  • Report: Packers Will Release Injured Free Safety Nick Collins

    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

Free safety Nick Collins is recovering from a serious neck injury and considering a return to pro football, but it reportedly won’t be with the Green Bay Packers. The Packers told Collins this morning they plan to release him, according to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The Packers have not yet made an official announcement on the news, but it’s been confirmed by Collins’ agent, Alan Herman.

Collins ruptured a disk in his neck in Week 2 of last season; he underwent a single-level cervical fusion in September. He’s undergone numerous tests to evaluate whether he’s ready for a return, and he definitely wants to play if possible.

Collins was due to make $4.05 million in salary and bonuses from the Packers in 2012. The team gains $3.05 million in cap space by cutting him, which will give them added flexibility going into the NFL draft tomorrow night. Collins is not subject to the waiver system, since he’s a vested veteran.

Collins, a second-round draft pick in 2005 out of Bethune-Cookman, was elected to three straight Pro Bowls from 2008 to 2010. He’s amasssed 419 tackles, 21 interceptions for 507 return yards and four touchdowns in his eight-year NFL career.

    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is already known well by national TV audiences for more than just his prowess on the football field, as his “Discount Double Check” commercials for State Farm have made him even more of a household name. But Rodgers has his eye on bigger and better things, pop culture-wise: He’s interested in hosting “Saturday Night Live.”

Rodgers mentioned the possibility several times yesterday on ESPN radio in Milwaukee, according to Kevin Seifert of ESPN. The reigning MVP said he met with a couple of SNL cast members over the weekend in Indianapolis, and he’s been networking to get on the show.

“I’m hopeful that we can figure something out there,” Rodgers said.

Rodgers, 28, was the Packers’ first-round draft pick in 2005. He took over the starting job in 2008 with the retirement of Brett Favre, and he vaulted quickly into the national spotlight by winning the Super Bowl last winter and league MVP honors just last week.

Crossing over from “star athlete” to pure “star,” however, may be the hard part, and hosting SNL would be a huge step in that direction. As Seifert notes, past athletes to host the NBC variety show include crossover stars like Fran Tarkenton, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Joe Montana, Charles Barkley, Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Nancy Kerrigan and Walter Payton.

The Green Bay Packers announced today that they have promoted Tom Clements from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator.

Clements replaces Joe Philbin, who left last week to become the next head coach of the Miami Dolphins. This is the second NFL coordinator position for Clements, who also served as OC of the Buffalo Bills from 2004 to ’05.

“Tom has been an integral part of our success and our staff, making it an obvious decision to promote him to offensive coordinator,” head coach Mike McCarthy told FOX News. “He has earned this opportunity, and we look forward to continued offensive success in 2012.”

Clements had been the Packers’ quarterbacks coach since 2006. He also held the same position for the Saints, Chiefs and Steelers earlier in his career.

“I’m happy that it’s happened, and I’m happy for Joe that he’s a head coach, and I’m glad I was able to step into his place,” Clements said. “I’ve been a coordinator before, only for a few years. I’ve always wanted to get back to doing that, and I’m thankful that it’s here in Green Bay.

“I think it’s a great opportunity. We have a young team. We’ve had success over the past couple of years. We still have a lot of room to grow, and I’m happy to be a part of it.”

After six seasons in the NFL and zero playoff appearances, Brandon Marshall is getting antsy — and now, he’s got a plan. Jeff Darlington at NFL.com reports that Marshall has reached out to Packers backup quarterback Matt Flynn about joining forces in Miami next season.

“You’ve got some guys in the draft, but there’s not too many guys out there just walking the streets,” Marshall said. “Matt is available. … We’ve talked. I reached out to him.”

Marshall and the Dolphins went 6-10 last year with Matt Moore, Chad Henne and J.P. Losman splitting the snaps. Moore came on strong at the end of the year and finished with a respectable 87.1 passer rating, but Marshall isn’t sure about the young QB’s future in Miami.

“Obviously, Matt had a great year,” Marshall said. “You don’t want to take anything away from Matt, but I think we really bring in somebody who can compete and make the team better. We need someone who is going to grab a hold of our offense, hold everyone accountable and be that leader.”

Flynn, a former LSU standout, saw very limited playing time last season as Aaron Rodgers’ backup. He did, however, have a huge afternoon in Green Bay’s season finale, passing for 480 yards and six touchdowns in a shootout win over the Lions.

Five days after his season ended with an upset loss at the hands of the New York Giants, Joe Philbin has earned a promotion — the Packers’ offensive coordinator is leaving Green Bay to become the new head coach of the Miami Dolphins, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Philbin had been with the Packers since 2003, when he got his start in the NFL as an offensive line assistant. He worked his way up, and ultimately ended up leading one of the most productive offenses in NFL history this season. The Packers led the league with 560 points scored in 2011.

The 50-year-old Philbin takes over for Todd Bowles, who held the position on an interim basis for the final three games of the 2011 season. Before that, Tony Sparano had been at the helm in Miami since 2008. Philbin and Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy were considered the two frontrunners to land the position.

Three days after the Packers’ loss to the New York Giants, Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers spent some of his time talking to ESPN 540 radio, mourning the early exit of his team from the playoffs.  After Rodgers finished answering questions about what he and the team could have done differently to win against the Giants, he finally addressed what everyone has been wondering:  Has he called Miss America yet?

Before winning Saturday night’s pageant, then-Miss Wisconsin Laura Kaeppeler declared on National TV: “If you’re watching, Aaron Rodgers, call me.”

At the time of the pageant, Rodgers claims he was watching the Broncos-Patriots game and also keeping track of the pageant race online.  The Pro Bowl quarterback said he was bombarded with text messages after Kaeppeler’s shout out.

“So eventually I clicked over,” Rodgers said to ESPN 540 radio, “and actually I clicked over when it was down to the top five and was amazed as it went four, she’s still up there. Three, she’s still up there. Two, she’s still up there. Is she really going to win this thing? And then, sure enough, she did. So I’ve got to give her a lot of credit for that. That’s quite an accomplishment. A whole year of getting to do all of that Miss America stuff. That’s exciting for Wisconsin, the one bright spot over the weekend.”

Rodgers claims he has not responded yet to the newly-crowned Miss America, although he has expressed his excited for her victory.

Reigning Super Bowl MVP Aaron Rodgers blamed the Green Bay Packers stunning loss to the New York Giants last night on poor play, not rust, according to the New York Post.

“Oh, it’s real — we got beat by a team that played better tonight,” Rodgers told the Post. “That’s the reality of this league.”

“We just turned the ball over too many times to win,” Rodgers said. “They had a good plan, but we had a lot of chances to execute and didn’t do it. We put our defense in a tough spot, and that’s why our season is over.”

The Packers had three lost fumbles, an interception, and upwards of six dropped passes last night in the 37-20 thumping at home to the Giants. The loss brings a surprising end to what some thought would be a fairy tale season resulting in the team’s second consecutive Super Bowl.

The league suspended Suh two games for the incident, and Dietrich-Smith doesn’t expect anything out of the ordinary to happen if they’re both on the field at the same time.

“I think we’ve all moved past it,” Dietrich-Smith said. “It’s a big learning experience for everybody. I think everyone in the league can take note of everything that happened and I think every player is going to take a step forward to move past that kind of stuff.”

The Lions and Suh will visit Dietrich-Smith and the Packers on Sunday in the regular season finale.

  • Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers Named Starters For Jan. 29 Pro Bowl In Honolulu

There’s been speculation all year long that Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers could meet up in a head-to-head showdown at the end of this season. Now, it’s been confirmed.

    No, not that one.

Brady and Rodgers were named on Tuesday night as starting quarterbacks for the annual Pro Bowl, slated to be held on Jan. 29 in Honolulu. This marks the seventh selection for Brady and the second for Rodgers. The two superstars will headline their respective conferences in the 66th annual all-star exhibition.

This marks the third consecutive season, however, that the Pro Bowl has been held the week before the Super Bowl and not the week after. This means both conference champion quarterbacks will be held out of the game, so if either Brady’s New England Patriots or Rodgers’ Green Bay Packers should qualify for the big game in Indianapolis, the QBs’ backups will start instead. Ben Roethlisberger and Philip Rivers were named backup quarterbacks for the AFC, while Drew Brees and Eli Manning got the nods for the NFC squad.

The Patriots led the AFC with eight selections for the Pro Bowl; the 49ers will send eight of their own for the NFC, most notably running back Frank Gore.

  • Green Bay Packers Have Made Over $60 Million From Selling Stock In Franchise

Think of it as a bake sale, but on steroids — the Green Bay Packers have made in excess of $60 million this month from selling shares of stock in the franchise.

Angling for a $143 million expansion of Lambeau Field in the near future, the Packers made an initial public offering of 250,000 new shares of stock on Dec. 6. Despite the hefty price tag of $250 and lack of resale value, that allotment is now nearly gone, according to the Associated Press. The team plans to make an additional 30,000 shares available to meet the considerable demand.

“The support from our fans has been outstanding, and we appreciate their enthusiasm,” president and CEO Mark Murphy said in a statement. “We continue to receive interest in the offering, and this increase in the number of available shares will help ensure that we are able to accommodate all those who want to become shareholders.”

This is the fifth public offering of stock in Packers history — the franchise last sold shares in 1997, offering 400,000 for $200 each. Only 120,000 shares were sold.

If the Packers are able to move all 280,000 shares this time, they will have raised a cool $70 million to renovate Lambeau.

The stocks are available now at packersowner.com.
