The Jacksonville Jaguars have had no discussions about a contract extension with Maurice Jones-Drew, according to the Florida Times-Union.

Jones-Drew currently has two years remaining on a five-year, $31 million deal he signed in 2009. He is still owed $9.4 million on that deal. There has been speculation, however, that Jones-Drew would like to rework his deal prior to the 2012 season.

The Jaguars running back has not reported to a voluntary offseason workout program, however neither Jones-Drew nor his agent has indicated that he is holding out for a deal.

Last season the 27-year-old led the NFL in rushing with 1,606 yards. He also recorded eight touchdowns on the ground and three through the air.

Jacksonville Jaguars defensive tackle Terrance Knighton will miss the first three months of team workouts while recovering from eye surgery, according to NFL.com. Knighton sustained the injury outside a Jacksonville night club earlier this month.

Reports of the incident vary, but one suggests that Knighton and others were kicked out of the night club for fighting, and they threatened to return and “shoot people.”

Still, the Jaguars are sticking by Knighton and plan to monitor him during his absence.

Jaguars defensive tackle Terrance Knighton’s eye surgery went well and he plans on making a full recovery, according to The Florida Times Union.

“Thank you everyone for the support,” Knighton tweeted, making his first public comments since he suffered the injury Sunday morning. “I plan on making a full recovery. Thank you fans, family and friends.”

Knighton suffered a serious injury, but the prognosis seems positive and should not be career threatening. The injury reportedly came after a bar fight between his friend and a stranger.

“It wasn’t his altercation; it wasn’t his argument,” his agent, Tony Fleming said. “Terrance was not involved in the altercation. His friend was involved.”

Knighton is entering his fourth season with the Jaguars after being drafted in the third round in 2009. Last season he had 29 tackles. During his career with the Jaguars he has had 108 tackles, one forced fumble, and 5.5 sacks.

  • Jaguars Coach Mike Mularkey ‘Excited’ To Work With Blaine Gabbert In 2012

    Decrease fontDecrease font
    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

There have been numerous rumors this offseason about the future of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ coaching situation, ranging from a potential first-round draft pick at QB to the remote possibility of the Jags trading for Tim Tebow. But coach Mike Mularkey is looking to put all the speculation to bed, instead telling the Associated Press that he’s committed to Blaine Gabbert as his starter for the 2012 season.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to work with him,” Mularkey said. “I’d like to give him a chance with some of the things we’re going to hopefully help him do. We feel like we can help him develop his talents. There’s a lot that he does very well and we just need to get that to be a consistent thing.”

Gabbert was one of the NFL’s least productive starting quarterbacks last season — he earned the job in September but went on to complete just 50.8 percent of his passes, amassing 2,214 yards, 12 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. The Jags lost five straight games early on, eventually finishing 5-11.

“Some of the criticism was pretty intense,” Gabbert told the AP. “You’re always going to get criticized; people need something to talk about. When the coaches say I’m doing fine, I trust their opinion because that’s the only one that matters. You can’t worry about what everybody is saying about your game. You’ve just got to focus on the things that you can control and the things you can improve on.”

Gabbert, 22, was the Jaguars’ first-round pick in the draft last year, No. 10 overall, out of Missouri. He’s 4-10 as a starter so far in his young career.

Teams have been interested in Tebow since the Denver Broncos signed quarterback Peyton Manning earlier in the week.

  • Report: Dolphins Sign Former Jaguars Quarterback David Garrard

    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

The Miami Dolphins have found themselves a new quarterback — or a new backup, or something. It’s not entirely clear. In any event, the Dolphins have signed David Garrard, according to Jay Glazer of FOX Sports.

Garrard spent nine seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars, including 2007 when he won nine of his 12 starts and led the Jags to the AFC playoffs. He didn’t play at all last season — Jacksonville released him just days before the start of the regular season, and he chose to undergo back surgery rather than try catching on with another team.

The 34-year-old signalcaller now moves to South Florida, where he may start for the Dolphins or he may not. Garrard will have to compete for incumbent starter Matt Moore for time under center — and of course, the Dolphins also still have the No. 8 overall pick in next month’s draft, meaning they could have a shot at Texas A&M standout Ryan Tannehill.

Garrard is 39-37 in the NFL as a starter for his career. He’s completed 61.6 percent of his passes for 16,003 yards, 89 touchdowns and 54 interceptions.

The Jacksonville Jaguars signed former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Laurent Robinson and former Miami Dolphins quarterback Chad Henne on Wednesday, according to the Florida Times-Union.

Robinson confirmed the signing via Twitter by thanking the Cowboys organization and welcoming his new career in Jacksonville.  Last season as a Cowboy, Robinson compiled 858 yards and 11 touchdowns, more receiving touchdowns than any other Cowboys player.

Henne was the starter in Miami a little over two years until he sustained a shoulder injury early last season, allowing Matt Moore to take over.  Henne will now compete with Jaguars second-year quarterback Blaine Gabbert for the starting job.

Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy had an interview scheduled for today with the Jacksonville Jaguars for their vacant head coaching position, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, however he was forced to reschedule after his club’s overtime victory over the heavily favored Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday evening.

McCoy has served as the Broncos offensive coordinator since 2009. He had previously served as a quarterbacks coach and an offensive assistant under current Broncos head coach John Fox when Fox roamed the sidelines for the Carolina Panthers.

The Jaguars head coaching position became available after outgoing owner Wayne Weaver fired longtime head coach Jack Del Rio as his last move as owner before selling the team to Shahid Khan. Del Rio had served as the head coach for Jacksonville since 2003.

Some reports have indicated that Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator, Jay Gruden, is the favorite to land the Jaguars’ position. The Bengals were eliminated from the playoffs Saturday after a 31-10 loss to the Houston Texans.

  • Former Jaguars RB Fred Taylor Says Jack Del Rio Not Fit For Head Coach

    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

Former Jacksonville Jaguars star running back Fred Taylor doesn’t think recently fired head coach Jack Del Rio is fit to be a head coach, according to Yahoo! Sports.

“At the end of the day, [Del Rio]‘s not a head coach,” Taylor told Yahoo!. “He’s a great defensive coach. But he’s not a head coach.”

Del Rio was fired by parting owner Wayne Weaver Tuesday morning, shortly after the team had lost its eighth game of the season. Weaver had given Del Rio a clear goal that the team would have to make the playoffs in 2011 for him to keep his job. The Jaguars had finished a promising 8-8 in 2010, however with the team earning their eighth loss of the season this weekend, it is not mathematically possible for them to improve upon last year’s finish.

Del Rio, 48, had posted a 68-70 record as Jacksonville’s head coach since joining the team in 2003. In 2002, Del Rio served as the defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers, and he has also spent time as an assistant defensive coach for the Baltimore Ravens and the New Orleans Saints.

Taylor played for the Jaguars for 11 years from 1998-2008, and under Del Rio for six of those years. Del Rio recorded his only three winning seasons with Taylor as his running back.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have fired head coach Jack Del Rio, sources have told ESPN.com. The team is expected to announce their decision today at noon.

Jacksonville has gone just 3-8 through 11 games this season. Team owner Wayne Weaver gave Del Rio a clear goal of making the playoffs in 2011 in order to keep his job.
