Gilbert Arenas Details Infamous Gun Incident

Memphis Grizzlies guard Gilbert Arenas outlined in an interview with USA Today the now infamous gun incident that eventually led to his massive suspension and trade from the Washington Wizards.

The dispute began around unpaid debts stemming from a card game, according to Arenas. When the All-Star guard stepped in to try and calm the tensions between his teammates, he got thrown directly into the argument.

“So I jumped in, ‘Why you talking to your teammates like this? We family,” Arenas said.

“That’s when (Crittenton) started coming at me, ‘(Expletive, racial slur), just because you got all money, this and this and this.’ That’s when we started going back and forth. I didn’t owe him anything. It was over a $1,100 pot he just lost.”

“Someone said they were going to shoot me. So since I’m one of those guys who says, ‘I want to see this happen. I want to see you actually shoot me,’ that’s where that came from,” says Arenas, declining to mention that someone by name. “I brought the four guns in and said (in a note), ‘Pick 1, so the day you want to shoot me let me know, I’ll be ready to get shot.’ That’s how.”

As a result of the incident Arenas was suspended the final 50 games of the season by commissioner David Stern. He was also forced to spend 30 days in a halfway house after legal charges were levied by the District of Columbia for violating local gun laws.

Arenas was traded to the Orlando Magic early the next season. He recently signed on with the Memphis Grizzlies after not starting the NBA season with any team. In 10 games with Memphis he has averaged 5.4 points and 1.1 assists per game.

Former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas has officially signed a one-year, league minimum deal with the Memphis Grizzlies, according to David Aldrirdge.

Arenas, 30, has been a free agent since the Orlando Magic waived him via the amnesty clause prior to this season. He was ineffective in 70 games last year split between Orlando and Washington, averaging career lows of 10.8 points and 2.7 assists per contest.

Prior to suffering multiple knee injuries, Arenas was one of the brightest young players in the league. In 2002-03 he was named the NBA’s Most Improved Player, and from 2005-07 he was selected to the Eastern Conference All-Star team.

  • Report: Gilbert Arenas Close To Signing With Memphis Grizzlies

Gilbert Arenas is getting closer to a comeback to the NBA — the free-agent guard worked out this morning for the Memphis Grizzlies, who are preparing to sign him for the rest of this season, reports Ronald Tillery of the Memphis Commercial Appeal.

Sources tell Tillery that Arenas “appeared slender and shot the ball well” this morning, and pending a physical, he’ll be signing on the dotted line to make the prorated veteran’s minimum for the rest of this season, about $300,000. If the deal is completed soon, he could join the Grizzlies in Portland later this week. The team is headed West now for a four-game road swing.

Arenas has been out of the league since December, when the Orlando Magic waived him under the amnesty clause. He was shipped to Orlando from the Washington Wizards in the December 2010 Rashard Lewis trade.

Arenas averaged career lows of 10.8 points and 2.7 assists per game last season. For his career, he has averaged 21.2 points and 5.4 assists per contest.

The Grizzlies have won 13 of their last 18 games and are now 25-18, fifth in the Western Conference.

  • Report: Grizzlies Interested In Signing Gilbert Arenas

All-Star guard Gilbert Arenas remains a free agent at age 30 — and he’s drawn the interest of the Memphis Grizzlies, according to Roland Tillery of the Memphis Commercial Appeal.

The Grizzlies have won 12 of their last 16 games and now sit fourth in the Western Conference at 24-17, but they’re still looking to address two main areas post-trade deadline — a backup point guard, and more outside shooting. They’re optimistic that Arenas would meet both needs.

Arenas hasn’t played a minute in the NBA this season — he’s been unemployed since December, when the Orlando Magic became one of the first teams in the league to use their one-time amnesty clause and waive him. The Magic still owe Arenas $62 million, but the veteran guard is free to sign with another team for the veteran’s minimum of $1.4 million. The Grizzlies have exactly one roster spot open.

Arenas was part of a blockbuster trade in December 2010 that sent Rashard Lewis to the Washington Wizards and Arenas to Orlando. He was disappointing in 70 games last season split between Orlando and Washington, averaging career lows of 10.8 points and 2.7 assists per game. For his career, he has averaged 21.2 points and 5.4 assists per contest.

  • Report: Kobe Bryant Would Be On Board With Gilbert Arenas Signing

Kobe Bryant is for the signing of free-agent guard Gilbert Arenas, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.

“It certainly wouldn’t hurt,” Bryant told reporters when asked about whether the Lakers needed Arenas. Bryant also reportedly told reporters that Arenas would bring, “Hibatchi,” to Los Angeles, a reference to a nickname Arenas gave himself after scoring 60 points on the Lakers in 2006.

The Lakers reportedly attended a private workout with Arenas this week and were impressed by his mobility.

Arenas, 30, has been a free agent since the Orlando Magic waived him via the amnesty clause prior to this season. He was ineffective in 70 games last year split between Orlando and Washington, averaging career lows of 10.8 points and 2.7 assists per contest.

According to a report tonight from Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, Los Angeles Lakers officials attended a private workout for free agent guard Gilbert Arenas in Southern California today.

Two sources told Wojnarowski that “Arenas moved well and made a positive impression, but there was no sense of how quickly — if at all — the Lakers would pursue signing him to a free-agent contract.”

Arenas, 30, has been a free agent since the Orlando Magic waived him via the amnesty clause prior to this season. He was ineffective in 70 games last year split between Orlando and Washington, averaging career lows of 10.8 points and 2.7 assists per contest.

Nevertheless, the Lakers may take a long look at Arenas, who has averaged 21.2 points per game for his career. The Lakers are in dire need of backcourt depth and could use an extra weapon offensively — they currently rank 22nd in the NBA with 92.7 points per game.

  • Report: Lakers Will ‘Take A Look’ At Free Agent Gilbert Arenas

The Los Angeles Lakers are in desperate need of a little extra guard depth if they want to contend for a championship in 2012, and the answer might be on the horizon — Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak is considering attending a workout for Gilbert Arenas, according to a report from Ken Berger of CBS.

“The Lakers are going to take a look at him,” a source told Berger.

Arenas has been a free agent since the Orlando Magic waived him via the amnesty clause prior to this season. He averaged 8.0 points per game in 49 contests for the Magic last season.

Arenas has been limited for the last three seasons due to knee injuries, in addition to a lengthy suspension in 2010 for bringing firearms into the Washington Wizards’ locker room. But the Lakers need another body, and they haven’t gotten anywhere in discussions to land Ramon Sessions from Cleveland or Jonny Flynn from Houston. Arenas may be the answer.

  • Report: Lakers Have Inquired About Gilbert Arenas

Los Angeles Lakers head coach Mike Brown acknowledged the team had inquired about free-agent guard Gilbert Arenas, but indicated that the talks weren’t serious, according to the Orange County Register.

“It’s just conversation,” Brown said Tuesday. “We’ve had conversations about a lot of players. There are a ton of players that we’ve had conversations with.”

Arenas, 30, last played with the Orlando Magic before he was waived under the new collective bargaining agreement’s amnesty clause. The clause allowed teams to cut high-expense players without having to take a salary cap hit. To this point, there has not been much interest in the three-time All-Star.

Through the 2006-07 season, Arenas was considered one of the top players in the game before several consecutive knee surgeries, and a major suspension, forced him to miss 189 games over a three-year period.

In his first full season since he averaged 28.4 points per game for the Washington Wizards in 2006-07, Arenas tallied 10.8 points and 3.9 assists per contest in 70 games between the Wizards and Magic.

The Los Angeles Lakers are considering signing guard Gilbert Arenas, according to ESPN’s Chris Broussard.

Steve Blake will miss at least another few weeks with a rib injury, and two rookies are backing up veteran Derek Fisher at guard.

Arenas, 30, was waived by the Orlando Magic in December. The once-explosive scorer averaged just eight points a game last year with the Magic.
