decline. His 18th NBA season has been his least productive one by far, as the veteran has averaged just 5.9 points and 5.2 assists per game. He’s a free agent this summer, and all of his three options — stay in Dallas, go elsewhere, or end his playing days — are on the table.

“We’ll see what happens,” Kidd said. “[I’ll go to] whatever team wants me. I would love to end my career in Dallas, but we’ll see what happens this offseason.

“I want to keep playing until I can’t play anymore, which could be very soon. The big thing for me is I love playing the game. I love doing whatever I can to help my team win. Until that point comes – the end – I’ll keep trying to do that.”

Dallas Mavericks point guard Jason Kidd has been fined $25,000 by the NBA for his recent criticism of NBA officials, according to NBC Sports.

“We don’t get the benefit of the whistle,” Kidd said yesterday. “I don’t think we’re looked upon as champions, but that’s a whole other story. Dirk (Nowitzki) should live at the line if they would call it the way it’s supposed to be. But, he doesn’t.”

The reigning NBA champions are 23-17 this season, which currently ranks them sixth overall in the Western Conference, and third overall in the Southwest Division. They have lost six of their past 10 games.

Kidd, 38, is playing five less minutes per game than he did last year. He is currently averaging 5.1 poitns and 5.6 assists per contest. Last year he averaged 7.9 points and 8.2 assists.

The Dallas Mavericks have their point guard back — after a six-game absence, Jason Kidd is returning tonight to face the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Kidd had been sidelined since Jan. 27, when he suffered a right calf strain in a win over the Utah Jazz. He also suffered from a back injury earlier this season.

Kidd is playing 28.7 minutes per game for the Mavericks, a career low. He’s averaging just 4.1 points, 5.1 assists and 4.5 rebounds. He turns 39 next month.

The Mavs are 15-11 this season; they’ve gone 8-8 with Kidd in the lineup and 7-3 without him.

Dallas Mavericks point guard Jason Kidd will be sidelined for at least a week with a strained calf sustained Friday night, according to ESPNDallas.com.

“It’s not real serious, but it’s going to take a while,” coach Rick Carlisle said Sunday, according to ESPN. “We’re going to say that it’s going to be at least a week and it’s probably going to be longer.”

Kidd, 38, has already missed three times more games this season due to injury than he did last year.

“He’s been so consistent just being out there on the floor,” Carlisle said. “Really, I don’t remember him sitting a game for injury since I’ve been here. We’ve rested him a couple of times, but it may have been a couple things where he was banged up slightly.”

Kidd is averaging just 4.1 points and 5.1 assists for the struggling Mavericks this season.
