A lot has been said about the NFL’s replacement refs this season. A few coaches in the league have been fined for their supposed verbal abuse towards them. Even President Barack Obama weighed in on their performance.

Now, a Green Bay eye doctor is offering free Lasik eye surgery to the replacement refs, only days after the Green Bay Packers lost in controversial fashion to the Seattle Seahawks.

According to WTVR in Appleton, WI, Dr. Christopher Smith, a local optometrist, has promised free Lasik eye surgery to any NFL replacement ref in order to prevent another confusing ending like the one that transpired on Sept. 24 when Seahawks receiver Golden Tate caught the game-winning touchdown with eight seconds remaining in the game. Smith said the one ref in particular who called the play a touchdown is nearsighted and needs to see beyond his own arm:

“The referees obviously they had some vision issues, so we decided that we could  help them with that,” said Dr. Christopher Smith.

The NFL and the NFL Referees Association are reportedly close to ending the lockout and the regular refs could be back on the field as early as Sept. 30.

The NFL will not fine players who commented on Twitter after the controversial ending of Monday night’s game between the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks, NFL.com reports.

“Got f—– by the refs,” Lang tweeted after the Packers 14-12 loss. “Embarrassing. Thanks NFL,” said Packers guard T.J. Lang.

That comment was retweeted over 40,000 times in less than an hour.

“F— it NFL,” Lang wrote later. “Fine me and use the money to pay the regular refs.”

“Come on NFL this s— is getting out of control,” he wrote. “(Cost) us a DAMN game. Horrible!,” said Packers tight end Jermichael Finley.

The NFL has yet to fine a player because of remarks made on social media outside of its time restrictions before and after games.

“It was awful. Just look at the replay,” Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said in a news conference after the game. “And then the fact that it was reviewed. It was awful. That’s all I’m going to say about it.”

  • NFL: Seahawks-Packers referees made right call on catch, missed interference

    Seahawks-Packers call

The NFL has issued a statement responding to the uproar over the last play of yesterday night’s game between the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers. In it, the league supports the decision by referees to award a catch to Seahawks wide receiver Golden Tate, claiming it to be a “simultaneous catch,” in which the benefit of the doubt goes to the offensive player.

However, the league admits that end zone officials missed an offensive pass interference call on Tate, who pushed Packers cornerback Sam Shields to the ground before leaping to catch the Hail Mary pass to the end zone that won the game for the Seahawks in the closing moments of last night’s contest.

The play has generated yet another firestorm of controversy throughout the league, with several players, analysts, and fans venting their frustration on social media and in person. It is also the latest in a series of gaffes by the replacement officials called in by the NFL to officiate games while the labor dispute with the league’s normal referees is ongoing.

Despite the protests from all corners, the league dispelled any notion that the game result could be overturned, saying in the statement that “The result of the game is final.”

The full statement from the NFL is as follows:

In Monday’s game between the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks, Seattle faced a 4th-and-10 from the Green Bay 24 with eight seconds remaining in the game.

Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson threw a pass into the end zone. Several players, including Seattle wide receiver Golden Tate and Green Bay safety M.D. Jennings, jumped into the air in an attempt to catch the ball.

While the ball is in the air, Tate can be seen shoving Green Bay cornerback Sam Shields to the ground. This should have been a penalty for offensive pass interference, which would have ended the game. It was not called and is not reviewable in instant replay.

When the players hit the ground in the end zone, the officials determined that both Tate and Jennings had possession of the ball. Under the rule for simultaneous catch, the ball belongs to Tate, the offensive player. The result of the play was a touchdown.

Replay Official Howard Slavin stopped the game for an instant replay review. The aspects of the play that were reviewable included if the ball hit the ground and who had possession of the ball. In the end zone, a ruling of a simultaneous catch is reviewable. That is not the case in the field of play, only in the end zone.

Referee Wayne Elliott determined that no indisputable visual evidence existed to overturn the call on the field, and as a result, the on-field ruling of touchdown stood. The NFL Officiating Department reviewed the video today and supports the decision not to overturn the on-field ruling following the instant replay review.

The result of the game is final.

Green Bay Packer James Jones took a tongue-lashing from quarterback Aaron Rodgers in front of a national television audience Thursday night, but the wide receiver told reporters it’s all good today.

“Me and A-Rod are way closer than that, man, to let something like that come in between us,” Jones told a gaggle of reporters at his locker Tuesday.

Rodgers was seen chastising the sixth-year receiver after his uncertainty during a route ended with Bears cornerback Tim Jennings intercepting the quarterback’s pass.

Jones explained the intricacies of teammate relationships and that the interception was his fault.

“We’re out there trying to win the ball game. It was my fault. I gave him mixed signals,” Jones said Tuesday. “I mean, we’re all emotional out there, man. It’s common, man. We do a lot of head gestures and stuff like that, the camera may not just be on us. Me and him, we’re both competitive, we’re trying to win. It was my fault. We don’t ever want to turn the ball over. I’m not mad at him. Shoot, we’re trying to win, man. Get on me. I messed up.”

During the same game, Bears quarterback Jay Cutler also drew criticism for shoving offensive tackle J’Marcus Webb after Cutler was pressured in the pocket.

The incidents gave FOX NFL analyst and NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw reason to tell Rodgers and Cutler to stop embarrassing their teammates.

Chris Mortenson of ESPN tweeted early Friday evening that free agent running back Cedric Benson is in Green Bay and is expected to sign with the Packers.

Benson, a former first-round pick of the Chicago Bears, resurrected his career with the Cincinnati Bengals over the last four seasons, totaling more than 4,100 yards rushing and starting 44 of the 46 games he played. The lack of interest in Benson, only 29, during the off-season was curious.

There is a wide range of opinion on the Packers’ making this move.

From former NFL executive Andrew Brandt:

    From Michael Fabiano of NFL.com:

Here’s a lengthy analysis from Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com. The key point: “You don’t go through the trouble of signing Cedric Benson just for a look-see. You bring him in because you think you need him.”

Free safety Nick Collins is recovering from a serious neck injury and considering a return to pro football, but it reportedly won’t be with the Green Bay Packers. The Packers told Collins this morning they plan to release him, according to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The Packers have not yet made an official announcement on the news, but it’s been confirmed by Collins’ agent, Alan Herman.

Collins ruptured a disk in his neck in Week 2 of last season; he underwent a single-level cervical fusion in September. He’s undergone numerous tests to evaluate whether he’s ready for a return, and he definitely wants to play if possible.

Collins was due to make $4.05 million in salary and bonuses from the Packers in 2012. The team gains $3.05 million in cap space by cutting him, which will give them added flexibility going into the NFL draft tomorrow night. Collins is not subject to the waiver system, since he’s a vested veteran.

Collins, a second-round draft pick in 2005 out of Bethune-Cookman, was elected to three straight Pro Bowls from 2008 to 2010. He’s amasssed 419 tackles, 21 interceptions for 507 return yards and four touchdowns in his eight-year NFL career.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is already known well by national TV audiences for more than just his prowess on the football field, as his “Discount Double Check” commercials for State Farm have made him even more of a household name. But Rodgers has his eye on bigger and better things, pop culture-wise: He’s interested in hosting “Saturday Night Live.”

Rodgers mentioned the possibility several times yesterday on ESPN radio in Milwaukee, according to Kevin Seifert of ESPN. The reigning MVP said he met with a couple of SNL cast members over the weekend in Indianapolis, and he’s been networking to get on the show.

“I’m hopeful that we can figure something out there,” Rodgers said.

Rodgers, 28, was the Packers’ first-round draft pick in 2005. He took over the starting job in 2008 with the retirement of Brett Favre, and he vaulted quickly into the national spotlight by winning the Super Bowl last winter and league MVP honors just last week.

Crossing over from “star athlete” to pure “star,” however, may be the hard part, and hosting SNL would be a huge step in that direction. As Seifert notes, past athletes to host the NBC variety show include crossover stars like Fran Tarkenton, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Joe Montana, Charles Barkley, Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Nancy Kerrigan and Walter Payton.

“Tom has been an integral part of our success and our staff, making it an obvious decision to promote him to offensive coordinator,” head coach Mike McCarthy told FOX News. “He has earned this opportunity, and we look forward to continued offensive success in 2012.”

After six seasons in the NFL and zero playoff appearances, Brandon Marshall is getting antsy — and now, he’s got a plan. Jeff Darlington at NFL.com reports that Marshall has reached out to Packers backup quarterback Matt Flynn about joining forces in Miami next season.

“You’ve got some guys in the draft, but there’s not too many guys out there just walking the streets,” Marshall said. “Matt is available. … We’ve talked. I reached out to him.”

Marshall and the Dolphins went 6-10 last year with Matt Moore, Chad Henne and J.P. Losman splitting the snaps. Moore came on strong at the end of the year and finished with a respectable 87.1 passer rating, but Marshall isn’t sure about the young QB’s future in Miami.

“Obviously, Matt had a great year,” Marshall said. “You don’t want to take anything away from Matt, but I think we really bring in somebody who can compete and make the team better. We need someone who is going to grab a hold of our offense, hold everyone accountable and be that leader.”

Flynn, a former LSU standout, saw very limited playing time last season as Aaron Rodgers’ backup. He did, however, have a huge afternoon in Green Bay’s season finale, passing for 480 yards and six touchdowns in a shootout win over the Lions.

Philbin had been with the Packers since 2003, when he got his start in the NFL as an offensive line assistant. He worked his way up, and ultimately ended up leading one of the most productive offenses in NFL history this season. The Packers led the league with 560 points scored in 2011.

“So eventually I clicked over,” Rodgers said to ESPN 540 radio, “and actually I clicked over when it was down to the top five and was amazed as it went four, she’s still up there. Three, she’s still up there. Two, she’s still up there. Is she really going to win this thing? And then, sure enough, she did. So I’ve got to give her a lot of credit for that. That’s quite an accomplishment. A whole year of getting to do all of that Miss America stuff. That’s exciting for Wisconsin, the one bright spot over the weekend.”

Rodgers claims he has not responded yet to the newly-crowned Miss America, although he has expressed his excited for her victory.

Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin will reportedly interview with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for their vacant head coaching position, according to ESPN.

Philbin has also reportedly interviewed with the Miami Dolphins about their head coaching position as well.  The 50-year-old has no head coaching experience at any level, however, he has served as the offensive coordinator of one of the best offenses in football since 2007.

The Packers have finished in the top 10 in points scored each year that Philbin has held his position at Green Bay. In 2011, the club led the NFL with 560 points scored.

Philbin has recently been the center of some media attention after it was reported that his 21-year-old son, Michael, was found dead after a state-wide search.

While the state of Wisconsin is likely still recovering from the Green Bay Packers stunning loss to the New York Giants last night at home, one small bit of solace has to come from the fact that Miss Wisconsin, Laura Kaeoppeler was named Miss America just one night before.

During her introduction on stage, Kaeoppeler told Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers to call her.

“If you’re watching, Aaron Rodgers, call me,” she said in front of national television.

After her victory, Kaeppeler will serve the next year as Miss America while helping to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network.

  • Aaron Rodgers: Packers Have Themselves To Blame

Reigning Super Bowl MVP Aaron Rodgers blamed the Green Bay Packers stunning loss to the New York Giants last night on poor play, not rust, according to the New York Post.

“Oh, it’s real — we got beat by a team that played better tonight,” Rodgers told the Post. “That’s the reality of this league.”

“We just turned the ball over too many times to win,” Rodgers said. “They had a good plan, but we had a lot of chances to execute and didn’t do it. We put our defense in a tough spot, and that’s why our season is over.”

The Packers had three lost fumbles, an interception, and upwards of six dropped passes last night in the 37-20 thumping at home to the Giants. The loss brings a surprising end to what some thought would be a fairy tale season resulting in the team’s second consecutive Super Bowl.

Instead, the 15-2 Packers will begin their offseason Monday morning.

The 10-7 Giants will play the 14-3 San Francisco 49ers Sunday evening in the NFC Championship.

Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy said today that offensive coordinator Joe Philbin will be away from the team indefinitely, continuing to mourn the loss of his son Michael.

Choking up and calling the loss a “punch in the heart,” McCarthy told ESPN that Philbin wasn’t with the team for today’s practice and there’s no timetable for him to return. McCarthy and his offensive assistant coaches will divide up Philbin’s responsibilities for the time being.

Divers found the body of Michael Philbin, 21, in the Fox River on Monday. The Oshkosh, Wisc., police department issued a statement Wednesday saying the cause of death was freshwater drowning, according to an autopsy. No evidence suggesting foul play was found.

The Packers will take on the New York Giants in the wild-card round of the NFC playoffs at 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
