Golden State Warriors power forward David Lee is out for the remainder of the season with a strained groin, according Contra Costa Times

“The doctors called me and said you’ve got to shut this guy down,” Warriors general manager Larry Riley told the paper.

The morning after scoring a game-high 30 points in a loss to Dallas, Lee had an MRI to find the source of his pain. The MRI revealed a strained groin and a stress reaction.

This season, Lee was averaging 20.1 points and 9.6 rebounds per game.  With the ninth worst record in the NBA, the Warriors (22-37) next face one of the league’s best San Antonio Spurs (42-16) Monday night.

During an event held by the Golden State Warriors to retire the jersey of Chris Mullen, the ceremony was interrupted when fans booed team owner Joe Lacob.

Rick Barry, a former Warriors legend, at one point grabbed the microphone and pleaded with the Warriors fans to “show some class.”

“You fans are the greatest fans in the world, as everyone has said,” Barry said. “Show a little bit of class.”

    “This is crazy,” Barry continued.

Mullins also pleaded with the crowd to support the team’s relatively new owner.

Lacob purchased the team in the summer of 2010. In the two seasons since taking control of the team, the Warriors have gone 54-71.

  • Report: Suns, Warriors Vying To Sign Kings Castoff J.J. Hickson

    Decrease fontDecrease font
    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

J.J. Hickson was just waived a few hours ago by the Sacramento Kings, but teams are already lining up to acquire the free-agent big man. Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports that the Golden State Warriors and Phoenix Suns have emerged as the frontrunners for Hickson.

Hickson and the Kings agreed to a buyout today on the $2.3 he had left on his contract. Once the 23-year-old power forward clears waivers, he’ll be free to sign with a new team, and he wants to find a new club that will give him playing time and a chance to showcase himself for free agency this summer.

Hickson, the No. 19 overall pick in the 2008 NBA draft, was promising last season for the Cleveland Cavaliers, averaging 13.8 points and 8.7 rebounds per contest. The Cavs traded him to Sacramento for Omri Casspi before last year’s draft.

  • Andrew Bogut Unlikely To Play For Warriors This Season, Hopeful For Olympics

    Decrease fontDecrease font
    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

Andrew Bogut has a new team, but when he’ll first take the court and actually play for them is anyone’s guess. The veteran center says the Golden State Warriors will probably rest him for the rest of this season, according to the Australian Associated Press.

“The last thing they’ll want to do is rush me back to play in a couple of games,” said Bogut, who’s on the mend from a broken left ankle. “I’ve got to have scans at the eight-week point after I broke my ankle. If the scan says we want you in the boot for another three or four weeks, or they don’t want me resuming too quick, it will come down to missing the season.”

Bogut broke the ankle in a Jan. 25 Milwaukee Bucks win over the Houston Rockets. He’s spent the last seven weeks resting the ankle and preparing for a comeback; the Bucks then traded him to Golden State on Tuesday, along with Stephen Jackson, for a package including Monta Ellis.

The ankle is just one of several injuries that have plagued Bogut in recent years. Elbow, wrist and hand ailments have bothered him ever since a freak accident in an April 2010 game against the Phoenix Suns, in which he fell down while attempting a dunk.

Bogut says that while he’s unlikely to play for the Warriors this season, there’s still a chance he’ll be healthy and ready to represent Australia at the London Olympic Games this July.

“It’s a tough question to answer right now,” he said. “To be honest, I haven’t given it a whole lot of thought. Without talking myself up, I think I’m as professional as they come. I have my own workout and training facility in Melbourne, I’d be rehabbing and training like I would for any other event, and we have enough lead-up games to the Olympics to get ourselves ready.”

  • Report: Spurs Discussing Trading Richard Jefferson For Stephen Jackson

    Decrease fontDecrease font
    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

This may have slipped your mind, but before Stephen Jackson was a ball-hogging, coach-killing clubhouse cancer on a handful of NBA teams, he was a hardworking youngster that helped the 2003 San Antonio Spurs win a championship. Now, interestingly enough, there’s speculation that the Spurs may be interested in rekindling something with Captain Jack:

Jackson was just traded earlier this week — from the Milwaukee Bucks, along with Andrew Bogut, to the Golden State Warriors for Monta Ellis, Kwame Brown and Ekpe Udoh. But there’s been increased speculation yesterday and today that Golden State isn’t Jackson’s final destination, and now the Spurs are apparently interested in making a deal.

It’s not surprising the Spurs are trying to unload Jefferson, who turns 32 this spring and has seen his production dip. He’s averaging just 9.2 points per game this season, his first time in single digits in a decade.

The salary cap math works perfectly — Jackson is making $9,256,500 this season, and Jefferson, $9,282,000.

The clock is ticking, so expect this deal to happen within minutes. It makes sense for both teams.

UPDATE: Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports reports that this deal is now done. Jackson and Jefferson are indeed switching teams.

  • Bucks Trade Andrew Bogut, Stephen Jackson To Warriors For Monta Ellis

    Decrease fontDecrease font
    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

Finally, the NBA trade deadline action is underway — the Golden State Warriors have agreed in principle to trade Monta Ellis, Ekpe Udoh and Kwame Brown to the Milwaukee Bucks for Andrew Bogut and Stephen Jackson, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports. The deal will be officially completed late tonight.

In itself, this deal is a big one, as Ellis ranks ninth in the NBA with 21.9 points per game, which should give the Bucks an immediate jolt in their push for an Eastern Conference playoff spot. But there are further repercussions as well — Ellis’ move may derail the Orlando Magic’s chances of keeping Dwight Howard.

Ellis was on Howard’s “wish list” of players Orlando could acquire in order to convince Howard to stay in free agency this summer; with the high-scoring guard now off the market, the Magic just scramble for a Plan B.

As for Bogut, the Bucks are losing one of the best centers in the game when healthy — the Aussie averaged 12.8 points, 11.1 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game last season — but ankle and elbow injuries have limited the big man in recent years.

In related news, Wojnarowski has learned that the Bucks plan to keep star guard Brandon Jennings, their lottery pick in the 2009 draft.

  • Report: Magic In Talks To Acquire Warriors’ Monta Ellis

    Decrease fontDecrease font
    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

A late-breaking rumor has the Orlando Magic and Golden State Warriors working on a major trade — but no, not that major. The centerpiece of this deal would be not Dwight Howard, but rather Warriors high-scoring guard Monta Ellis.

According to Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld, the deal being discussed is a three-teamer, including the New Orleans Hornets as well, that would send Ellis to Orlando:

Ellis is one of the players on Howard’s wish list, meaning GM Otis Smith and the Magic are making a concerted effort to bring more talent to Orlando and convince Howard to stay.

Ellis leads the Warriors this season in points per game (21.9), assists per game (6.0) and steals per game (1.5). He was just named the Western Conference Player of the Week today, after leading Golden State to a 3-1 record last week.

  • Report: Rockets, Warriors Interested In ‘Rental’ Trades For Dwight Howard

    Decrease fontDecrease font
    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

Dwight Howard has made it clear all along that if he leaves Orlando, there are three teams he’d like to play for — the New Jersey Nets, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Dallas Mavericks.

But there are other teams out there interested in trading for the superstar big man anyway, even if he won’t sign an extension past this season. The Houston Rockets and Golden State Warriors are open to making “rental” moves for Howard, according to Ken Berger of CBS.

The Rockets have been trying to get an All-Star caliber big man for years, most notably attempting to get Pau Gasol in the three-way Chris Paul blockbuster that was shot down back in December. They remain in pursuit of the Lakers’ big man, but they’re also interested in Howard if the Magic are willing to swing a deal.

The Warriors are a strange match for Howard — unlike the 21-19 Rockets, they’re most likely well out of playoff contention at 15-21, still in long-term rebuilding mode. Their interest in Howard indicates they want more than just a six-week rental, and perhaps they have a plan in the works to convice Superman to stay in the Bay Area long-term.

The Magic, who sit third in the Eastern Conference right now at 25-15, have to make a decision soon — the trade deadline is now only a week away.

This season, Ellis, 26, is averaging 22.2 points, 5.7 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game.

  • Golden State Warriors Aggressively Pursuing Dwight Howard

    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

The Golden State Warriors are aggressively pursuing a trade for Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard, according to Yahoo! Sports.

The Warriors, who had previously not been thought of as one of the top contenders to land Howard, are reportedly willing to trade away significant pieces of their future even without a contract extension set in place for the three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year. According to Yahoo!, Golden State is willing to bring on Howard as a one-year “rental” with the hopes that they will be able to convince him to stay long-term during the season.

Yahoo! also reports that Golden State would be open to trading one of their two young and talented guards, Stephen Curry and Monta Ellis in order to get Howard. The Warriors were not one of the teams which Howard had listed on his short list of clubs he would be open to signing a contract extension with.

While at one point a Howard trade seemed immanent, the Magic have said recently that they are not likely to trade Howard until closer to the NBA’s trade deadline, if at all. By waiting until closer to the deadline to potentially deal Howard, the Magic open the door to convincing the center to possibly stay with the team, and also give themselves more leverage in a potential trade.

Howard averaged 22.9 points and 14.1 rebounds per game last season for the Magic.

  • Stephen Curry Out With Sprained Ankle, Unlikely To Play Until Saturday Against Sixers

    Decrease fontDecrease font
    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

In what appears to be a troubling trend for the young rising star of the Golden State Warriors, Stephen Curry has once again been diagnosed with a sprained right ankle.

The Warriors’ 23-year-old point guard severely sprained the ankle three times last season and reinjured it last week in a preseason game against the Kings. He played through the pain in two regular-season games this week, including a dazzling performance against the Bulls. Curry dropped 21 points, 10 assists, seven rebounds and six steals in a 99-91 victory over the Eastern Conference heavyweights, but he also rolled the ankle in the fourth quarter. Today’s MRI results confirmed the ankle was sprained, according to CSN Bay Area.

Curry is listed as day-to-day, but it’s unlikely he plays until this weekend. The third-year guard missed today’s practice, and his agent Lance Young told USA Today that his client would sit out tomorrow night’s game against the Knicks. Golden State’s next game after that is Saturday night in Philadelphia.

Curry averaged 18.6 points and 5.8 assists for the Warriors last season. He had surgery at the end of the year to strengthen the ankle, but so far, it hasn’t been enough.

    Enlarge fontEnlarge font

A former Golden State Warriors employee has filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against guard Monta Ellis for allegedly sending her unwanted, sexually explicit text messages, The Associated Press reports.

The former employee claims Ellis sent her explicit messages “several times a day” beginning in November 2010, including photos of the player’s genitals, according to the AP. Other reported messages included, “I want to be with you,” and “Hey Sexy,” along with Ellis proposing sexual encounters.

The Warriors changed the employee’s job description after the incidents began, but eventually fired her when Ellis’ wife learned of the inappropriate text messages and complained to team executives.

The employee believes she was treated unfairly. The lawsuit cites wrongful termination and intentional infliction of emotional distress. The amount of damages the former employee is seeking is unspecified at this time.

Ellis was the Warriors’ leading scorer in 2010-2011, averaging 24.1 PPG. He is currently in the fifth year of a $66 million, six-year contract with the Warriors.

Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry re-injured his surgically repaired right ankle in Tuesday’s loss against the Sacramento Kings, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Curry re-injured the ankle while defending Jimmer Fredette’s crossover at the top of the key. Curry then crawled toward the sideline, visibly in pain. Team doctors have diagnosed the injury as a sprain and Curry will be re-examined today.

Last season, Curry severely sprained his right ankle three times. This offseason, after surgically repairing the ankle with a noted specialist, the Warriors believed any instability in the ankle had been repaired.

“We got to the bottom of it, got it fixed, and it shouldn’t be any problem going forward,” general manager Larry Riley told reporters this offseason, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Before re-injuring his ankle, Curry played 15 minutes and tallied seven points, five assists and three steals.

Amundson has played for three teams in his five seasons in the league, averaging just over four points a game.

Update 6:48 p.m.: Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports that DeAndre Jordan has actually signed a 4-year, $43 million offer sheet with Golden State.

Original post: Reports emerged on Sunday that the Golden State Warriors would be pursuing center DeAndre Jordan, and, according to Matt Steinmetz of CSNBayArea.com, were planning to sign the Los Angeles Clippers’ restricted free agent to an offer sheet worth $40 million over four years.  Sunday afternoon, the Warriors made the necessary moves to clear salary cap space to allow that offer, according to Ken Berg of CBS Sports.

Bell, released under the amnesty clause allowed by the new CBA, was told by the team to remain in Michigan, where he was arrested Thursday when he showed up intoxicated for a hearing on a previous drunk driving charge.

Jordan is viewed as a shot-blocker and rebounder; in 2010-11 with the Clippers, he averaged 5.7 rebounds and 1.8 blocked shots per game in, on average, 25.6 minutes played.
