Houston will try to bring the Super Bowl to Reliant Stadium in 2017, and work on the city’s proposal will begin soon, sources tell the Houston Chronicle’s David Barron.

“That is something that is coming up. It’s in the calendar,” Edgar Colon, the chairman of the group that oversees the Reliant Park, told Barron. “(That is) the next one that is up for bid and we intend to participate and to participate forcefully and aggressively to bring the Super Bowl to Houston.”

Houston hosted the Super Bowl in 2004 and unsuccessfully bid to host the 2009, 2010 and 2012 games. Officials also said they were potentially interested in hosting the 2016 Final Four.

The NFL is expected to announce the host of Super Bowl L, to be played in 2016, by May 2013. No timeline for naming the host of the following year’s game has been announced.

One possible complication to Houston’s bid is widespread belief that Dallas plans to bid for Super Bowl L. There is speculation the NFL would not want to hold the Super Bowl in Texas in consecutive years. If Dallas is successful, Houston’s chances could be hurt.

Houston Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson will be out for three to four weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, according to the Associated Press.

The operation will cause Johnson to miss the Texans’ organized team activities (OTAs), which began today. Johnson had the procedure two weeks ago.

A five-time Pro Bowler, Johnson missed nine games last season due to hamstring injuries. He then hyperextended his knee in a Nov. 27 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Johnson finished last season with 33 catches for 492 yards and two touchdowns.

Quarterback Matt Schaub also sat out today’s workout, recovering from surgery on his right foot. Both Schaub and Johnson are expected to be ready for training camp in August.

After being released two weeks ago by the Washington Redskins, quarterback John Beck has found a new job — Beck has agreed to a contract with the Houston Texans, according to Jay Drew of the Salt Lake Tribune.

Beck was released by the Redskins on draft night — the Skins selected Baylor’s Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III with the No. 2 overall pick in the draft before surprisingly adding Kirk Cousins from Michigan State as well, in round four.

In Houston, Beck is unlikely to see much time under center — Matt Schaub is the incumbent QB, and Beck will have to compete for the backup role with T.J. Yates.

Beck was the Miami Dolphins’ second-round pick in the 2007 draft. He completed 80 of 132 passes for the Redskins last year for four interceptions and two touchdowns.

After five seasons with the Houston Texans, Jacoby Jones is moving on — he’s got a new two-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens, a source tells Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Jones, the Texans’ third-round pick in the 2007 draft, was used primarily as a kick and punt returner during his five years in Houston. Of his 5,091 career all-purpose yards, 1,820 have come from returning punts, and 1,490 from kicks; he also has four career return touchdowns.

Jones, an alum of Div. II Lane College, turns 28 in July. It’s unclear what role he’ll play on the Ravens, who are already well stocked with receivers including Anquan Boldin, Torrey Smith, Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta.

The Houston Texans have signed veteran kicker Shayne Graham, according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle.

A former Pro Bowler, the 34-year-old Graham hasn’t had a regular kicking job since 2009, the last of his seven seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals. The journeyman has been with 13 different teams in his 12-year NFL career, most of them very briefly.

On the Texans, Graham will compete for the kicking duties with incoming rookie Randy Bullock, the team’s fifth-round pick out of Texas A&M.

“[Graham] has had some success in this league, and I think the competition will be good for them,” Texans coach Gary Kubiak said. “I want to see them compete because it should bring out the best in them.”

Graham was 6-for-7 on field-goal attempts last year, kicking for the Miami Dolphins and Baltimore Ravens.

Six years into his NFL career, Matt Leinart is looking like a bust, but there are still teams out there willing to give him another chance. Leinart is visiting with the Oakland Raiders and appears likely to sign, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Leinart had a frustrating season last year — the former USC quarterback broke his collarbone in late November, requiring season-ending surgery. He started just two games and finished the season 10-of-13 for 57 yards and one touchdown. The Texans released Leinart on March 13.

If Leinart signs with the Raiders, he’ll be their second Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from USC — Carson Palmer is their current starter. Leinart would likely be competing with Terrelle Pryor for the backup QB role.

Leinart turns 29 next month. He was the Arizona Cardinals’ first-round pick in the 2006 NFL draft, going No. 10 overall.

How badly do the Buffalo Bills want to sign free-agent defensive end Mario Williams? Here’s how badly — according to Mark Gaughan of Buffalo News, the team is committed to making Williams the top-paid defensive player in the NFL.

That’s a lofty goal. The Chicago Bears signed Julius Peppers for six years and $91.5 million in 2010, with over half that money guaranteed. But the Bills are dying to sign Williams, the two-time Pro Bowler with 53 career sacks to his name.

Bills general manager Buddy Nix flew down to North Carolina with defensive coordinator Dave Wannstedt to pick up Williams and bring him to Buffalo for a dinner with team officials.

The team is looking to finalize a deal with Williams as soon as possible. If the star defensive end leaves Buffalo without a new contract in hand, the Bills are unlikely to have a shot at signing the former No. 1 pick later.

He finished the season 10-of-13 for 57 yards and one touchdown (in other words, a good first quarter for someone like Manning).

Leinart, a former Heisman Trophy winner who turns 29 in May, was the Arizona Cardinals’ first-round pick in the 2006 NFL draft, going No. 10 overall. He has 3,950 career passing yards and 15 TDs to his name.

Arian Foster is heading for restricted free agency, but in an interview on Radio Row in Indianapolis today, he said he’d like to remain with the Houston Texans.

“It’s out of my hands,” Foster said. “It’s not under my control. The Texans are going to make the best move for their organization and their team, and if I happen to be a part of that, that’s a wonderful thing because I want to be a part of it. But if not, I have to continue living my life and they’ll do that with theirs. But I want to — they’ve expressed interest that they want to, and they already know that I want to stay in Houston.”

Foster, an undrafted free agent in 2009, was the NFL’s leading rusher in 2010 and has made the Pro Bowl in back-to-back seasons. Entering his fourth season, he will be restricted, meaning he can sign an offer sheet with another team but the Texans can retain him by matching the offer.

“Texans QB Matt Leinart,” Schefter writes, “whose left arm was in a sling with a collarbone injury, said there’s a ‘pretty good possibility’ his season is over.”

Leinart was playing in relief of Matt Schaub, who also suffered a season-ending injury, and the opportunity was widely viewed as a last chance for Leinart to establish himself as a viable NFL QB.  A first-round draft pick of the Cardinals, Leinart entered the league to high expectations following a successful career at USC, but always found himself derailed in Arizona.  The chance to fill in for Schaub with the Texans seemed to offer and opportunity to lead a team with a lot of offensive firepower and an established, successful scheme.

Instead, Leinart’s start ended just before halftime on a tough hit by Jacksonville defensive end Jeremy Mincey.  He left the game having completed 10-of-13 passes for 57 yards and a touchdown, and was relieved by rookie T.J. Yates, who finished the game.  The Texans did not score after Leinart’s departure but still held on to win the game 20-13.

It had been originally estimated that Johnson would miss only two-to-three weeks. After losing their first two games without the talented wide receiver, the Texans won their last three games in a row. It is expected that Johnson will return following next week’s bye.

The former first round pick has played his entire nine-year career with the Texans. The 6’3” receiver has recorded 100-or-more receptions in three separate seasons in his career, and has amassed 52 touchdowns total.

The Washington Redskins have released Donte Stallworth for new addition David Anderson, the Washington Post reports.

Washington and Anderson negotiated a deal that was solidified Monday night.  The sixth-year wide receiver played under current offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan with the Houston Texans.  Last year with Houston in 12 games, he had 11 receptions for 117-yards overall.

With Santana Moss sidelined with a broken hand, Stallworth has not been able to fill the void the Redskins have experienced among their receiver corps.  The nine-year veteran has just five catches for 46 yards in four games this season.

Anderson will support tight end Fred Davis who leads the team with 40 catches for 559 yards and two touchdowns and wide receiver Jabar Gaffney who has 31 catches for 441 yards and two touchdowns.  Rookie Leonard Hankerson has been promoted to the starting lineup as well.
