For the second time in two weeks, an Olympic gold medalist has returned their medal in protest of the International Olympic Committee’s decision vote wrestling out of the 2020 Summer Olympics, reports USA Today.

Russia’s Sagid Murtazaliev, who won heavyweight freestyle gold at the 2000 Games in Sydney followed Bulgarian champion Valentin Yordanov, who sent back his gold medal from 1996 Atlanta Games last week.

“The decision to return my Olympic medal was not easy for me,” Murtazaliev said in a letter addressed to IOC president Jacques Rogge and obtained by RIA Novosti. ”With this act I express my solidarity with the millions of athletes and fans of our sport who are condemning the recommendation of the IOC. Our sport is an integral part of the Olympic movement and one of the foundations of both the ancient and modern Olympics.”

The IOC’s executive board is scheduled to meet in May in St. Petersburg, Russia. They will then decide what sport or sports to recommend for inclusion for the 2020 games.  A final vote will be conducted in September in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Some of the candidates are wrestling, baseball/softball, karate, roller sports, sport climbing, squash, wakeboarding and wushu.

The International Olympic Committee will drop one sport from the 2020 Summer Olympics tomorrow, reports the Los Angeles Times

The IOC is prepping for the Sochi Olympics starting next February and the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The IOC will decide the host city for the 2020 Summer games in September with Istanbul, Turkey, Tokyo, Japan, and Madrid, Spain vying for the honors.

Among the sports reportedly on the chopping block are taekwondo, wrestling, badminton and table tennis and modern pentathlon. Modern pentathlon combines fencing, horse riding, swimming, running and shooting and has been a part of the Olympics since 1912. Taekwondo has been in the Olympics since 2000, wrestling since 1896, badminton since 1992 and table tennis since 1988.

The report analyzes more than three dozen criteria, including television ratings, ticket sales, anti-doping policy and global participation and popularity.

The last sports removed from the Olympics were baseball and softball, voted out by the IOC in 2005 and off the program since the 2008 Beijing Games.Joining the Olympics at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro will be golf and rugby.

The IOC executive board will meet in May to decide which sport or sports to propose for 2020 inclusion.
