Grambling State‘s men basketball team just completed a season for the record books.

The team finished the 2012-13 season 0-28 after losing in the quarterfinals of the Southwestern Athletic (SWAC) tournament 59-51 to Alabama A&M Wednesday night. The team has a bit to go to set the record for the longest losing streak in Division I history. That record is held by Towson, who lost 41 in a row in 2011 and 2012.

It was the first loss all season by the team that wasn’t by double digits. The team entered the tournament dead last in the nation in scoring average and scoring margin. They also ranked 340th (out of 345 Division I teams) or worse in points scored, scoring defense, field goal percentage and turnovers per game.

Grambling also went 0-18 in conference play during the regular season.

The team had a great chance to make some noise in the conference tournament as only seven teams participated because three teams were banned from postseason play.

The city of Grambling, La. has petitioned the NCAA to remove victories from the all-time wins record of former Penn State coach Joe Paterno and return the record to legendary Grambling State coach Eddie Robinson, the Shreveport Times reports.

Grambling State athletic director Percy Caldwell said he did not know anything about the request and that the school was not involved in the petition.

Pamela Breedlove of Bossier City sent a three page letter to the NCAA on Wednesday, explaining the city’s position regarding Eddie Robinson, who won 408 games in his 57-year career at Grambling State.

Paterno was fired from Penn State two weeks after setting the all-time mark of 409 wins.  Robinson had the previous mark of 408.

“Even though it was done by outside counsel, the Freeh Report was the university’s report,” Breedlove said. “It said what their employees, including coach Paterno, did wrong. We’re hoping the end result of this is coach Robinson will get his record back so everyone will think a great man holds this record.”
